It makes sense that the card crashes with any attempt at overclocking on the wrong drivers. Any overclocking info on the non-Polaris driver is pretty worthless.

They used the official review driver. :thumbsup:

damn, these driver instability rumors really make me wanna buy nVidia

seems like AMD have messed up again

Are you serious? You can buy what you want to, but there's a driver crash at some event and you think that's the end all be all? The definitive reason for purchasing one or the other?

It's not an isolated event, there have been a lot of driver instability rumors

and yes, I really really don't want my drivers to be unstable for a couple of months after I buy the card. in fact it's probably the #1 priority

I had a HD 7850, non OCed and it took a couple of months for the drivers to be sort of stable. I don't want to go through that again

If you think there's an issue buy what makes you feel comfortable. I must be the lucky one who rarely has driver crashes/bugs with either brand. I know some people seem to have many issues though.

I had to wait months for my Optimus Kepler drivers to become stable under Win 10 after the OS launched. It also took months for Intel to fix a driver problem that forced me to disable hardware acceleration in browser. (system unstable while decoding h.264)

If you're still expecting to be free of this kind of problems with any vendor, be it AMD, Nvidia, or Intel, you're in for a nasty surprise.

If there is one thing in the world I wish I could murder permanently, it's the "AMD DRIVERS ARE UNSTABLE AND NVIDIA'S ARE PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!!" circlejerk.

yeah, I never said that

just pointing out that a lot of people saying the release drivers are unstable isn't a good thing

I haven't heard a single rumor about driver instability outside of that one video. You jumped to a ridiculous conclusion. How does anyone expect AMD to compete with Nvidia if you all live in this fantasy world where AMD can't possibly produce a decent driver?

Gotta wait for reviews obviously, but I'm wondering if we're all going to be saying the same thing we said when the R9 290/290X launched, that AMD should have made aftermarket coolers available from the get go.

I don't see why when nvidia is charging an extra $100 for a reference cooler. And it's not a good one at that. That's half of what a 480 Is going to cost just in early adopter fees. If amd gives us a 480 for $200 I'll cut them some slack on not having a great reference cooler.

Legit 3dMark FireStrike, live demo. With review drivers for RX 480.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLUQ9G7wrEw

23,806 Graphics Score in Cross-Fire.

CPU is an FX one. Whether that affect the score or not, I don't know.

This video is now marked private, but I was able to watch most of it before that happened.

These don't seem like the most professional reviewers. I couldn't understand the language, but there was a lot of fumbling around and it doesn't look like this "presentation" was rehearsed at all.

The video notes indicate that both 4GB and 8GB versions were tested (can't get the exact wording now that it's private). Does that mean they set them up in CrossFire where one card was 4GB and the other was 8GB? Is that even a supported configuration?

AMD needs to have rock-stable drivers on Day 1. Bad launch drivers have caused too many problems in the past, and as the saying goes, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Even if they're fixed afterward, the stigma will remain. That said, as noted above, I don't give much stock to this particular YouTube video. If we see driver crashes observed by reputable sites on launch day, that is cause for serious concern.

Normally AMD has rock stable drivers at launch, its not like Nvidia does it leaving sli users out of a functional driver for a whole year.

1070 is ~ 2X faster than the 280X/7970Ghz.
-> $420 / 100% increase in performance = $4.20 per 1% increase upgrade

RX 480 ~ 390X is 49% faster than 280X/7970Ghz.
-> $240 / 49% increase = $4.90 per each 1% increase

If you look at it like that, 1070 is a better upgrade for you if the intention is to keep the card for 3-4 years and esp. if you want to upgrade to 1440p this year. Vega may not be out until late Q1 2017..

Good Lord of FUD, WTF did I just read?
VASTLY (twice, Karl, TWICE!!!) superior perf/$ card is somehow... worse value?

Jeez.

If you are comparing "increase", compare it to price increase too .
7970 is what, 100$-ish today? (probably more, but let's be generous).

480 => costs 100$ to upgrade, 49% increase, about 2$ per 1%.
1070 => costs 300 to upgrade, 100% increas, about 3$ per 1%.
