Thanks for the post I just ordered the Asrock a Opteron 144 and the Thermaltake 1770. Sounds like a good upgrade from the XP1800 that I'm running now.

Actually it may be beneficial for both them and the consumer to pretest the boards. My suspician is that some of these products may be returns or opened boxes. NO matter. As long as they haven't been used and they work whats the difference if the box was opened. I bought the 144 and the asrock after doing a little research. The asrock may be a little quirky but I've had plenty of quirky boards. I ordered the thermaltake 1770 too but I'm not big on noisy fans and I heard this one is a wall shaker on high.

Well, they went ahead and shipped me the combo with the heatsink installed... so, free heatsink for me! The mobo came in the box with all the specified cables, accessories, etc.

My experience with them was nothing but positive, and $130 is a great price for the Opty' 144s. By the way, the Opteron 144 I received is stepping "CAB2E"

Cheers!

There is only one board there you should be ordering with a 144 IMO. DFI NF4 Ultra. It's the only board I see there that will let you stretch that 9x multiplier

QFT. I know some sites (what was it, surpluscomputers) that sell OEM or sleeve/jewel case older versions for around that price. This is the newest version and retail box to boot!

$130 for an Opty... thought I was missing the boat earlier, now may have to jump in... I don't need this though... gah!!!

They been giving away Lance Armstrong and Nero (only with full systems tho) their free stuff sux.

BTW if you want this hop Now! It might be too late. They do cancel orders and the office lad said they were pulling that from the sight and that all of the OEM's were "PROMISED" that was her word.

You're evil, Zebo, pure evil. I've got the Monarch page in another browser window... must... not...

Just trying to decide which board... nooooo... deciding on a board will put me that much closer to buying something I don't need...

I'm thinking it can go in my gaming rig, P4 2.53@3.33GHz 2GB dual channel 6800GT AGP... noooooo it won't really boost gaming unless I get a 7800GT....

LOL - it's a definity buy for some... but - Don't you already have the $280 Frys X2 clocked sky high on the ECS or something?

Clocked at 2.5GHz and still on the ECS board. That's in my main rig (ignore note in pic ). This deal is tempting for my gaming rig.

I don't need this and it certainly won't be much of an upgrade unless I spring for a 7800GT along with it, but gosh darn I want it. Heck, my x2 @2.5GHz with 2GB dual channel doesn't feel much different to me than my socket 754 Newcastle @2.4GHz with 1GB single channel (underclocked to DDR356). That upgrade was worthy because I freed up my AGP 6800GT for my gaming rig, which used to have an FX5900XT. THAT was a worthy and noticeable upgrade.

Sheesh, few minutes ago I just ordered a refurb X800GTO 256MB for $100 shipped, just in case I get new stuff. GAH! Stop the insanity! (that little voice in my head says "you really want it...")

Just chill you won't notice the 144 or the 7800 or maybe even both together.

If I were building a new gaming rig it would'nt have a 1xx anything but a dual core since I like not to have to worry about if I'm running something else when I launch a game. Seriously to say you don't notice the dually you must not game shrink some DVD's at same time. with alerts I ALT-tab next DVD next CD ALT-tab continue fagging or exploring a medievil world someplace. I'd order just what you have a 3800+ and clock to a safe 2.6 or whatever default volts gives.

Then I get a 1900 AIW for $450 and clock it to XTX speeds.

BTW nice cases and cabling - looks like you planned well for quietness

My and my friend both ordered one set last week with the DFI mobo. The stepping on our 144 are CAB2E 0546 UPMW.

Thanks man, you just saved me $240 or so, though I would like that Nero for $8...

And no, I don't multitask much. Task swap, yes, I leave stuff "running" but really they're idle. No encoding/ripping/SETI/Folding/virus scanning/etc.

Then again, just looked on eBay and the x2 3800+ is fetching $265 and up on current bidding, some as high as $285, and that's not final price yet. Also, these are going for $285+ on For Sale/Trade. Perhaps...

BTW the board I'm considering would be the Abit KN8 Ultra. I like the layout and my non-ultra version did 300MHz HTT no problem. I'd be happy with 2.7GHz. Also, I'd probably get more use out of the extra cache than the extra core with my current usage patterns.

BTW, looking at the pic of your son's build... is that a hacked up heatpipe cooler for the motherboard chipset? How'd you attach that thing? One thing I liked about the Abit layout is the location of the chipset. On my wife's system I put a Zalman NB47J cooler on it and it fit nicely even with a dual heatpipe cooler on the video and Zalman 7700AlCu on the CPU. One thing I didn't like about the LANPARTY was the location of the chipset.

Hmmm, the LANPARTY NF4 goes for $115 and the Ultra goes for $120, cheaper than Newegg.

Is it possible to increase the multiplier for the Opteron 144? I'm considering this but won't I need REALLY good memory to get what I want (at least 2.6) with a 9x multiplier? To get 2.6 I'll need an HTT of 288, does that mean I have to have memory clocked @ 288?

Only current CPU that lets you increase multiplier is the FX. At 288MHz HTT run your memory at 2/3 ratio (often says 133 or 266 in BIOS). That way your RAM will be running almost exactly at DDR400 (384 to be exact, but close enough).

Is it a good idea to run memory at a lower ratio than the CPU? I hear putting memory in a 2/3 ratio is easy, but doing so creates some performance problems.
