Yeah, definitely hitting the 150W limit already on reference. 1x 6 pin is a ridiculous design.

And it's pretty damn power hungry for a mainstream chip.

232mm2 14nm FF, this looks to me like a GloFo/AMD failure.

Going to stay with your 290X? Or actually buying a proper GPU (GP104)?

You're comparing it to the wrong cards if you think you're seeing performance regression...

It's a fail.

Such a small chip, mainstream, should not be using that much power without any OC headroom.

NV should just release a 970/980 with 8GB and call it a day. That's how bad Polaris is.

Regression is simple. 5.8 TFlops, performing around a 390 that has 5.2 TFlops.

From what I gathered from the tech power review, they say if you have a 290 or 290x performance gain is not much. I'm thinking going from my 7970ghz it's only about 40% faster?

Not sure if I should go through and get one. At 1080p it seems great minus assassins Creed but I don't play that.

Here's the takeaway from the reviews I've read:

People here in an enthusiast hardware forum should not buy the reference 480 models available today. They run hot and have no OC headroom. The performance of the chip itself is great, but if you care about heat/power consumption/overclocking, wait for the AIB models. Regular folks who midrange cards cater to will buy this thing in spades because perf/$ is fantastic and they could not care less about the cooling solution on the card.

1080 performance improvement over 980: 70%
1070 performance improvement over 970: 63%
480 performance improvement over 380: 59%

1080 price increase over 980: $50-150
1070 price increase over 970: $50-120
480 price increase over 380: $0-40

Perhaps not as great as some were hoping for (myself included), but pretty much in line with what we've been seeing from 14nm so far.

I still don't understand what's up with the power usage though. I can understand it not hitting the rumoured 100-110W, but actually exceeding it's TDP?

To be honest after reading a few reviews I am disappointed. I won't be buying this and will stick with my current setup for a while longer for Vega or a 1070 (whats a few months after almost 4 years)

Oh wow what a surprise, the guy who was shitting the thread with negativity for the last week has found a reason to be negative.

Yes, power consumption is a disappointment. That's about the only disappointment. Read more of the reviews than the power consumption chart, please.

Definitely GloFlo.

And the second half of this "failure" is good all forum hype. Even the AMD press info was damning, but nope the hype train just kept speeding up.

Woof, how quickly they turn on you. Considering Silver has been more than optimistic for the products, this is rather odd to read.

Disappointed ATI fan here
The performance & price is fine, it's the power draw and noise that worries me.

Using TPU's numbers, and assuming your 7970GHz ~ 280X, the RX 480 is 43% faster @ 1080p.

It might be worth reading the ends of these reviews you're pulling charts from, wherein they arrive at completely different conclusions as the naysayers here. Performance is basically exactly as expected, if not a bit better, with the caveat that power efficiency isn't what we hoped. I don't think that's a reason to spam the thread with "LIES AND HYPE LIES AND HYPE." If you want to compare it an OCed 970, wait for AIB models, as that's not what the reference model is for.

Excactly from tpu assesment the perf is a bit better than what we could hope for but efficiency is bad. I guess the 8gb cost perf and gf process not up to it. The value is fantastic.

I already sold my 290X for $250 USD equivalent. Thankfully.

But I also already bought 2x RX 480, paid for two hours ago. lol

Guess I have this to look forward to...

Jesus BF1 better have good CF support or I will tear AMD a new one.

Even [H] gave it a positive review! I don't understand this thread...

Man, I have no hope for Vega, too. I can't believe a 14nm FF GPU that is suppose to get 2.8X in performance/watt fail this badly. The power draw is HORRIBLE. This is by far one of the worst cards in recent memories from a technical standpoint.

I normally would be this disappointed if it was on 28nm or something. But, to draw over 150 freakin watts for a 14nm mid-range card. Man, I'm done with AMD. What an utter fail.

I guess only 43% is better than anything. Considering its cheap and I plan on getting Vega later and possibly a new monitor later it may work out getting an aib model until Vega comes out. I just don't feel like spending extra for the 1070 even though I can afford it.

Next gen Performance/watt per TPU is awful. 167W peak power usage with 163W typical. That's a disaster because 1070 is 50-53% faster while using less power. My expectations for Vega are now at an all time low.

This means with a full node shrink and a new GCN architecture AMD didn't even match 980's performance/watt.
