I've used a non-X R9 390 for a short period on a weaker CPU than user gasolina, and I had better scores on the same benchmark with stock clocks. Overclocking would bring the card to R9 390X level. There are suggestions that the RX480 might indeed only have 32 ROPs, I wonder if this is having an effect? The rendering resolution target with the HTC Vive is 3024x1680 pixels (1.4x higher on both dimensions than the actual overall display resolution).

According to AMD itself stock Radeon R9 390X scores 7.8 @ SteamVR. Radeon RX 480 OCed to 1315/2150 MHz barely matches stock Radeon R9 390 in this benchmark.

A guy on TPU Forums received an RX480 in advance and while it does seem to perform well in Batman Arkham Knight (390X level, at least at 1080p), it doesn't seem to exactly have thrilling VR performance. Check out the posts on the last few pages by user gasolina:

RX 480's VR capabilities seem to be vastly inferior to the 2 year old mainstream GTX 970 card.

That's kind of sad for a card marketed for its VR performance.

For giggles, I ran the test and got 8.9, but that was at 1500MHz.

I wonder how long I'll have to wait for a custom model with a DVI-D?

I won't be able to OC my monitor with an adapter though I'll have to wait for a custom model with a DVI-D port.

I am sure they will. The Reference card needs the extra cooling vents due to the blower. So adding a DVI port would take up half of that backside vent. But wont be an issue with an open air cooler.

Wow, let me get this straight - does he have an AIB card with a custom cooler?

What a dog of a GPU if that's the case.

Nobody has AIB cards, everything you see in these rumors are reference cards, including the card Gasolina has.

But why would this make it a dog?

Why do you never provide sources?

Valve VR "Benchmark" will dramatically change based on frame rate.

From Reddit:

http://imgur.com/a/aRBdT

Can easily go from 6.3 -> 7.2 by changing clocks

What is that other image supposed to show? Furmark? Gaming? Huge difference.

So many people seem to want to judge this GPU as if it was a $400-$500 card.....it starts at $199!! There will be a RX 490 and a Fury successor released down the road...this is the new mid range/budget card (280X/380X).

For those who care and got scared by the FUD compaing:
The rest of the display goes like this (random GPU)

Well from what I've read around the internet, the RX 480 performance is similar to in between a 390 and 390X, I guess when it comes out we'll see by actual users.

Ya, so was HD5770 to HD4870/4890 but it doesn't mean HD5750/5770 replaced HD4870/4890 as their spiritualistic successors. You wouldn't say that GTX750Ti was a GTX480/570 successor even though they performed similarly and there was exactly a generation jump and a full node jump between them.

R9 390X $429 videocard
R9 390 $329 videocard

How do you replace a $329-429 last generation videocards with a new $199-229 videocard? It doesn't work like that. AMD/ATI/NV never do this. As Silverforce11 outlined earlier in the thread and it continues to be ignored, AMD/NV/ATI bring last gen's tier performance to lower price levels.

We've seen this before many times. The comparisons being made now are so horribly misconstrued, it's hurting the brain.

Literally, people are being 100% ignorant of GPU history and lineage. On one hand PC gamers defend/dney that NV is selling upper mid-range cards for flagship prices, but on the other hand they try to shove low end/mainstream AMD parts into the upper mid-range segment.

There are so many examples of this happening in GPU history, it's shocking how some are trying to portray that RX 480 is an R9 390/390X replacement.

HD5850/5870 were NOT replaced by HD6850/6870.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/3987/amds-radeon-6870-6850-renewing-competition-in-the-midrange-market

AMD launched HD6850/6870 first. The Irony:

"AMD is launching its new mainstream performance lineup, the Radeon HD 6800 series. The 6800 cards will offer much more performance at the $179 to $239 price range. We compare the new Radeon HD 6870 and Radeon HD 6850 with AMD and NVIDIA cards and find out which delivers the best gameplay experience and value. The 6800 series we are seeing here today will be the new "mid-level" GPU series. Later this year we will see a 6900 series of GPUs that will represent the high end or enthusiast level cards. Seeing the 5700 series stay intact is somewhat of a testament to the ability of the GPUs."
http://www.hardocp.com/article/2010/10/21/amd_radeon_hd_6870_6850_video_card_review#.V3GE8esrKHt

I mean literally AMD is launching RX 470 for $149-179 and RX 480 for $199-229.

I am 100% convinced the NV PR/marketing shills are working overtime trying to flat out change history and position Polaris 10 as an R9 390/390X replacement. AMD has made it clear from day 1 that Polaris 10 and 11 are mainstream product lines, exactly like HD6850/6870 and HD7850 were. Vega 10 and Vega 11 will be high/ultra high-end replacement. I don't know how many times this needs to be repeated.

So many people seem to want to judge this GPU as if it was a $400-$500 card.....it starts at $199!! There will be a RX 490 and a Fury successor released down the road...this is the new mid range/budget card (280X/380X).

Don't state the obvious Merc. This is their argument.

Imagine if GTX470/480 were delayed into the future (aka AMD publicaly said we are launching high-end Vega 10 and 11 in the future!).

Now imagine NV launches their Fermi GTX460 card first instead, but because it barely outperformed GTX275/280, we would then claim that it failed to reach engineering expectations and NV was forced to price it at $199-229?!

you guys noticed the one two punch? one invariably follows the other a fud post shows up, then another post reinforces it

why are they so eager? when real benchmarks are just 2 days away.

if they are so confident as to post screen caps, why not source it?

Because this is about trying to get as many folks as possible to BELIEVE their lies BEFORE 480 is released, so that as many as possible will BUY NVIDIA cards BEFORE 480 launches.

ONCE 480 releases, the truth of 480's performance/stock/OC-ability/etc will be known, and this fud and its associated lies evident to all.

Couple this with (this rumor) :

https://semiaccurate.com/2016/06/24/serious-manufacturing-problem-hits-nvidia-consumer-gpus/

And this makes it imperative (from nVidia's perpective) to get folks to purchase as many nVidia cards as possible BEFORE the 480 Release, and BEFORE these rumored supply issues--IF TRUE--become visible and known to the GPU buying masses. Taken together, this would also explain why nVidia pulled forward (by ~1.5 to 2 MONTHS) the 1070/1080 "launch" and the (pure cash grab) of the Founders Edition pricing as well.

If 480/470/460 cards perform and OC well and stock is plentiful, and the rumored (nVidia) supply issues play out, AMD will gain significant market share, and thus nVidia's income stream and market share will suffer.

Seems like it's exactly 390X performance, which is pretty good. If the prices get super inflated I think people will be kinda disappointed.

A display port to dvi adapter is included with the card I think.
HDMI to DVI is a trivial conversion.

Anyone know if a Dual-link DVI adapter is included? This is the one that's expensive.

Also, can HDMI 2 convert to Dual-link DVI with a simple passive adapter? The bandwidth is present in this case.
