AMD today announced the opening of a new design centre in Hyderabad, featuring world-class lab facilities dedicated to furthering both software and hardware innovations at the heart of AMD's popular Accelerated Processing Units (APUs.) In a ceremony held today, the new design centre was inaugurated by Rory Read, president and chief executive officer at AMD.

"AMD is committed to providing our customers with innovative, tailored technology solutions that empower people and deliver exceptional experiences," said Read. "Our Hyderabad Design Centre will play an important part in that mission as the team works in concert with our other design centers around the world to deliver AMD's next round of innovative products."

Located at Raheja Mindspace, HITEC City, Madhapur, in the heart of Hyderabad's technology hub, the new facility features 175,000 square feet of world-class engineering labs, equipment and office space for the hundreds of engineers who work there to deliver world-class, differentiated System-On-Chips (SOCs) for AMD and its global customers. AMD also has a design centre in Bangalore, as well as sales offices in New Delhi and Mumbai.

"India is a crucial market for AMD, and our design centers in both Hyderabad and Bangalore are key design and development hubs for our business," said Madhusudan Atre, corporate vice president, Design Engineering at AMD. "Like our talented engineering teams around the world, the engineers working in AMD's new Hyderabad Design Center are every bit as focused and committed to the sustained delivery of hardware and software innovations that can help drive the company's business forward."

Will their next press release be the closing of their US design center?

Threadcrapping already? Sure that didn't take long :hmm:

Oh wait, it's about AMD, it's allowed in here.

ONT: Good news for them, and let's see what this new facility can contribute to their SoC designs.

Thread crapping about AMD is NOT allowed in here. -Admin DrPizza

Very good news indeed. This is just the sort thing a lot of people have been wondering about, with RR: would he try to set them up more for liquidation, or try to squeeze more R&D out of...well, thin air, at the moment, but still, good news (of course, that could be why it's in India: cheaper than other places, and they might have the right pockets lined, already).

Didn't the Hyderabad team design Brazos?

At a team of only 80 and help from austin they collected the ip from cpu and gpu and made it ready for production. A huge success imho, and this investment and expansion reflects that.

This reflects the problem for mubadala and abu dhabi. Where do you want to put your design center?
In abu dhabi or hyderabad? Lol
From a business perspective this is the difference between the worst and the best.
Good luck for Hyderabad. Whatever happens to amd the jobs and development will stay. I am certain this is a good decision for the future. Low cost, tons of talent and energy.

Amen. North American teams are smart, but from my experience lack the "go get em" attitude. Often the international teams want to prove their worth, and will go above and beyond to get the job done.

Link?

I find it difficult to believe a team of 80 can design a modern CPU.

Bobcat and Jaguar were both primarily designed in Austin, with portions of each designed in Fort Collins. The India teams did mainly SOC integration (Ontario/Zacate, etc).

Is this just an announcement of new physical facilities? I thought AMD had a team in Hyderabad ever since the ATI acquisition.

edit: do these LinkedIn profiles say what they did (e.g. verif, perf)?

Well there's a lot of guys in India who are claiming Jaguar experience on LinkedIn.

The guys who worked on implementing MCM wiring and packaging at Intel got to claim 90nm Pentium4 experience as well, but it doesn't mean the same thing by a long shot...the label one uses to describe one's work experience doesn't always convey proper interpretation to a laymen.

Working "with" something does not mean working "on" something.

A team of 80 people working "with" pre-existing bobcat cores and "with" pre-existing GPU cores, bolting them together and debugging the post-bolt creation, is not the same as working "on" the bobcat cores or "on" the GPU cores.

All jobs are necessary, but conflating the job scopes leads to misunderstanding and misattribution of what is actually being done by any given team or employee.
