I was randomly browsing through Monarch's combo section due to boredom, and it stuck out like a sore thumb. Opteron 146's for $215, which is about normal on the net, and an OEM 144 for $130.75. So, I checked up on it, and it's not listed for individual sale in their parts section either. So, you can pick one up for about $180 online, or get it here for $130.75 + a motherboard as a Monarch combo. Hot as hell if you ask me.

WARNING: purchased an OEM Abit AX8 from Monarch. Sale rep said it was new. Actually MB has about a dozen resoldered joints on the back of the board. Called Monarch and one lady in customer service said OEM COULD be refurbished.

I would never purchase OEM parts again from this outfit.

The s940 ones are $173, but the s939 ones are listed as $213 in the combo page.
Also, OEM parts are supposed to be new unless otherwise stated. It just means they don't come with a retail box.

I was considering a combo from Monarch about a month ago. I emailed them and asked if they would send me unopened boxes and let me assemble everything myself. They said "No".

So, I changed my mind since I had no way of knowing if they were sending me new components (CPU) or returned ones.

They said if I wanted unopened boxes, I couldn't order the combo. I had to order them individually and I would not qualify for the combo price. It makes me wonder if they spend more time on assembling the parts, why would they charge less?!

Ya, sounds like a good way to sell off their returns .

I have no reason to believe that they sell returns this way. But, I just wanted to let everybody know what happened.

I bought a 148 combo on the 26th of last month.
After reading various forums I was a little hesitant but went ahead and ordered anyway.
Wish I had ordered somewhere else.

My motherboard was a retail box, but you could tell it had been installed before.(scratches on the mounting holes). And it had a cracked ide connector.and the southbrige heatsink was loose . But it worked great.
Then the thermaltake fan on the cpu started going out before the week was up. Called and asked if they could just send me a replacement fan(little thing). They said No, that I would have to return the entire heatsink, or the entire combo to get fixed.
I have decided to return the entire combo for a refund.
I think I would rather pay a few dollars more and get the setup from somewhere else and put the setup together myself.

You'd think a 9/10+ RR feedback store would have gotten in legal trouble for such activity.

Thanks for the heads up on this place and their prices
I just saved some more money, ( along with the lcd monitor I bought yesterday, elsewhere )

At this rate I'll go broke saving money.

But for an Opteron 144 with an Asrock mb, a cheap cd-rom player, ( mines getting flakely ), and a new mike-headphone, for $260.00 shipped, I'll take it

I just hope they send me a good overclocker.

Not that I'd ever do anything like that.

Wait, are you saying you get the processor + mobo for $130 if you buy the OEM? Because from what I'm seeing its just the processor, and honestly I'd rather just get a A64 3700+ which is better than this and isnt OEM (unless it does come with mobo, then this is incredible and maybe I'll decide to get a system now instead of waiting for Vista +DX10)

An OC'd 144 Opteron should be nearly as good as an OC'd SD 3700+ and it's about $100 cheaper to boot with this deal. Throw in a DFI nF4 Ultra-D and like Avalon said, you'll have a smokin hot deal....

How far do you think you can OC this 144 with the Zalman cooling kit? I'm thinking of getting a 146 which I could probably get to FX-55 or maybe even 57 speeds.......

Hahaha I ordered trhis a week ago Feb 3rd. that combo exactly. was $278 shipped 2day which will turn out to be 9 days! I complained and they mailed me a free coupon for HL2 and gave me a 90day warranty free. They actually test the combos mine was bad so they had to wait to get in more DFI Ultra -D's lady said they sell like hotcakes!

I figured on an Ultra-D there was little chance not to obtain an OC that wasn't going to make me happy!

Not only Monarch but any OEM system builder (Dell, etc..) If you don't receive the components in sealed boxes, how can you possibly know you are purchasing brand new parts. It will more than likely be just fine, but do a good thorough inspection of your goods and take appropriate action if deemed necessary.....

My guess is 2500 to 2800 MHz with a 144, 2700 to 3000 MHz with a 146. The 144 has a 9 multiplier so a board like the DFI fits the bill perfectly.

The stock cooler is probably good until 2700-2800 MHz max in 72F ambient air but will be noisy. The Zalman should do a bit better....

I ordered an Abit KN8 Ultra ($99.99) with an OEM Opteron 144 ($130.75) on Jan. 27th and received the order on Jan. 31. I did not purchase a heat sink... actually I sent them an email and asked them to just test the combo with one of the heat sinks they had in their lab, or send the parts in their boxes untested. Well, they went ahead and shipped me the combo with the heatsink installed... so, free heatsink for me! The mobo came in the box with all the specified cables, accessories, etc.

My experience with them was nothing but positive, and $130 is a great price for the Opty' 144s. By the way, the Opteron 144 I received is stepping "CAB2E"

Cheers!

I am curious why Monarch does this!

They sell you a CPU, a Motherboard and a cooler in sealed boxes for X Dollars.
They sell you the same exact components for less if you ask them to assemble them and test them! What is the incentive behind this? It would take them time to do this test. So, why do they charge less?

Do they ship you the motherboard with the CPU on it and the heat sink installed on it? That would not fit in the motherboard box. So, how do they ship it? Is it even safe to ship a motherboard with a 450g heatsink installed on it?
