The unhype train wants 150W typical board power, 390 performance, less than 10% overclock: mostly a mediocre Hawaii die shrink on a weak 14nm process from GF. Looking at the hype train from this perspective, it does seem supersonic.

+1.

Been saying for months that 480 wouldnt beat 980ti neither 390X on average.
Now we know that wont beat the 980ti, lets see if I was right on the 390X

Silverforce, do you have a link to the leaker?

He went offline really fast, got issued a message on his phone, told to stop leaking NDA info.

So far, can only confirm a few things:

1. New Crimson indeed has expanded OC tools & custom profiles.
2. RX 480 is very quiet on load.

At least we know Wccftech is actually correct with their recent leak about AMD's new OC support in Crimson.

They were also correct about the quietness, and possibly temperatures too. It remains to be seen if they are correct about performance and OC potential.

The way i see it is the R480 should match the 390X at least, and have decent OC potential. Anything else beyond this is a bonus.

Uhm, 390X and 480 are both ~5.8 TFlops. So how could it ever be slower? Given GCN4 improvements it can only be faster.

Where are you getting the 5.8 TFlops figure from? AMD has shown slides with 5.5+ TFLOPS but nothing more as far as I know.

2304(amount of cores)x2(number of instructions per clock)x1.266(core clock) = 5.833 TFLOPs of compute power.

That is simple equation for counting compute power of any modern GPU.

XFX Radeon RX 480 8GB @ Canada:

www.ncix.com/products/?sku=AS2222184288

Looks like the new cards are forcing some price cuts for current models. You can already buy a custom (factory overclocked) Geforce GTX 970 for less than Radeon RX 480 8GB MSRP in China.

While some of us have expected it, I can confirm (from my buddies in PC retail) that Fiji SKUs like Fury/X are discontinued.

No surprise.

In terms of Polaris 10, it's a mainstream chip, 232mm2, low power. GP104 is a traditional mid-range chip in size & power.

Would probably be 250-260mm² in TSCM's process, that's already ~80% of GP104's die size. If it only matches Radeon R9 390X, it's nowhere near 80% GP104's performance.

3-4 months to vega, make sense.

The October rumour comes from two forum posts from 3DCenter. AMD itself says Vega is 2017.

Hearing about the cooler being efficient and premium like makes me wonder if u should just order one on launch as much as I want an AIB model. But we don't know when those will come.

Wait and see how they handle in the reviews before deciding obviously. If they really are cool and quiet, I could care less about looks, might pick up one.

Die sizes don't tell the whole story.

The 980 is 75% bigger than the 960 but closer to 85% faster at 1440p. (the Msi gaming 980 would be ~92% faster according to TPU)

The 390x is 22% bigger than the 380x but the 390x is 50% faster than the 380x at 1440p.

Note that these are all non-OC results. The xtreme gaming 980ti is not even a full chip, and is ~57% better than the 980, while being ~50% bigger.

Either way, chip sizes just don't tell the complete story.

Does Kyle at hardocp have to wait until the 24th to start crying about not getting one?

With the supposed larger availability, it will be interesting to see if any of the more biased sites/reviewers are left out.

I just realized how genius the release date is. Final episode of Game of Thrones S6 on the 26th, nothing to look forward to for awhile... except release of Polaris!

It comes down to how good the memory compression on Polaris is though as the 390X has a 512-bit memory bus and Polaris only has a 256-bit memory bus. It doesn't matter how much processing power a card has if you can't feed it data quick enough.

If the 480 doesn't quite have the same performance numbers as the 390X then the likely bottleneck is the memory. Eventually we'll probably see versions of the card using GDDR5X which should alleviate that problem if it exists.

I don't really get all these claims of the hype being in overdrive.

Right now the rumours seem to be solidifying around 390X performance at stock, 110W power usage in games and decent overclocking (20-25% to 1500-1600 MHz from 1266 MHz stock).

All of this is about as modest as you can get. With 2304 and a 1266 MHz clock (5.833 TFLOPS) and zero architectural improvements, performance should be equal to a 390X (2816 shaders at 1050 MHz, 5.913 TFLOPS). 110W power usage puts it at about 90% the efficiency of GP104 (RX 480 would have 60% the performance of GP104, with 66% of the power usage). 20-25% overclocking is decent but not amazing (certainly not GM200 level, which could do 30-35%).

Tbh, I don't think your expectations are unreasonable, but the most recent China leaks are actually placing it as Mr. Glory says at somewhat above 390 / gtx 970 levels, that is to say there might be ipc losses vs Hawaii or minimal gains. This could be possible due to a limited memory bus as well as a renewed focus on performance / watt.

I have no idea where it falls out, and those leaks could well be wrong, but I think the nano / fury @ stock expectations (which I got excited about) are wrong. If it were at those levels, then you would definitely be looking at a disruptive card because it would genuinely oc to near gtx 1070 levels and gtx 1060ti would be doa.

Still a good product and amd looks like a great long term story. I'll be picking one up for sure.

Yes , GTX 970 Is cheaper than RX480 because :

1) doesn't have Hardware Async compute
2) doesn't have Display 1.3 and HDMI 2.0 b
3) doesn't have great Perf/w like RX 480.
4) doesn't have great DX12 performance like RX480
5) doesn't have 8GB Vram
6) doesn't have some Tier for DX12 like RX 480
