The 1070 is roughly 40% faster than a 390X, so with an 18-26% overclock on the RX 480, the 1070 would still be about 15-20% faster.
Indeed. And, as you said, it might shock some people but it is possible to overclock a Geforce GTX 1070 as well.
TechPowerUp got ~13.5% more performance out of a Founder's Edition.
This would mean that RX 480 and 1070 actually has fairly comparable perf/$ (at MSRP anyway).
Zero surprise if Radeon RX 480 can beat it in perf/$, that's exactly what you would expect from a mainstream part. Will be really disappointing if GP106 can't deliver better perf/$ than current Pascal VGAs as well.
