Sigh. They were still flagship dies though. Polaris is not AMDs flagship die. Is it? I cant figure out what the point is that you are trying to make, or why whatever point that might be, is still standing.
Sorry but Im not following.
Well 1070/1080 aren't flagship gpus either.

This is also assuming rx480 is on par with R9 390X, just purely on Tflop numbers due to raised clocks because of a die shrink. There is potential for further improvement from architectural changes, and there is also a potential of regression in performance due to narrower memory bus.

So come 29th it should be really interesting to see how it does.

I personally think there is potential for more performance than we expect, since even Tonga was a perf/Tflop improvement over R9 390X Hawaii arch.

I wouldn't worry about narrower memory bus. Hawaii features no memory compression, whereas Polaris has second generation compression. It was one of the touted features. Plus, memory speed is 33% higher. Tonga proved that it could match Tahiti with a smaller bus. Now with further improvements, I'm betting the effective bandwidth of Polaris will be similar or higher than Hawaii despite the smaller bus.

It would be disappointing if it only matched 390X, overall. It kinda seems impossible given how many improvements they claim for GCN 4.

Why then get involved in the conversation when you don't understand what's being discussed?

Anyone who has followed the GPU market for a while can clearly understand my point. rx480 can be disruptive, it wouldn't be the first time, AMD has done it before.

If you don't understand it feel free to read Anandtech reviews for those products and get informed.

Adorable.

I am not putting up with your thread crapping. AGAIN, instigating others.

Which would still make the reference 1070 about 15% faster than a 1500 MHz RX 480 (assuming the 1266 MHz version is equal to the 390X), so either way they wouldn't really be in the same performance category.
In half a year driver development and more dx12 games into the mix and its probably the same. The issue is imo if 480 can oc so much and has 390x perf at standard clock. I think thats a stretch but we will know in time. Another perhaps bigger issue is if gf can make those cards in sufficient numbers for both apple, mobile and desktop.

Gibbo from ocuk already said availability of 480 will be ample.

also don't expect 980ti lvl performance and don't believe fake hype.

Yeah, going by history those two factors (DX12 and drivers) would seem to be in AMDs favor.

With that being said though, it's a bit of an open question how much AMD will be able to squeeze out of driver improvements this time around. With GCN 1 they were on a completely new architecture and the launch drivers were kinda crappy, thus leaving a lot of room for improvement, which AMD took advantage of. With GCN 4 (i.e. Polaris) it kinda depends on how different it really is. If it doesn't differ that much from GCN 3, then the launch drivers will probably be of better quality, thus leaving less room for improvement (of course the same could be said of Pascal, which appears to differ much less from Maxwell than Kepler did from Fermi).

DX12 is upon us, driver improvements or no, things are only going to get better for AMD.

I reckon next year virtually all AAA games will be either DX12 or Vulkan. Even the upcoming titles this year seem to all support the new APIs.

If these clocks are true, I recon rx480 AIB could trade blows with 1070 in Battlefield 1 (biggest blockbuster of the year) for instance.

I don't think anybody expects 980ti level performance.

Most people expect 390x/980 performance.. (which honestly doesn't stroke with 470 released benchmarks.).
Others expect Fury performance (e.g. between 980 and 980ti) about 20% slower then 1070
