Failed after 2h:20m of OCCT. Core 0. Probably needs more juice.

Crap.....I didn't win the free core lottery today. Took delivery of a 720 chip and it is not a 0904 chip....not extra cores for me.
We don't know if the potential is unlock the 4th core is exclusive to 0904... give it a shot!
Edit: over at XS, someone got 0849 to work.
Not only did I NOT win the 0904 batch lottery, I can't even boot my system with this processor installed. I have a Gigabyte GA-MA790FX DS-5, it is AM3 ready but will not post with the X3 installed. I have the latest bios and all. Maybe my RMA will be the unlockable batch.

I think you could probally go to 3.4GHz with that extra core enabled.

are you talking about werxen? Any ways with Realtemp at 4GHz it reports my CPU temps at 60c full load. I guse with 45nm you have to configer the system. Maybe you should pop your head up and tell them your story on this chip at tom's. I want to see that werxen's replies.

Looks like I've maxed out at 3.3 Ghz @ 1.45v (AOD reports 1.44). OCCT crashes in about 2 minutes with 3.4 Ghz @ 1.475, so I think I've hit the sweet spot on my CPU.

Now that's some bang for the buck right there!

It has got to be the world record for performance/dollar for a retail purchase. (freebies don't count)

I guess it could be, considering I'm using the stock thermal solution. However, if the CPU craps out within the next couple of years...

Not to poke at the situation but I would highly doubt anyone using this mod will have the cpu for many years.

Exactly, and if it does crap out in 2 yrs and the user still wants to keep using a CPU at the same performance level the a replacement at that time will be dirt-cheap on ebay.

Here's a follow up:
I had purchased the X3 and wanted to install in my Gigabyte motherboard, but it wouldn't post. I then purchased an ASrock AOD 790gx board, installed my X3 and it booted right up. I can now confirm the 0851 chips will unlock to 4 cores. I have not done any testing/overclocking yet, I need to put it in the case tonight. Tomorrow, I'll test and see if it will run stable.

I ran occt two hours at stock speeds. No problems. But I can't get this to overclock through the bios at all. I will change the multi and up voltage to 1.4 and when I re-boot it will shut down immediately. I can run AMD overdrive and OC through windows, up to 3.2. Have run occt for a two hours stable with that set-up. I am going to try and shut down the 4th core and oc through the bios and see what happens.

Some new discoveries.
I am running occt at 3.5ghz as I type. Here's what I did:
I disabled ACC in the bios and lost the fourth core. OC to 3.00 was stable. Then I enabled acc to the ALL Cores setting. Sure enough my fourth core came back, and it has given me the ability to OC through the bios. I tried at 3.6 (figured why not go all the way to start) Windows booted up no problem, but occt crashed after maybe 10 seconds. I dropped down to 17.5 multi 3.5ghz. OCCT has been running for 15 minutes now.
I think there is more than one way to enable the fourth core on these chips.
Me thinks AMD is selling quads as triple cores.

I wonder if AMD is deliberately not selling premium AM3 quads in order to not undercut AM2+ 920/940 sales.
