AMD NIC problem

I just got my cheapo AMD Network Card in the mail today, hook it up, and it's not auto detected. It's ok, I figure.. it's old.. so I tell the PC to search for new hardware, it finds the NIC, and installs it. Then I get an error. It's "Error 10: The device cannot start." or something very similar to that. I push my FSB back down from 150 to 133 and try again, same message. Any ideas as to what's up, or is it just...too old?

try uninstall the nic card and reinstalling it again.

checked for irq conflicts? does it find it as a nic or something else (like vid card)?

Make sure your drivers are properly installed. To do so, uninstall the device via device manager. Then, with a copy of the most current drivers on hand, install the device once again. I had a similar problem when I accidentally updated my drivers with Win98 drivers instead of 2000 drivers.

Yea, make sure you are using the correct driver. Windows doesn't always install the correct driver. Even if it does, they don't always work properly, especially on older cards.

In your BIOS, under PCI/PNP, try turning off PNP BIOS, and setting "Resources Controlled By" to AUTO. I don't know why it helps, but it did with the last 4 cards (2 ancient NIC, 2 ancient sound).

Edit: That should be "Resources Controlled By" to MANUAL.

Thanks for all the help. Well, I screwed and screwed with the thing to no avail, and NICs aren't exactly wallet breaking, so I went to Best Buy, got a Netgear FA311, popped it in, and all is good. (and I got a $5 rebate! ) My guess is that the AMD NIC didn't enjoy my FSB or something. Thanks though! If not for all the help I got here, I'd be clueless.
