But to sit here and call the card a failure, to spam the thread with "OH WOW HYPE AND LIES," despite the fact that it met and exceeding it's performance targets and is a great value, is just insanity.
My statement was made in relation to AMDs claims, not expectations in this thread.

Yup...the more I go through all the benchmarks the more it's clear the real selling point on this card is cross fire. I mean...only needing two 6 pin power plugs and $398 to crossfire and basically achieve 1080 performance is incredible.

How is that incredible? I'd still take 1070 over that.

I've just finished the Anandtech review and didn't check others yet, but first thoughts are somewhat disappointing, the whole non fixed memory clock spec, and $40 and not $30 increase for the 8GB model...

also, the card is clearly behind a stock 970 in some games, so it's hopeless against a 970 OC, and the power usage is not that much lower... still, it's faster on the DX12 AMD games, by a decent margin...

now coming back to looking at this card as a successor to the 380/380X, and it's pretty good, looking at how bad Hawaii power usage was, it's pretty good for it being this close to it... and this is their first GPU at GloFo? not to bad

overall I think (and hope) this can be a big success.

but now let me go back to reading other tests, maybe my opinion will change, maybe not..

I currently have a 7970... So this card will give me 1 more GB, and draw 90 watts less than what I currently have. For the same performance... For $200... Not bad actually. I'd be happy with that. My biggest complaint about the 7970 is the noise level so 90 watts less should fix that up.

Why does [H}'s one consumes less then a 970 while other cards are at 160 Watts? WTF

Reference cards are a mixed bag? Shocker. Buy AIB everyone.

We won't know for sure until we see what the third party cards look like, but my guess is that the reference cards are shipping whatever silicon could meet the bare minimum requirements.

And damn straight, I have been very generous to AMD lately, very little bad things said actually. I was expecting 390X performance from the 5.8TFlops because to me, regressing on a next-gen GCN is just unthinkable.. but there they went and did it, AMD went full retard.

You realize this is not a 390X replacement? It's a 380X replacement...there will be a 490 later and then a Fury replacement after that. They just brought their mid range card to last years high end performance card level at half the cost.

same performance!? this card is at the R9 290 level, not 7970

Looks like for the average consumer it's turning out to be as good as the denied rumors made it sound like.

Going to rebuild my media pc soon with guts from my former gaming one and thinking one of these may soon replace the 480 gtx it's using.

You need 480$, 320W to reach 180W 1080 performance. Assuming CF scales well and actually works.

indeed. The only selling point is price. Everything else is basically fucked up.

The only way AMD stands any change this iteration of gpu's if the 480 would consume ~100-110W.

They missed that milestone by 50%.
460/470/480 are basically screwed if nvidia lower the price of 970/980 or launches 1060 and can deliver.

Yeah, lol, how can he claim he's being fair to AMD when he's making an inherently unfair comparison?

It looks like the binning is all over the place. Reviews are showing massive variances in power consumption and overclocking.

So, can we say GloFo sucks money balls? That's the conclusion I'm getting from this. GloFo is going to be the death of AMD. I'm worry for Zen and Vega.

And no, that 1x 6 pin is inexcusable, now the card has no OC capabilities. Is it going to make me a happy gamer if custom AIB cards come out with 8 pin and run at 1.5ghz? No it's not, cos that's later and inflated in price.

This is a fail. But I still bought 2 because there's nothing better currently for the price here. -_- $379 AUD for RX 480 8GB. A GTX 970 is $449 AUD, GTX 980 is over $600 AUD..

If that makes any sense!!
Everyone and his brother have told you this TFlops assesment was nonsense even after 25 post where you wrote the same. What were you trying to tell yourself ? Lol. Yet the card still manage to get to 390x level. With 4 ace 32 rops and lacking bandwith. Thats super fine imo. But clearly they got there by going high freq.

Got in on a Gigabyte 480 from newegg, it was the first one to unlock for me so i hopped on it quick. I might still try Micro Center on my lunch break and see if they have any left.

Performance per Watt is important again.

I don't care about perf/watt itself but in how it ties into the flagship card(s) down the line. That's because AMD/NV are both limited by the die size and upper end power usage. If NV wins in perf/watt by 50%+, it means AMD will need a much larger die to keep up. This time NV already tapped out a 610mm2 GP100, which means AMD won't have any die size advantage to play with. Even if GP102 has a 450mm2 die, AMD is going to need to make up A LOT of ground in perf/watt to have any chance to be as fast as Big Pascal. I am not counting on it.

----

RX 480 seems to be a mainstream R9 380/380X replacement based on all the reviews. Pretty clear AMD supporters set this card up to fail by not understanding where it was in the next generation AMD line-up: Mainstream/Performance Low End.

Performance against Hawaii at 1440p falls off a cliff.

A good replacement for the low-end GTX950/960/R9 270/270X/R9 380 tier but in itself is a potentially massive warning flag for Vega 10 and 11 given the massive gap in perf/watt go NV's highly efficient GTX1070/1080 cards.

Silicon lottery is real, reviews are all over the place. Its no wonder we saw so many conflicting leaks. For AMD's sake I hope AIB are better. At this point, I would probably take the 470 for 1080p and save the cash since the 480 seems stretched too thin especially over 1080p. 470 will probably be the real value of the Polaris generation.

Looks like Vega going to be another 300W monster
Perfect replacement for my R9 290
