well a phenom ii x4 2.6 ghz would still be plenty fast and for $165 ish it would be great on my board that doesnt support the current AM2+ phenoms (sincethey are 125watt).


by the way , there is a coupon code for the phenom 2 at newegg for $15 off. so its actaully $180 and $220 there for the 920 and 940 right now.

We are like that because we want, nay need, the underdog to win or at least be able to compete if we want to ever improve our computer capabilities.

Why don't you put that stuff you were predicting in your sig like some of the other forum members do-- write the date and the prediction, ie "10/10/2006-- AMD dying, you need to short"

I know ya don't like me not many do. Hell the guys I use to work with hated my guts . The people I live around love me it took along time tho. I have not ever changed I am the same today as I was 50 years ago . Its not what ya say or how ya say it. It what you do that counts . Go that extra mile for people . Than they start thinking

If a man hires me to do a job . I work just as hard @ $1 hour as I do for $100 an hour . To me there is no differance none. I agreed to give the man an hour of My work . That doesn't change because of $$$.

Pride honor dignity. Things worth living for. The guys didn't like me. No biggie. They sugared My fuel tanks which did them no good . I was ready for it . Hell I never even let them know I new . They cut my tires . I fixed without uttering a word . I just plan ignored them . It drove them crazy. Company always paid for damages.

IMO Intel cut prices to move Q4 inventory build after posting 23% lower revenue than they expected. 23% less revenue means there's a lot of chips sitting somewhere that need to be moved into the channel, and the channel is lacking customers.

Let's hope the 'fight at price' is good for AMD against Intel as it has been against nVidia. Maybe their yields are high enough to sustain it.

I would love to believe Intel won't cut further. I can see AMD not making logical choices because there under the gun . But I just don't believe it...

We can go back and read other posters saying intel has to recovery their investments in Fabs, AMD had the same problem . Many believe AMD removed that burden by going fabless. I think AMD screwed the pooch going fabless. If AMD starts makingMoney which we all desire. IF AMD makes $$ but the FAB loses. THE LAW will be all over the new Fab company . If both lose . Normal If AMD looses but Fab gains . Thats OK. If the AMD gains but Fab loses . All kinds of flags will go up.

When does AMD INTEL anti trust case come to trail? The EU is going after Intel big time. But its really sad because the US is watching the EU money trolls closely.

IIntel asked the EU for specifics. EU refuses to give dates or specifics. Intels not stupid . We all know AMD was fab constrained.

Maybe for AMD shareholders it should be refered to as 'reverse equity' or something.

Unfortunately, AMD remains a full step behind Intel. Performance doesn't bother me as much as the fact that Intel is already 1.5 generations into 45nm and putting the final touches on their 32nm lines. At the same time as AMD is just launching their first 45nm chips. It's really too bad AMD cannot "skip ahead" past 32nm and go directly to 22nm.

I here this allthe time. Iuse to agree . Idon't care knows this stuff I don't . But the way I read it . AMDs 45nm process is designed to go right to 32nm . So they may catch intel napping . Plus the new fab company owners can push up 32 development. Who knows . But the exact same applies to Intel from 32 to 22nm.

Other way around, Intel greased the skids to transition from 45nm to 32nm by adopting HK/MG at 45nm.

AMD's got a LOT of work to do in the production environment with HK/MG just to get up the learning curve that Intel has alreday climbed. I'm talking device reliability and characterization, mastering new yield loss mechanisms that simply don't exist on traditional SiON/poly-Si gate stacks, etc.

AMD's plus is that they have put immersion litho into production before Intel. This will be one less hassle for AMD as they transition to 32nm but there is absolutely no comparing the technical difficulties and differences between implementing a robust HK/MG integration scheme and implementing a turn-key supplier provided piece if equipment (ASML will sell the immersion litho equipment to anyone, AMD does not own the technology).

I'm looking forward to sub-$200 PhII quad-core upgrades for my AM2+ board (K9A2 Platinum). Unfortunately, I think that I have v1 of that board, which I think has a 95W limit on CPU TDP, which means I cannot drop in one of the new PhII chips today.

Hopefully, since they have a beta BIOS that supports the AM2+ PhII chips, that they will have another BETA (and eventually production) BIOS to support the AM3 PhII chips (lower TDP?), in that board as well.

I don't need extra CPU power in that machine, but it would be nice for a little extra DC power, since I'm going to run the box anyways doing WHS and F@H on three (possibly four) GPUs.

Make the two companies, AMD and TFC. AMD dies if TFC dies before 22nm.

Post 22nm AMD could survive by migrating to TSMC for high-performance MPU technology as SUN is doing at 45nm.

I thought that AMD was going fabless though? (IE they are not building any more new fabs in the near future). I feel so out of the loop.

It will be interesting to see how this price war pans out. Hopefully it doesn't end with AMD being out.

AMD may not be making bank on $200 Phenom IIs, but at least they can still move chips at that price. They have to protect what little market share they have left. I believe it is their intention to sell not only processors but platforms; namely, if they can sell someone on a Phenom II system, they stand a better chance of selling them AMD video cards, especially if, at some point in the future, they roll out HTX-based video cards or Fusion-based products. Admittedly, Fusion has been delayed, but still . . .
