The weakest point of AMD's reference design is certainly the thermal solution. It doesn't use any heatpipes or other high-tech means to keep the card cool. Rather, there is a big slab of metal, with a copper core that has the blower fan sending air across its fins. As a result we are seeing temperatures of up to 84°C, which has the effect that the card will clock down further to keep cool. On average our card ran 1239 MHz, which is in the upper range of AMD's rated 1120 - 1266 MHz clock window. What's even worse than the heat is the terrible fan noise. While idle noise is fine with 29 dBA (an idle-fan-off feature would still have been nice), in gaming the fan ramps up a lot, emitting 41 dBA noise during gaming (not Furmark). This makes the RX 480 the loudest card launched in recent history, much noisier than for example GTX 1080 (which is almost twice as fast). AMD has mentioned to us that the reference design is deliberately weak to leave room for partners to improve on their custom designs. To me this sounds a bit like "let the partners deal with the problem".

AMD are idiots, and it seems like they basically did not learn anything from the 290x launch.

Well it is slower then the 980 AND consuming more power and is barely any smaller than a 980 This for a card on a smaller process..

I expected a lot more...
this performance with 110W would be ok but going over 150W?

Nvidia doesn't need a 1060 to compete, they can compete with the 980 just fine...
Unles TPU is a big outlier in power consumption... nvidia seems to wins this round as well. (and i'm an AMD fan )

Well I guess it comes down to crossing our fingers and waiting for the AIB versions now. The reference version isn't outright bad (at least not when looking at the perf/$), but it has enough issues (cooler, power usage, overclockability) to not make it an outright no-brainer.

It might be worth reading the ends of these reviews you're pulling charts from, wherein they arrive at completely different conclusions as the naysayers here. Performance is basically exactly as expected, if not a bit better, with the caveat that power efficiency isn't what we hoped. I don't think that's a reason to spam the thread with "LIES AND HYPE LIES AND HYPE." If you want to compare it an OCed 970, wait for AIB models, as that's not what the reference model is for.

Wow. The RX480 is looking pretty pathetic. I can't believe how disappointed I am. Once again, AMD has let me down. Crazy high power draw, no overclocking headroom, REGRESSION in performance, and a crappy cooler. Well done, AMD. Well, done.

You're comparing it to the wrong cards if you think you're seeing performance regression...

Yeah, definitely hitting the 150W limit already on reference. 1x 6 pin is a ridiculous design.

And it's pretty damn power hungry for a mainstream chip.

~160 watts? worse perf/watt than a 980? thermal throttling? Lots of noise?

Disappointing. Even though the price/$ is totally unmatched.
