This is about the perfect card for me, it should best my overclocked 7950 by 50%+ while being a lot cooler. Only thing I sad about is the lack of DVI as my HDMI is populated by my Xbox One on my monitor. I'm a "Budget" gamer and dedicated my self to stay 1080p for a few more years until 4k is mainstream.
Time to buy a DVI to HDMI adaptor.

I'm interested in 1070 vs 480 bench marks graphs. Hopefully by the end of the month we will have some to look at.

If it performs similar in respect to fps then I could save myself a bit of money.

the 1080 seems to be a product that has no market.

Except for those who wants the fastest card, even though it is not the best price /performance ratio. Which might not be the largest group but nvidia has good margins on these cards.

RX 480 = 1266mhz x 2304 shaders = 5.833 TFlops
One issue with your post, so far AMD has only confirmed >5 TFlops and that would only be ~1100 MHz. That 1266 MHz bench could have been a test to see general stability at higher clocks, similar to what Nvidia did with the >2000 MHz demo. I would stick with the lower spec unless proven otherwise.

That does seem more likely, but there might also be a 480X that runs at 1266 MHz or has more SPs if the 480 has 4 CUs disabled. I think that we get a low-end 480 for the $200 starting price, but I think we also get a 480X at ~$300, with an 8 GB 480 somewhere in the middle.

I asked robert Hallock this on reddit take his reply however you'd like.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/commen...s_image_quality_controversy/d3t1lmq?context=3

Me:

In your computex presentation slide you claimed >5 TFlops compute performance with an SP count of 2304 and a tdp of 150 watts Some have taken this to mean that the shipping TDP of the RX 480 is 150 watts.
To me it seems that those figures were very deliberately chosen,as giving an exact TDP along with the other information you presented would have given away more of the performance profile of the chip than you desired to at this time.
Am I correct in assuming that the 150W TDP can be taken as a variable representing Max power draw just as your >5 TFlops rating is a variable representing the minimum amount of Tflops you will be offering with this GPU?
Both of these factors of course being heavily influenced by your as yet unannounced clocks I understand if you can't answer, however people are using this info to make flimsy arguments against your perf/watt improvement claims so I thought it worth mentioning.

His Reply:

Astute questions, but this veers into NDA territory. Let's revisit this soon.

lol your comment "Maybe I should look for a career in tech journalism, it seems no one before me thought to ask these questions =p"

Believe me they asked or they're only allowed to ask certain questions. Welcome to NDA.

I was being tongue in cheek but when you have HC posting things like this

https://twitter.com/hardwarecanucks/status/737845240724234240

which if intentional is just FUD but I'll be generous and defer to Hanlon's Razor on that one.

Regardless these tech "press" deserve a good jab once in a while

Yeah, welcome to the strict nature of NDA. I saw a movie once early and we weren't even allowed to say we saw the movie lol.

I'm actually half impressed that AMD guy is chatting on reddit of all places. He did answer a few questions.

Anyways, going to wait of course before passing judgement on way or the other.

//EDIT: To clarify this, the scaling from 1->2 GPUs in the dual RX 480 test we assembled is 1.83x. The OP was looking only at the lowest draw call rates when asking about the 51%. The single batch GPU utilization is 51% (CPU-bound), medium is 71.9% utilization (less CPU-bound) and heavy batch utilization is 92.3% (not CPU-bound). All together for the entire test, there is 1.83X the performance of a single GPU in what users saw on YouTube. The mGPU subsystem of AOTS is very robust

I think AMD January statement, which they claim that they will take back high GPU performance crown from Nvidia in 2016 that really did the damage to Polaris hype. When Pascal was near to launch , then only AMD said they are targeting mainstream market and totally change their position.

That is why it damaged some AMD market cap.
Stock price: AMD (NASDAQ) $4.13 -0.30 (-6.77%)

I agree.
This would be the ideal card for me too. I am a casual gamer. I do not need the best of the best as that would be a waste of money. But it will be a huge step forward going from an APU. I would really like to play some more games as for example the new doom and a discrete modern card for a good price would be ideal. I do think i will go for the 8GB version. I hope that translated to euro's, that an 8GB card will be around 260-270 euro after VAT tax and everything.

Are those cards going to be as efficient as NVIDIA's offering?

The GTX 1070 pushes ~6.5 TFLOPS, 150W and requires a 8-pin pcie power connector.
The RX 480 pushes 5.5TFLOPS, 150W and requires a 6-pin pcie power connector.

where is the AMD can only draw a max of 150 watts, the GTX 1070 can go beyond that. If AMD really was using 150 watts they would put an 8pin power connector on there not a 6 Pin.

and that has anything to do with the performance/benchmarks of polaris how?

Nobody expects the 480 to compete with the 1070 in performance. There is very little doubt that the performance of the 480 will be lower than the 1070.

Stock 480 performance should be somewhere around what the stock 390x is now, give or take a few %.

Well for me I will look at bench marks for fps at 1080p separately for each card. I don't care if one card is better than the other, is it really the better card for me per say.

I still believe that a fully unlocked 40CU, 2560sp 480X @ 1300mhz will equal a 1070 stock for stock.

You are completely wrong.

They stated from the announcement that Polaris was going to be a way to bring 290/970+ performance (VR requirement) at a low price period to make the TAM for VR from 7.5m -> 100m.
