At $199, it could be @ R9 390 performance and still be a hit. The pricing is just too good to fail. However, from a technical standpoint, I would be rather disappointed. From a 232mm sized die, I expect greater than R9 390X performance @ stock clocks.

Since you chose a 1440P graph, I am going to say 62%. This is not a 1440P card, it has 32 ROPs after all, the 390X has 64. These become more important at higher resolutions.

But at 1080P, I expect it to be slightly above a 390X.

For sure, there is the usual hype/anti-hype that goes with every release. After cards release people have to buy something and 480 looks like it will be the best value at $200-250 range. Curious how pc builders will market it (ie. college gaming pc or htpc for $600-750).

69-70%. And this is from pessimistic me so I'm shocked to see others post lower. 290X is at 68%, and I'd love to hear the reasons why it should not be faster since it has more TFLOPs. Afterall, 32 ROP defenders love to link the anandtech pixel fillrate test where a Tonga beats Hawaii, so why is that an excuse? They should have improved in the nearly 2 years since then even more. A 290X also only has a 25% bandwidth advantage, and again we have 2 generations of "compression" since Hawaii.

Either way, iiankiii is right and it _should_ be faster than a 390X. But I'm not holding my breath.

There's no such thing, you can see the same IPC regression from Maxwell to Pascal. There are obviously things that'll make the 480 better than 390x but the full effect will not be felt till the latest gen consoles, based on Polaris, are released & then DX12 games that make use of them, come to the fore.

Talking about reviews, I'm curious to know your last minute expectations. Let's use TPU's 1440p chart as reference. Where do you think stock Radeon RX 480 will end up?

73%

Might be lower, might be higher, not long to go now.

I'll say 70%, with the possible range from 65(slightly worse than 390) to 75 (slightly better than 390X), anything outside that would be a real surprice.

Should be a good deal when you consider that it is 51% of the price (229/449).

70% stock. Overclock 75%

I'm hoping AIB cards will be in the 80% range.

Like I've said, just with the same clocks but max power target you almost get 390X GTX 980 performance.

The reference card is good, if your not a power user. If you are you will have much more fun and more performance.
249$ for custom card that equals or beats 980 its very interesting.

Staying with my prediction between stock 980 and 390x, which would be 72% i guess, even at 1440p.

As long it does not fells below the R9 390 its more than fine, but with the cutdowns at memory and rops, there could be high variations game to game.

That's my guess as well. 390 as a baseline for DX11 games. 390x/980 and above for DX12 games. It will also probably be very dependent on where in the game that it's benched.

I've been without a card since the middle of May after UPS decided to go 'Hulk smash' on my 390, and I've just now gotten the damage claim money. The urge to buy a reference 480 immediately is overwhelming, but I'd prefer a custom one. Any suggestions? Should I snatch one up if reviews say the custom cooler is decent, or suck it up and put off playing TW3: Blood and Wine even longer?

Ok so no actual source of throttling while gaming then, when multiple leakers have had no throttling issues. Just what you think because you've seen a picture of the card and a screenshot from furmark. Gotcha.

Can you provide links to these multiple leakers and their analysis? Thanks!

There are hundreds of posts in here by leakers with no mention of throttling when gaming. Funny I asked you to provide any proof of 1080 FE not throttling while gaming in real world usage months ago and you've yet to produce those...

Do you have any proof that the 480 is throttling while gaming? I provided proof of that in real world released 1080s when asked.

You never provided any of your proof though... funny

Will be curious to see how relative performance scales with resolution this time, considering AMD used to close the gap at 1440p and 4K with Hawaii/Fiji.

I read that as a no.

You didn't show any sign of throttling, so nothing to disprove here.

But I never claimed they were throttling, I'm just asking where are these multiple leakers proving otherwise. This is the Polaris thread so people are genuinely interested in that.
