I hear that the AMD 64 is good, but for a desktop, and for a laptop, Pentium M is definitly the way to go, any truth to this???? Also when does the dual core for AMD come out? Thanks.

If you're concerned about battery life, get a Pentium M. If you're mainly concerned about price, you can get an Athlon XP-M for cheaper. And some XP-Ms are actually stripped Athlon 64s, so thats even better.

Of course, you could always go with the Mobile Athlon 64 now if you want desktop like power.

Turion 64 is better price/performance, though it has limited availability.

Should you be able to spend a bit on such computer, try Acer's Ferrari w/A64 processor. Sweetest laptop I've seen.

Pentium M is the as of now for laptop. Most of the reviews shows that it is a beast. Even Turion cant matched the Pentium M and actually third party review says that Intel might used this in their next generation processor.

As for desktop, no doubt AMD is King

If you dont care for battery life and portability factor, AMD is better value. Otherwise Centrino processors are better.

There are some desktop replacements that are more powerful and cheaper, nonetheless...

I personally hate my current 1.5GHz Pm - if you ask me it is sloooooow. Sure, tests show that theoretically it is the fastest chip per MHz, but in all reality I have not seen this. Even worse, it is quite possibly the poorest multitasking CPU ever. With 1GB of RAM I still can hardly do two things at once.

My next laptop (getting it soon) will definitely be an A64. I would get a P4 w/ hyperthreading but I would like something that weighs less than a bowling ball and lasts for more than 30 minutes on battery power. If I can wait, I will probably get a Turion just for the hell of it - I'm not paying anyways.

If Intel were to decide to go the Pm route with desktops they would solidify my dedication to AMD for good.

Centrinos are the best but likely the most expensive....When under heavy use they do get very hot...My battery life sucks now like most laptop batteries seem to do in a matter of years. I got apps that dont seem to allow the system to stay in standby so when I come back to the PC I have like "critical battery low"...I pretty much have to run with CAD turned off before standby (didn't seem to at the beginning) and even then I make sure I always have my cord with me....

The turions likely iniitally are to be as expensive so the Centrino is te better option in price and performance.....The mobile Bartons can be had for nice price but wont be the top of the performance chain....

I personally would go with Pentium-M. Pentium-M is identical to centrino. The only difference is that the Centrino package features integrated wireless WAN on the motherboard chipset.

Overall despite its sluggishness, it has the best battery life of any CPU available.

Pentium M - My 1.5 People call them sluggish for the most part because they step so often down to a lower clock speed. If you get a 3rd party utility to control the stepping they work great. I just bought another P-M 1.86 and it's amazing. I can play WOW and CSS and HL2 No problem with great framerate. When I'm in class I get over 3 hours of battery life. I love them

AMD for desktop tho

I'm not really sure. From what I've experienced, you should use Intel processors if you want to get impotent. These got extremely warm (hot to the touch).

Centrinos are excellent as are Pentium M...I have to say, Intel is firmly ahead in the mobile market - AMD owns the desktop sector right now (though not in marketshare )

there is a 25W amd turion part that should be really good. also, 25W for an A64 includes the memory controller which the centrino does not have on die. the mem controller isn't factored into the P-M's numbers, but will surely make its chipset work a lot harder, prob a few watts worth.

so the 25W part, should use less juice than the fast centrino's. if its still too much, you could underclock.

these chips are starting to trickle out now.

While the following is not quite what is asked, it does show the capabilities of the lowly Pentium M when used in a Desktop.

http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=133&type=expert&pid=16

At stock speeds, the Pentium M 755 did very well in our benchmarks, outrunning some of the lower-end Athlon 64s and Pentium 4s in the majority of the tests. The real power behind the Pentium M comes when overclocked though; and the Asus CT-479 enabled us to go 200 MHz faster than the the 855GME platforms had for a total speed of 2.6 GHz. At that level we saw the P-M out performing the Athlon 64 FX-55 processor in gaming and the Pentium 4 in some media tests.

Too many people are stuck in their old ways of thinking. I was too, until I did the research.

The hot setup now is taking a 533MHz laptop, and sticking in the 400MHz P-M.
For example, that will overclock a P-M 1.8GHz to 2.4GHz.
18x100 to 18x133.
