AMD OEM 1ghz and heatsink

I just got my heatsink and processor today, and got no thermal paste. I assume you need some, but my processor has 4 little rubber pads on the top it looks like. Do I get some grease and apply it to the top of the processor just where the ceramic is, or do I apply it all accrosed the top even where the amd logo is? Please let me know.

Get some paste. Radio Shack sells decent paste...think they call it thermal grease. Apply thin layer only to top of processor.

Beware RS grease drying on socket-a(high heat, high clip pressure) situations.

RS Grease is not great but it is better than no grease, unless, you put on too much. Make sure you put on a THIN layer. Be careful mounting the fan or you could crack the chip core and NEVER turn the system on without the heatsink firmly mounted to the chip. Make sure you don't have the little rubber pads on both the heatsink and the chip. They should be on only one or the other. It is also a good idea to put on the thermal grease, put the heatsink on top of the chip without clipping it, then take the heatsink off and look at the grease to be sure you are getting good contact with the chip. You can then re-attach it with the clip permanently.

Most AMD approved hsf have a so called thermal pad, PCTC pre-applied. Check out yours. PCTC will work fine, don't add any other compound. If you decide to use something other than the pad, make sure that you remove it completely. Radio Smack grease is not up to 1 gz BIRDS, either use the pad or invest in some Arctic Silver.

BTW what hsf did you get, you'll need decent cooling for that BIRD, over 50 watts, if I recall.

Now you've done it daddyg. Someone is going to tell you "RS grease is the best on the market", and they have a 286-12 running at 1350 with the stuff on it. (this is to prevent that message, we'll see if it works)

People already do.. : RadioShack grease doesn't dry out.. It never did on my Celeron 366 No Overclock.
