I'm no veteran here, but i already know what they will say.

First off, what are you using this PC for?
Then, if it's anything but video encoding, etc., get a 64-Bit

I call, and raise to within 5 more posts.

As said, if it's not for media encoding, get the A64.

Get a Celeron, dude. Preferably pre-built. Now diss me for this advice and come back like many months from now and blame yourself for not following my piece of advice.

Doesn't matter, get whatever fits your budget. They will both perform well for you. Find a solid mobo for both chips, pick memory and check your budget against each. If you want to be cool and hip, start by not using the words "cool and hip", and then get an Athlon 64.

Unholy Intel Batman! The 2.6GHz Celeron is getting beat up by Athlon XP 1700+! :Q

I didn't say it was faster. It's slower indeed, but it's also noticeably cheaper, especially if you get it with a Dell deal or something like that. All these ultra powerful and expensive CPUs will turn in trash next year, so speed isn't a primary factor of choice, IMO. And if it's built by Dell it will be trouble-free and quiet unlike the one you assemble yourself, I'm not even talking about issues you may encounter. It will also be cheaper, probably. So you will not follow this advice of mine but I'm speaking from experience so it's up to you to decide.

Whoa!
That's just brutal. I've always known the lower end AMDs were better, but not that much better :Q

Low end performance: AMD. AMD is both faster and cheaper at the low end.

High end performance: get whichever one you want. Performance isn't different enough to worry about, and price isn't too far off either. I would consider the parts you mentioned to be high end.

And welcome to Anandtech.

Although I'm a believer in "aim for middle of the road and you'll be ok", I hardly doubt next year they will be "trash". According to your logic, why pay a lot for next years trash when you can buy cheap trash now?

Personally, I'd rather get a good years run out of a chip and have it be trash than save money up front and never be happy.

If you live by this logic, I'd hate to see your car.

quite frankly I am disappointed by the lack of a flame war.

I mean, its not like MACS ARE THE BEST COMPUTERS!!

There that should get everyone fired up.

that said, what is better at the moment really depends on price. you want to spend it or not? yoru hapiness will depend on the parts you surround the cpu with. I am sure many people here will agree that finding the CPU is not the most important part of the computer building process.

I have a P4 3.2C (speed was mostly for gaming), but I'd recommend an AMD64 3000+ / 3200+ instead for lower cost and better performance.

Unless you want to do video encoding

You know in the long run you'll never know the difference. Just buy the pretty one and be done with it.

AMD 64 3000+ or P4 2.6/2.8c.

P4 if you want to overclock or encode vid, AMD if you don't want to overclock.

Also, check articles comparing the two and see which one is better for your applications.

Higher end ones are inflated in terms of price, go for the mid-ish range.

If the pricing were the same this would be an easy call but it is not, not even close. 3.2C for $289 or a 3400+ for $404. You can do a lot for a systems performance with the $115 price difference. like get a Raptor to run your OS/Apps.

Of course the 3400+ will run 64 bit software better (when it comes out) but then you have to ditch what you are currently using and swap

Purchase the AMD 2500+ & OC it.

And get the AMD64 when there are games/apps available for it.
