AMD Phenom II 965BE hitting 110*C

for the last month or so, I have been able to game for about 5-10 mins before the computer shuts down, same happens when trying to render something advanced in 3D applications. I never tried to find out why since I rarely game and forgot all about it. I finally got around to it and check the temperatures using speefan while testing in prime95. The processor is hitting around 109*C before it shuts down. Obviously this is exceedingly high..

I have tried cleaning all the dust, reapplying new thermal paste, re-seating the fans and heatsink and setting all BIOS settings to default.

This is a new problem as I have had this cpu for almost 2 years and nothing has happened until recently.

A good question to ask is whether your heatsink/cooler is also reaching 109*C? You can use a regular thermometer, or buy a fancy infrared one to check the heatsink.

i wonder if your heatsink is staying cool, because the chip can't transfer it's heat efficiently to the heatsink? Maybe the heatsink appears to be seated, but it's just a little crooked or somehow not making good contact and not applying a good pressure to ensure heat is transferred efficiently so the chip cooks and the heatsink is too cool.

The heatsink is warm on touch, but I can easily pick it up and hold it without it burning me or feeling too hot. I have tried reseating the heatsink a couple of times, though.

If your temps are rising only under extreme loads, in addition to KingFatty's suggestion, three possiblities come to mind:

1. You need a better HS/fan (more massive and/or a bigger, better fan).

2. You need better air circulation in your case.

3. You applied too much thermal compound.

Thermal compound is intended to fill microscopic gaps between the surface of the HS and the chip. Anything more will impede thermal contact, not improve it.

Try Arctic Silver 5 or one of the other known good ones. If there is any residue from a previous application, Windex works well to remove old compound from both the CPU and the HS/fan.

When you apply the new stuff, use a VERY thin coating. I usually put a small BB size drop on the chip and use my finger to spread it evenly across the entire mating surface of the chip. Windex removes it from fingers, too.

Hope that helps.

Stock heatsink, fans are fine, already cleaned it. I tried to flash the BIOS to see if that would fix it and bricked the motherboard too, I think.

EDIT: Turns out I didn't brick it, but after trying it again, the heatsink is too hot to touch, nevermind hold and there are a couple if 'burn' marks on the cpu and the motherboard.

You sure contact is good? If it's shutting down then heat definitely sounds like a problem, but the heatsink should be very warm at that point IF it is making proper contact.

I doubled checked the heatsink and it is very hot on touch. The temp seems to get very hot within 3 minutes and it cools in about 1 minute.

I feel like an idiot. I never knew the fan and heatsink open so when I said it was clean of dust, it was just the dust I could see. I accidentally opened it and there was a thick layer of dust, I have cleared it and put it back in, so far its at 63*C using prime95 at max. I'll leave it running and see how it goes. Thanks for the help

Yea, dust will definitely do it.

When my CPU temp starts getting asinine I just clear out all the fins and it's all good again.

How can you "pick up and hold" your HSF with the computer running? You do have it mounted to the CPU and mobo properly, right?
