On topic: Is there any reason for the review embargo to end the day of release, and not a day or two earlier? Seems like an earlier end would be more convenient for the customer, but that's just me.

It would be good for us consumers but at the same time they don't want to be sabotaged by anyone. How many buy the reference models though? Most people here usually wait for reviews and AIB models.

There are between 5 and 10 such individuals on Nvidia/Intel's side, and maybe 2 or 3 AMD fanboys who are just as bad. I strongly suspect some of these people may not be mere fanboys, but paid marketing shills. If it were up to me, all these people would be banned. And the resulting quality of conversation on the board would go way up.

Haha, only 2 or 3? Hahaha. Are you counting the ones who spend time accumulating talking points on SA forums and then smear it all over the internet (including here)? Both sides have their insufferable fanboys but the charlatans on the AMD side are something else.

---

Anyways, back on Polaris, the rumors are flying off the rails. I'm skeptical about the latest ratcheting of clock speeds in the rumor mill. Pascal had that particular rumor as well and it turned out to be blatantly false despite much straw-grasping. People are just hyping new process nodes way too much.

If AMD does really introduce the same die at $250/$300 price points based on overclocking ability, it will be interesting to see how the enthusiast community deals with it. A lack of power connectors never stopped anyone from flashing the firmware and running beyond PCI-E spec :sneaky:.

I wouldn't pay more for OC models, since half the fun of owning GPUs is to manually OC it yourself. There's more satisfaction in that.

You might have to though if the model you have doesn't have the power (only 1 6 pin connector) to drive clockspeeds. It's starting to sound like the AIB partners are going to offer reference cards with 1 6 pin connector closer to $200, and OC models closer to $300 with the extra power connector.

This is true. And if people can simply buy a $200-$240 card and get $300 performance, that's a win for enthusiasts. And by extension it's a win for AMD too. Then there are the great unwashed masses. They will buy the O/C models. Just like I'm sure EVGA has never had an issue selling every FTW card they've ever made.

Shills are pros. They know how to sell a product subtly while never drawing attention it it. The greatest trick the shill pulls off is no one ever suspecting they are shills. You are insulting them by comparing them with delusional fanboys. The fanboys are the sort who come off as irrational trolls, anyone from a mile away will know not to take them seriously.

To be fair, AMD has done this for the past generation releases as well. Not exactly a new move.

Reviewers give them a lot of slack for "paper launches". Embargo lifting on the same day as proper availability is appreciated as a hard launch.

Personally, it's just semantics and doesn't matter. And yes, I would like to see reviews a few days earlier of release too.

Note that has happened a few times too - AMD has let reviewers publish early due to leaks etc. The biggest leaks were for 4850, they in fact even pulled the launch in by a couple of weeks.

Sigh, i expect the RX480 8GB price here in the Netherlands to be a bit higher.
Import duties and 21% VAT will sure raise the price to above 300 euro.
I would not be surprised if it is around 319 to 329 euro here when the sales start.

There are no import duties on GPUs in EU AFAIK. So any price jumps may not be explained by that.

I sure hope you are right. That leaves the 21% VAT , then prices with a bit of profit for the reseller will still be around 309 to 319 euro.
I sure hope i am wrong about this.

EDIT, I looked it up, when the card comes from outside the EU, there are import duties whenever the price of the article is more then 150 euro(Netherlands).

The price of 319E to 329E seems more and more likely.

Another edit:

Typical tax agency.
At one webpage they say there are import duties.
Then i go to the page of the actual calculation and it say 0% for computer parts.
So, that is good news. That leaves the price only with 21%VAT added : 309E to 319E.

- Some time ago I would have rejected the idea that a given company would pay individuals to do online marketing as such. Not anymore though (we know gov's do it). Other than a mental illness it is the only plausable explanation.

Anyone here going to try and get the reference models? Or are most of us waiting for AIB models?

Well, actually I'm going to wait for the reviews. I don't hold out much hope though for the cooler on such an inexpensive card to be very good. We'll see.

Yea I was thinking the same thing. The PCB should be about the same and reference PCB is usually good. Only difference in the AIB models would be the fan and any other over clocking abilities built in if that's important to someone.
