I just got a new Acer Aspire 1300, powered by a AMD Athon 1400+ processor. Although I am pleased with my purchase, I am a little worried about some heating concerns. A friend of mine told me that I should never get a AMD notebook because of AMD overheating problems. The truth is that when doing small tasks, like word processing, it says very cold, but I guess it is because it stays a at low clock rate. But when I run a high demanding task, like a 3D game, it warms up very quicky, and stay a lot hot, even in a short 10 minutes session. The fans are working fine (the air is coming out very hot) but even the case stays hot.
So I am worried about it, with the notebook have a temperature alarm or not, that will prevent any damage caused by the heat.
I would like to ask the people here if it is normal to a modern laptop to warm up this way, and if there is no risk to the processor or the battery. I can return it until friday if I want to. This notebook is intend to be mainly a word processor for my wife, not my primary gaming source (but it will be nice if I can run some games on it).
Sorry if my question is a strange one. Although I am familiar with notebooks at office I usually only run low demanding task on it (no office gaming ...).
A final note: AMD notebooks are very common in Europe nowadays, but I am not sure if they are in USA.
Any help will be appreciated.

I run an AMD laptop (Athlon 4 1ghz) and my laptop is on 24/7 with very limited undocked time. It does run a lil warm, but I never do laptop gaming, mostly MP3's, internet, and some word processing. My laptop's been running 24/7 for about 15 months now...the fans work on the processor and come on and off intermittently. The only time it gets REALLY warm is when I burn a cd or watch a DVD on it. That's when it likes to get toasty, especially on your lap, lol. But other than that I really like the notebook. BTW, it's an HP XH485.

I have a Fujitsu Siemens laptop powered by a P4(Not the M version) @ 2.0 ghz. And I can say that my laptop tends to get pretty hot too, mainly on the casing around the processor. So I know it is not only laptops with AMD processors that gets warm.

I dont think the heat should be a problem. almost all laptops run hot with these speeds. so nothing to really worry about, but if you really want some security, just take the money you saved buying AMD and purchase an extended warrenty that protects not only the CPU and laptop, but also the LCD, as thats the most fragile and most costly to repair or replace. If im not mistaken these new loptops come with a socket in which you could repace the CPU, similar to a regular desktop. Newegg.com sells them if u want to check it out. No worries mate. game away and enjoy your new AMD laptop.

Thanks people.
I was worried because I cannot get an extended warrenty as right now I am living in Germany for 3 months (where I got it) and later I will move back to Brazil, so I am stuck with the usual 1-year warrenty.

So basically all newer and above GHz notebooks run very hot... The case is that I already had a CPU in my desktop PC that died from overheating (it was running 24/7 and the fan failed. I did not notice until it was too late...) so I was afraid of that happinning again.

Again, thanks to all.
