I about to graduate and for my grad. gift i will be getting a laptop. I am left with a hot topic, either to go with AMD or a Pentium? Any help on this would be great, pros and cons will be greatly appriciated and links would be helpful.

You should have chosen a different thread title... this sounds too much like an Intel vs AMD battle.

But to answer your question. Intel Pentium laptops are much more used, but it really depends on what your doing. I think I have only seen 1GHz AMD laptops (correct me if I am wrong) while Intel now has DDR notebooks while AMD notebooks are still powered by SDR (strange as DDR was really first used by AMD and Intel is putting DDR in their laptops first).

So for the meantime if your looking for the best performing laptop then Intel powered with DDR memory is your way to go...

Compaq has some AMD CPU's that go to 1.4 Ghz. yeah, it's Compaq...... it's also stuck with SDRAM.

I like the Dell 8200s with the P4s. Mighty fast, great battery life, and did I mention it's fast?

That would be my recommendation.

Well, since this is a laptop situation instead, i would go for a pentium. The only reason is because they obviously run cooler than amd processors. And keeping cool is a really big issue with laptops, so go with intel in this case. Otherwise, AMD rules!!!

If you're gonna be using this as a desktop replacement, I'd suggest you keep gaming in mind. Currently, the most powerful vid card for the mobile market is the Geforce 4 Go 440. The only people to offer that card is Dell and Toshiba, both only include them with P4 laptops. Toshiba makes a nice 1.7 GHz P4 with that and Dell offers the 8200 with that. It's your choice. Also, there's Sony's new VAIO line with the 16.1" screens with the mobile Radeon 7500 and a P4. Those are also quite nice.

I would recommend you avoid the new P4 notebooks; I did a home setup for a friend at work who just purchases one of the new 16.1" VAIO P4s. Boy, it sure is a POS. I was amazed at how many times the computer failed to shutdown properly. It also ran EXTREMELY slow at times. Just loading windows took a good 4-5 mintues minimum. Not only that, the new P4 notebooks get barely any battery life. The laptop went from full to dead in less than 2 hours. Also to note, the laptop was huge, screen seemed too big, was really heavy for a laptop, and you should have seen the charger; the damn thing was almost as big as a normal notebook (exagerating), but it is definately at least 2x as big as a normal notebook charger. I think the P4M is a terrible part, and has been released to market way too early. Just my $0.02

I have a couple of friends with Dell 8200's with the mobile P4. Battery life is decent, 4 hours of full use. As far as problems go, there weren't any major bugs under win2k. The only bug was with the Radeon 7500 drivers. They say the speed is fine but I don't know whether they've experienced any slowdowns.

I have used many laptops at work; the Intel P3 & AMD Athlon4 run very similarly. I would recommend both. For Athlons. the Compaq 700 notebooks are pretty nice, and so are the Sony FXAs. I would still avoid the new P4Ms because they don't make a good price/performance notebook.

Get a 1.8a P4, 512MB PC-2100, 40GB HD and a Radeon 7500 That would be ultimate

If I were you I'd go the Intel route until AMD get's their .13µ parts out. as the .18µ Athlons generate more heat and suck down more juice than the .13µ Intel parts. Personally, I'm a fan of the thin and light category, so evaluate your needs to make sure you don't lug around more than you have to

Thanks to everyone that posted, all of you helped plenty. So now for more questions, ICECOOL83 mentioned that AMD will be coming out with there .13 parts, which will run cooler. Is there any news on when they will come out for laptops? And to SPANNER my budget is 0(i wish)-1800, but i am not really in to the whole thin and light cat., but i dont want to be lugging around a crap load of bricks. Also i have heard that Compaq are crap, should i stay away from them? On that note are Toshibas or Sony a good choice? Again thanks to everyone that posted, and i would really appreciate any help on these questions again.
