Even for a desktop 2x SATA ports are enough for the vast majority of users. This will make OEM Slim PCs save a few bucks from the motherboard and enable a cheaper SSF system.
And if you want more HDDs storage, an external 2.5" USB3.1 HDD or even SSD (2TBs price starting to fall) will be more than enough again for the vast majority of users.

I see you changed your views to more sensible

Nah, southbridge is pin-limited on any reasonably modern process- as in, they can't shrink it any further, as they need enough physical space for all the pins.

Didn't knew about this pin compatibility problem. Anyway, this makes the things much easier for design Zen APUs.

Not for me! 1x DVD/BR, 1x SSD for Windows, 1x SSD for Linux, 1x HDD for shared data storage... I still think that the "sweet spot" for SATA port count is four.

People couldn't get enough SATA ports on regular systems before

OEM systems are not the same as DIY. OEMs will be extremely happy with only 2x SATA ports on the SoC but most DIY users will not.

So SFF/AIO OEM systems are like Laptops, 2x SATA ports are fine. For the rest of the market you need more and thus the reason for the extra Chipset.

Also, it is entirely a different thing to compare a motherboard with only 2x SATA ports vs a competitor with 4x SATA at the same price and try to convince anyone that most people will only use 2x ports. In that instance its about the features of the product and not if most people will be fine with less. Not to mention that everyone would buy the board that had more features (same price) no matter if they would use them all.

An AMD SATA port can support several devices, eventualy only the OS SSD would need a reserved port, other items can be connected in the remaining port.

But then they would need a port-multiplier card.

No, only an adequate cable, each device will have its own ID like in the old faithfull PATAs, besides Kabinis have 6GB/s SATA ports, this is enough to connect say a burner and a data HDD in the second port.

We've been over this before... you're seriously mis-informed.

Edit: Link me one of these hypothetical cables. I did a search for "SATA multi-device cables", and couldn't find anything interesting.

Yes, but you're not the majority of PC users One hard drive/SSD and possibly an optical drive is sufficient for most people.

with the way girls take 37 photos with each visit to the bathroom mirror there is no way 1 SSD is sufficient. 1 SSD, 1 spinning rust, 1 optical drive, if i had to drop one it would be the optical drive.

in almost every install of windows i do i use a build script to move /users/ to the spinning rust drive.
