Clicking on "More Info" or trying to place them in the cart yields a Server Error (malformed syntax). If someone really want to check on availability I suggest they call.

Does this mean that this cpu is not multiplier locked? Also, for those of you using the chip on a FIC 503+, which version of the bios do you need to run the chip properly? Thanks!

Just wondering if anyone knows where I can find a list of motherboards tested with these chips...I've got a couple old SS7 systems lying around, one with the FIC VA-503+ and one with a Tyan 1598S...I'd like to know whether they're going to work or not before buying...

thx

Im using the k6-2 500 right now in an ancient tx97-e motherboard. These chips are not multiplier locked, and they reinterpret the 2x multiplier at 6x. its a good solid chip and the overclocking on them is supposed to be pretty good. I can be more sure of that when I get this new MB and push this chip to 600 mhz.

Addon: Since this chip was meant for the portable market and not for home pcs, I dont think AMD has done a compatibility check. However, my guess is that sites like amdzone.comshould have something on this issue. For more info, you can check the newsgroup for your mb manufacturer at dejanews.com.

FIC's Taiwan site is the one for answers.
FIC Taiwan

JE4330 or JE4331 will work for the 503+ (also needed if you run WinME with any K6)
Get it from a link at the above site.

If you need more advice, the following newsgroup will help.
alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.fic

I just bought one of these to replace a K6-III at 448 (112x4), in a FIC 503A.
448MHz was the most I could get out of the K6-III.
To get the same performance of the K6-III at 448, I had to run the K6-2+ at 550Mhz.
But, I was easily able to hit 600, which made the K6-2+ faster.
Also ran it at 112x5.5, or 616MHz, but had occasional errors, so backed it down to 600MHz.
At these speeds, with this CPU, temp is a non-issue. CPU runs about 2 to 7 degrees more than case temp, even in hot Florida room.

Just checked and the old thread on the K6-3+, which had all kinds of
good info and links, is no more. Wish they could could keep old threads
longer. Anyway, like bossdog said, the AMD zone has lot of info and here's the link to the mobo compatibility thread:

linkydoo to the mobo compatibility thread

I got the A216-1026 heatsink from Tigerdirect and it's a pretty damn
nice one - it's for a socket 370 but bigger than the one for socket 7, and same price - you want to rebend the retainer clip for contact in the center of the new cpu, but no bigee.

I've been running a K6-3+/450 at 600mhz@2v on a 503+-1.2A for over five months and it's pretty damn zippy!

Ordered one yesterday. Thanks for the post. I think I found that old link that samiam was referring to. Searched on "amd" in the main search page and used the older than 45 days option. It was the largest thread I found, had 247 posts.
old link

Figured I'd toss this in.

I just upgraded the eSlate 450k that I got from that OD closeout deal awhile back, and though voltage is set to 2.1v, it worked like a charm. The bios recognized the chip as a K6-2+ 450, and the difference in speed is just amazing. (I upgraded the ram to 256, the HDD to 12GB - no great difference. Upgrade the processor, and the rest just shines...)

On the downside, it can only reliably overclock to about 500, no doubt due to the laptop sized HS/Fan combo installed on the processor.

The best part? The laptop is no longer blazingly hot after running for a half hour or so.

Thank you AMD...

A word of warning about my experience with tiger direct. I called their "customer service rep" (and after 37 minutes on holdd) and asked for a tracking number (since my cpu was sent UPS ground) he said "we don't use tracking numbers". Ok so I asked him if they have a shipper number "no we don't". Hmmmm.....I asked him how I was supposed to track my package if it became lost. He said call ups and do a zip code to zip code trace and gave me the warehouse zip. He said they could give me any details I wanted to know about the shipment.

So I call UPS and the first rep informs me a zip to zip trace is only for determining how much time a shipment should take. Call a 2nd UPS rep just in case....same story. I have concerns about dealing with this company. I guess the 2.8 ratings from (from 79 votes) should have been my first clue

If you guys are having trouble with TigerDirect, there is a store called Software and Stuff. Here's the link for the 450K6-2+ Link. Their price is 40.00 plus 7.00 shipping by UPS ground and no tax if you're outside CA. Here is a link of theirs that shows compatible boards with the proper bios needed to run the cpu. Boards/bios.

The resellerrating is 5.1

I got the CPU from Softwareandstuff. They shipped promptly, but charged me $8 for shipping. It actually went USPS first class ($2+ only) and took over a week to get here. The packaging was not very good, just the static bag and bubble wrap. Not even a "sponge" (sorry don't know a proper name for this thingy) to protect the pins. I'm glad it came in fine, and I'd buy from this place before I'd buy from Tiger.
I also wanted to mention that it runs fine in my FIC VA-503+ 1.0 w/ the lastest (4330) BIOS @ 500 w/ cheap HSF and cool. I run PassMark and Sandra for 24 hours and no errors. I'll not push it higher (may be w/ soft set just to check)

Can you stick these k6 2+ cpus in a an older pentium laptop say a 233 mhz and make it work. Any one tried it or are all latptop motherboards proprietary?

It depends on the motherboard in question. I have a k6-2+ 500 and I have it running at 450 in my old mobo. Do you know the type of motherboard you have? For instance, I have it running at 6*75fsb= 450mhz. An underclock, I know, but Im getting a p5a and should get this chip up to 600mhz. its supposed to be very overclockable.

oh sorry didnt see laptop. mmm, Ive heard mixed stories on that. your laptop might not have the correct voltage settings..it might also draw too much current for your laptop to handle.

Received mine yesterday. Order/shipping time was good. I ordered it Tuesday, they shipped Tuesday and I received via UPS on Thursday (FL>AL). CPU came nicely packaged in hard plastic shell (like retail CPUs) with anti-static (pink) foam covering the pins. I will try it out this weekend.

I've ordered from TigerDirect a number of times over the past two years and have not had any problems with them. I bought my first barebones system from them two years ago and I'm still using it as my multi-boot OS test system.

Great post on the softwareandstuff.com site, they actually have the K6-2/450+ on sale for $30 right now, with only $7 shipping, great upgrade to my 350MHz chip in my SS7 machine that I use for CD Burning, maybe I can even watch DVDs on it now .
