That's a pretty bold statement from RTG.

Delivering 90% of the performance for less than half the price?

Though this would be versus the 1070 rather than 1080.

Has to be about the price. To assume anything else is to set yourself up for disappointment

https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/4pill0/verified_large_quantity_launch_for_rx_480/

I just left MicroCenter in Overland Park, Kansas and got confirmation they are receiving 100 RX 480 units on the 28th of June. They confirmed that they will be on shelves June 29th for sale.
They also confirmed for the 1080/1070 launch they only received 4/7 cards for that day. They are incredibly impressed how many cards they are expecting to receive for launch day.
Just FYI...
Edit: Added their launch quantity for 1080 units.

AMD seems to have some sizable quantity ready.

Four 1080's? No wonder people camped out.

Getting a HUNDRED RX480's must feel like a godsend.

100 units good? only 4/7 units of 1080? Whats that? a local hardware store in Africa? the guy that make that one up had no idea.

High doubt its made up. We have already heard from several retails that they are receiving large quantities of RX 480. And we already know that 1080/1070 have been released in very low quantities.

Oh, and that was 4 1080's, and 7 1070's.

I want to believe, but the only hard evidence we have is pretty lackluster: a mediocre Steam VR test and a baffling crossfire vs 1080 bench. And it was AMD who provided those. For the life of me I can't understand why they would use the Steam VR numbers, it seems like the opposite of a good idea. So to me it seems the only two options are they've pulled a fast one and have underpromised and overdelivered, or it's not as exciting as we thought.

Unfortunately, I'm in the same boat, but I guess some things recently have given me hope.

Hope for the best (390X + 10% stock, 20-25% OC), expect the worse (390 stock, 10% OC).

If it arrives in between (390X stock, 15-20% OC), then at least it's not a disappointment.

That's the way I see it.

Either way, I am downed for a few RX 480s. Just in time for end of financial year tax deductions and heck, I may buy a whole load just to get them to print $ via mining.

It's hard to argue against a GPU that pays for itself real quick and then earns $.

Pretty much. I still think there's a good chance that the public drivers the leakers are using do not support Polaris, and that it's getting fed a codepath for older versions of GCN that is providing suboptimal results. Driver optimizations can easily make a difference of 10% or so, with more to come down the line.

We also shouldn't discount the possibility that even if average frame rates are on par with Hawaii, minimum frame rates might be substantially better. A few leaks and rumors point in this direction, and while it's not certain by any means, it isn't out of the question. It would make sense for AMD to focus on this because frame rate consistency is very important for VR (a major focus of this card) and because a lot of gamers would rather get a consistent and smooth 60 FPS than an average of 65 FPS that can vary from 50-70 depending on scene.

The current leaks make it hard to believe that even just 480:1070 will be anywhere close to 4870:280.

4850 ($200) was 70-75% of a 280.
4870 ($300) was 85-90% of a 280.

If the stock 4GB version of 480 is equivalent to the 390X and the $300 versions come overclocked to 1500 MHz as rumoured, then performance will be roughly as follows:

Stock RX 480 ($200) is 70-75% of a 1070.
After-market RX 480 ($300) is 85-90% of a 1070.

So it would appear to me that this situation is actually perfectly comparable.

Of course one could argue that the proper equivalent of the 280 is the 1080 and not the 1070, but the pricing of the 280 at $500 (after the 4850/4870 forced Nvidia to drop the price) is arguably closer to the current prices of the 1070 ($410-480 on newegg) than those of the 1080 ($620-720 on newegg). Of course if Nvidia does a similar price drop on the 1080 as they did on the 280, then the 1080 would be the proper comparison point (the 1080 being about 20-25% faster than the 1070).

Detailed look at Crimson's new OC built in tool. Custom voltage for a range of power states along with custom fan curves.

Fan is very low RPM.

A pair of RX 480 in CF:

That's pretty crappy. Hopefully it's similar to the chinese leak earlier at 1340 MHz, where the guy forgot to increase the power limit.

It's a reference card with a single 6-pin power connector, so I'm not at all surprised that it can't overclock very much.

If custom cards can't overclock that would be a different story entirely.

Yeah. But if it's 1379mhz, it's either without +vcore or Polaris is also a crap overclocker like Pascal.

I suspect this is the case :

I agree.

Was it not that power goes up with voltage squared ?
Power increases exponential when voltage is increased ?
