QuadFX canceled, no dual Phenom system planned

My understanding is that quadfather is dead and buried as far as AMD is concerned. EOL'ed. No further support for future CPU's.

Anyone have recent confirmation or links?

The Quad FX enthusiast platform is dead; AMD killed it in late 2007 and I can't see it returning anytime soon with the performance of AMD's current CPUs vs. Intel's.

If there is a BIOS update for your board, you could buy an Opteron "Barcelona" quad core.

The problem with that is I'm not sure the mobo supports registered RAM.

And I think it would require a BIOS upgrade that doesn't exist.

And slim to no overclocking options or any options really. Meant for stability over performance.

But then again it could be worse, it could use FB-Dimm's (cough intel cough).

Oh well, this CPU is good enough to last me another few years. AMD is dead to me for lying about FASN8/Phenom FX though. The whole selling point of 4x4 was upgradability. Damn Judases.

They didn't necessarily lie to you. The market changed drastically after they designed and released the platform. Since the Phenom is unable to compete with the C2 lineup, there just wasn't a market for the Phenom FX. It was purely a business decision based on market realities to discontinue the FX line.

The whole Skulltrail vs FASN8 thing was an Epeen contest. AMD was silly to participate, they don't have the money to throw away that Intel does. It was a "keeping up with the Joneses" maneuver.

That's my biggest complaint about AMD, they need to stick to churning out good product and ignore any taunts from Intel.

Lie or not -- I'm left without an upgrade path on a machine that was marketed as upgradable. Therefore, I will go with Intel when I buy my next machine. Especially if they stay ahead in the performance wars.

Think about how all of us socket 939 users feel after the release of AM2. However, Intel is notorious for doing the exact same thing on a even bigger scale. I do agree my next box will be an Intel box if they continue to provide the better price vs performance ratio at the time I buy. I am loyal to no brand and will buy what gives me the best bang for the buck.

Yeah, I think S775 has lasted the longest for Intel. They kept fiddling with the sockets to try to keep a lock on chipset sales. I still remember the fail that was their Slot based system, patented of course.

People who spend $600 on a Skulltrail motherboard, $3000 for CPUs, and $200 for memory are left without an upgrade path too.

Nobody lied to you, you choose to buy an expensive platform that was put out just so AMD could offer a quad core platform. I don't think AMD, or anyone else, considered it to be a long-term platform. It was a top of the line system intended for people who had no concern for money, and those are the kind of people who would just sell the board and buy a new system at this point anyway.

If you could afford a $300+ motherboard and $600 pair of CPUs, why are you so worried about an upgrade path?

When AMD launches Shanghai it would be cool if they converted one of their quad-socket server boards into an enthusiast "skulltrail" style board outfitted with double-spaced 4x16 PCIe v2.0 slots.

Sure they'd only sell 5 of them, and probably end up giving away 250 to reviewers, but that would be a neat one-ups-manship way to tackle skulltrails positive PR spin.
