People who are comparing 480 with GTX 1070 are insulting human intelligence.

480 is for VR entry with a good performance. It is on par with R9 390 on stock and even if it OC then still it is no way near GTX 1070. It cannot be OC like people are hyping it and whole purpose of the card is demolished by it. Its main goal is performance per watt.

Insulting human intelligence you said..?..

Polaris is clocked 20% higher and has 10% less SPs, even if it was a die shrink it would perform 10% better just with thoses parameters.

Then Tonga, wich is surely not as advanced as Polaris, display 10-14% better efficency/Hz than Tahiti, that makes how much..?..

Add 20% frequency above the stock 1.26GHz, that s what, 1.1 x 1.1 x 1.2 = 1.45x the perf of a 390 clocked at 1.05GHz.

As for perf/watt there s enough of it at stock, it s not 20% higher frequency that will change the pic, that s 2.33x rather than the stated 2.8x...

There are pretty much two levels of benchmarks going around. One group puts them at ~390X/980 level, while others put them at ~Fury level / >980/390X.

Oh wait, there's a third group, Nvidia fanbois putting it down at ~390/970 level. Never seen a benchmark about that though.

In terms of pure compute performance, GTX 1070 has about 6.46 TFlops on full boost clock. A 2304-shader Polaris 10 chip could match that throughput at 1400 MHz. The question then becomes whether Polaris can close the gap with Maxwell and Pascal in translating theoretical performance into real-world gaming results.

For DX12 games, yes. I'm betting ~1.4 GHz 480 is on par with 1070 in DX12. No for DX11. I'm going to guess upwards of 1.5 GHz is required to match 1070 in DX11 games. Still a solid improvement over older GCNs though.

how are you so sure without benchmarks?

Another troll and irresponsible hype from Red team. AMD is comparing their card with R9 390 and yet some people are dreaming and hyping it to on par with GTX 1070.

AMD never said They want to fight GTX 1070.Why do you accuse them ?

You see, its a bad day for consumers when a $230 card manages to OC to reach a stone's throw distance of a $380 one because that is not supposed to happen according to the green camp.

many people said in this forum that Fury X will be 40% faster then Titan X ,so that happened? Many people on this forum said Polaris will be on par with GTX 1080 ,so did that happen?

Polaris is comparable to R9 390 ,which even AMD is mentioning in their slides,

http://videocardz.com/61064/amd-polaris-10-and-polaris-11-specifications

6.3 score for VR benchmark .

And OCing changes the VR benchmark a lot, taken from reddit - https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/4o6hx8/psa_steam_vr_performance_test_is_heavily/

Stock 290 = 6.3, 7% OC = 7, 12%OC = 7.2

This is an OC GTX 980 Ti 1480mhz. See the framtime.

Right now an GTX 980 Ti custom version second hand are being sold are around $330-$360 depends on the model. Value of GTX 980 Ti has dropped a lot ,which has better value then a RX 480 8GB model.

When you say Red team, it means AMD.if you want , say AMD fanboy or whatever it is but don't use "Red team" for people out of AMD that say some BS or false claim.

...is this a joke?

The 980 Ti overclocked will consume like twice the power of RX480, while being a good $100 more expensive.

If you OC both GTX 980 Ti and 480 then i am pretty much sure that GTX 980 Ti will have around 40-50% more performance ,however, it will consume more watts then 480.

Even if it didn't comparing heavily discounted and overclocked second hand cards to new is weird.
Even a worse GTX 980 Ti can easily reach to 1400mhz. In forum people make dam a lot of fail assumptions and BS.

May game released GTX 980 TI performance

These are all OC benchmarks. Are Cards OC to their limits

The thing is that AMD will have a bad time with Maxwell price drop and it may hurt 480 launch.

This is getting a bit bizzare

Precisely like with the fire sale 290's vs the 960 - even if the prices vaguely overlap they're entirely different cards with different markets.

If NV did want to spoil the 480's launch they'd be doing it with cheap 970/80's. Given that they stopped producing those things a little bit back - and have good inventory control so no huge stocks to clear - that obviously isn't the plan.

In fact their ceasing 970/80 production a little bit back is one of the best signs that the 1060 is due soon enough.

Where do you get this kind of information? Overhyping is one thing but to deliberately put down the card to this level is disgusting.

Why is one worse than the other?

AMD posted an official VR score for the 480 at 6.3. The 470 for example cant even reach the minimum VR requirements. Then you can compare with previous AMD cards. The 390 scores 7.0 officially at AMD.

Even AMD is saying that performance is near R9 390 and still some members are having a so much hard time understand that. That is why never over hype, over estimate, and over predict the performance and specially AMD.
