Hello
I have been looking on newegg.com and just want to know about amd chipsets. I plan on getting an amd 955be but I have never overclocked before but it will be my 6th build over the years. Two questions.

1. does overclocking help to the point that I would notice and how far with the stock cooler.
2. the most important ? what chipset sholud I get, I don't mind paying more for a motherboard but is there any real performance gains in the chips sets of the 800s series over the 700s series.

Thank you

What features do you want? thats what it comes down to. Do you need the ability to go Crossfire in thye future, and if so are you going to be using cards that are going to need 2 full 16x lanes or is 8x lanes ok. Do you need SATA 3 and USB 3. Do you need onboard GPU. Do you need RAID support? Are you the type of person that will keep the mobo and try for a CPU/GPU upgrade in the future to keep you till the next full upgrade or do you just buy whole new systems each time? If you want a better upgrade path then the newer 8 series chipsets will be a better bet as they are more likely to support new AMD CPU's. All this info will help us suggest a mobo that suits your needs.

And you are not going to be able to push it super far on the stock cooler, depening on what you are doing with your PC though overclocking can make a noticable differnce. If really trying for the max OC get a aftermarket cooler.

Hi Rifterut

Sorry for not providing those features required. My Budget is within or around $75 so kindly recommend a robust motherboard which comes with most of the features you mentioned

Thanks

there really isnt much difference between the 700 and 800 series.

i think the only reason you'd buy an 800 series really is if you wanted SATA 3. which only some 800 series boards have with SB850 southbridge (mostly the 890gx, i think most 880G and 870 boards have the sb710).

basically , outside of the south bridge, the 770 and 870 , 785g and 880g and 790gx and 890gx are functionally the same, with maybe slightly different GPU clocks for the ones with an IGP built in.

I'm inclined to believe that 800 series will have better forward-compatibility with future CPU's. Unless it's a lot more and/or have no plans on upgrading to a better cpu someday, I'd highly suggest the 800 series.

I agree, and mentioned the compatability with new CPU's in my first post. Good luck finding one for the OP's budget of $75 though.

Its not the OP with a budget of $75. The thread has been hijacked by SP (second poster).

Go for the 800 series as it's new tech will come in handy.

I would carefully reconsider the use of AMD chipsets if you are planning to use AHCI, e.g. because you want to use an SSD now/in the future.
AMD's AHCI drivers cost you 20-45% in drive performance and the generic MSFT AHCI drivers can cause stuttering issues.
