It's a good question, I haven't heard of anyone killing their 45nm AMD chips yet from excessive voltage.

So other than the conservative opinion on what is bad or good based on what AMD says is the spec, I suppose no one can really answer your question yet.

Unless someone here has come across a reporting or two of dead Phenom II's? If you have please let us know.

The 45nm chips start to deteriorate quickly when you get them into the high 1.5s

I don't doubt this to be true, but no one really expects otherwise to begin with.

What we are lacking is the data to substantiate our opinions that this is the case.

Even something as simple as a few forum posters posting first-hand experience of degredation would be better than the current lack of anything remotely resembling data/proof.

i run my 940BE up to 1.55V on air temps never break 56C load idle is around 38C

i have not had it that long, but its a cooler chip + cooler on the NB temps compared to my 9850BE

as for the 65nm 9850BE its been running excess of 1.5V for over a year now.

...I just tried enabling ACC (auto) on my new Asus 790/750 mobo with a Phenom II 720 - wouldn't POST.

...I believe it was a 0907 though. Maybe they just don't do the trick.

Is the number we're looking for in the serial number on the box? Cause I just got my chip, memory and Case from newegg. The IHS on the CPU reads CACZC AC 0904DPCW. So does this mean I have the CPU everyone is talking about?

Mine's 0904CPAW, so it's lookin' pretty good for you, methinks!

Bummer. Not all 790/SB750 mobos can do the trick, though. It depends on the BIOS.

The Gigabyte mobo is being shipped from CA. so it won't get here til Friday. Just as well, I'm tired.
So when it's all built, It'll look like this:

PhenomII 720BE
Gigabyte GA-MA790GP-UD4H
4GB (2x2GB) G.Skill DDR2 1066
2x500 GB Seagate Drives RAID-0
GTX280 (maybe, eventually. using onboard initially)
Corsair 750TX
Thermaltake V9 Black Edition
Vista32
24" Acer LCD.

No idea if the Gigabyte board will suffice for this try at unlocking, but this is the board they are using over at XS along with the ASUS 790 board. I'll update Friday night or Saturday afternoon with luck or lack thereof.

I havn't got a chance to OC mine yet, but surely enough I see 4 procs in task manager with ACC on.
Is there a good complete guide for tweaking bios settings for 790 mobos with PII in general, or preferably Biostar TA790GX?

Here is one i found. Well it's kinda late, took me long enough to lap the CPU and put the whole thing together, plus I still need to get my Yate Loons and Kaze Ultra from petra's...

Maybe the tsen guy is working for AMD trying to turn more ATers anti-intel; I for one have shifted one step further toward advocating PII over intel's offerings with his trolling :|

You should never switch your preferences or shift your position just to spite a spammer/troll.
Don't change for other peoples actions. It doesn't make sense. It shows you can be steered. Albeit in the opposite direction, but your still steered.

well that was sort of tongue-in-cheek, you know. when making purchasing decisions I only judge products by their merits. the only time when favoritism toward a manufacturer has a role is when both products are nearly equally as good for what I do, as things are now. when there was a clear favorite (i.e. c2d/c2q vs pre-phenom II AMD), then I don't let this interfere with my decision process

I just finished setting up vista on my unlocked x3, but I am having some severe artifacts with anything 3d in it. While I think it is entirely HD4830 related, who knows. There will be another post on this in video forums once I gather some more clues.

Hmm, have you tried Prime95 or OCCT yet?

Are the artifacts polygons, or something like checkered textures?

the latter. isn't this typical of defective onboard frame buffer on the vid card?

corsair 850TX goodness, like the best part of my whole system. PSU would be the last thing to suspect
I just realized I installed vista using a not-so-usable vlite disc that lacked automatic updates service (dunno, must have been a mistake). Gonna have to reinstall everything all over again, just great!

BIG EDIT: everything is fine after I played some fatalfake to make sure it was the video problem. now video playback is also back to normal. weird. I just hope it isnt anything recurring.. Another problem that I forgot to mention and also perished was some serious crackling while playing HD-DVDs with powerDVD. whatever that was, glad its all gone.

EDIT 2: so along comes a revelation: not everyone gets lucky; it actually WAS the unlocking causing that artifacting and random errors that popped up ever so rarely. When I wasn't seeing the errors, I had the 4th core disabled. Once the 4th core is unlocked, I am getting all that plus some random errors sporadically. Not that it matters, I just needed a fast OCable gaming CPU. unlocking was a bonus if anything.

Ah, sad news. Can you post which date code you got please? It would be interesting to see if they are the same as the others who have this working.

Bummer. The silver lining in this, though, is that some games benefit by having more cache per core rather than more cores.

I see. actually I was just going to ask that question, whether you get extra L2 cache to go with when you unlock the core. guess not

Sorry modular, I did not get to read it off the CPU before I mounted the HS and its a pain in the ass to taket off... Is it somewhere on the box? (to be honest, I made a mistake of lapping the CPU without noting that information... stupid me)

Gazelle, I would appreciate if you could help me with relevant settings since we have the same mobo.
I take it everything you need is in the "T-Series" tab.

DRAM Timing Configuration -> Memory Clock Mode [Limit or Manual], Memclock Value .......... this is for setting the ram divider I guess
CPU FID/VID Control -> Custom P-States [Enabled], NB FID ........... does this fix the NB at this value? As per what CPUID is reporting, my NB speed with 250mhz ref clock is 2500mhz, even when I set this value to 2000mhz.
Hyper Transport Configuration -> HT Link Speed ........... the description on the right makes it sound like this will only pull up the HT if told to and feasible but won't stop it from going any higher, correct? I tried changing this value and it would always be at 2000Mhz.

Also, have you noticed if changing the chipset and/or HT voltage helps your overclock?

TIA!

I have my new system together and installing Vista32 and drivers. In a few minutes, I'll try to unlock the 4th core. Lets see if this puppy boots.

Hey guys, guess what.

Unlocked and booted Vista. Task Manager and CPUz shot

So now what? LOL

I think I have Cool n Quiet enabled hence the 800MHz reading. OCCT shows that as well for the first minute of monitoring, then bumps up to 2.8GHz. Checking now for errors.

Might be a dumb question, but do I need to raise the Vcore now that I am running 4 cores instead of 3? Or is this automatic?

OCCT shows 1.01 VCore at Idle, when the CPU is at 801.7MHz, but raises to 1.31 VCore as the CPU ramps up to 2.8GHz under full load. Normal?

Just a reminder, this is a CACZC AC 0904DPCW. So nobody has to go back and hunt for it.

EDIT: Good Morning!

Left the PC running a 30 minute OCCT run last night and went to bed. Made my coffee, and walked over to the PC and it was off. I thought immediately that it crashed. I hit the space bar, and it woke up. LOL. Just in "hibernate" mode. So OCCT results were on the screen, and there were no errors.

Baby steps.

I have a few questions regarding monitoring utilities, such as:

What is the most used temp monitoring, voltage monitoring, software for PhenomII's?
What are the correct testing parameters for OCCT? Just in case I'm doing this wrong.
VCore shows 1.31v under full load. Is this what PhenomII X4's report?

Thanks!

a lil frustrating.. I didn't get to do any OCCT yet, the system crashes after about a half hour of light gaming.

this is at 3.25Ghz (250x13), 2000HT 2000NB, 667DDR2 4-4-4-8
voltages: 1.525vcore (kinda high, i know..), 2.3ram 1.4chipset 1.4ht

don't think its a temp issue, temp reading just after a crash is no higher than 30C.
must be doing something wrong here...

Now running ORTHOS. Two instances, first instance affinity Core0 and Core1, second instance affinity Core2 and Core3. Small FFTs.
How long til considered stable? 6hrs. good?

Going out for a few hours. I'll let this run and let you know results when I return.
Wake up sleepy heads!! LOL

I didn't need to bump Vcore when I enabled the 4th core. I was curious about that, too, and the reported voltage was the same (1.31v) whether operating on 3 cores or 4.
I use Everest for my temp/voltage/fan readings. Unfortunately, I haven't found any utility that displays accurate core temps, just CPU temp.
1v @ idle is spot-on.

Congrats on 4th Core!

Went to bed at 4am... must get coffeeeee.......

Do you have the NB/HTT set to 2000 in BIOS, or 1600 and your 250fsb has them boosted to 2000?

I am experimenting with both and trying to tell which is better... which one is the proper way to do it?

I changed the RAM divider/timing to 667DDR2 (417mhz actual) and cas4 5-5-5-15 @2.3v. Originally they are rated cas4 4-4-4-12 @2.2v (Patriot Viper)

Ok, then so far we are right in line. ORTHOS still good at 3 hrs. 15 minutes. After about 6 hrs. I'll start messing with the unlocked multi.

And yes, Koffy eez GuD!
