First benchmarks are up for AMD's new Radeon 6990. Crazy fast.

From their pricing for China, the card is 5000 Yuan which in a straight up translation is $750 US. The card is likely to come in at newegg for $650-$700.

The 6990 comes at 830/880 core clock, 4GB of VRAM at 5000Mhz. I am assuming without translating, the BIOS switch swaps you from 830 to 880.

They were able to easily overclock the card to 930MhZ on the core.

Pretty much the same as 6970 CF. A little bump to the memory clocks would likely put things at parity.

Its actually not bad from a value standpoint. Costs the same as 2 6970s.

The power consumption numbers are interesting to look at.

Stock, the card draws less power than a 5970, with the "AUSUM" BIOS the card is far, far more power hungry than anything else.

very promising.
now i would like to see the numbers for two of these things running in crossfire (quad gpu).

Edit: any estimates on how long it will take before a company like Asus throws a different cooler on this thing (like the Direct CU ii)?

as said before we really need to see quadfire scalling -- that's the only thing that might make these cards attractive to me.

Nice. Would be great to see some leaks for 590 as well just to see how that stacks up.

AMD claims in their slides they have improved quad scaling to near 100% using two 6990s. Will have to wait for official reviews to come in.

Those are some impressive 2560x resolution scores!

Now lets see nvidias 600+ watt TPD 590
Im assumeing it ll have one hellva big cooler.

Thats what I gathered from that chinese site too...it might just be PCI certified as long as you dont push that AUSUM button that takes you waaay waaaay over the 300watt limit.

Kinda hard to trust google translate though, so waiting to see what Anandtech says about it.

If it were, I'd totally buy one and see if I can get a tax write-off by claiming it's a heater.

Spectacular performance if true.

Nothing is official obviously but it's expected to lift tonight, yes.

Manufacturers will have pre-overclocked cards upon release with non reference designs.
Just a heads up for you guys.

Edit: This card will be faster then a gtx590 unless the gtx590 is 2 gtx580 cores. Good job AMD!

sweet! i won't lose any performance going from my 6970 CF to a 6990. i always liked the dual gpu variants of these types of cards. they're always a lot quieter.

6990 DirectCU II... If so i'll definitely order

definitely

i am actually going to hold off on purchasing one of these until something like DirectCU II is available. I cannot stand how much noise the reference fans produce. Modified cooling solutions provide lower heat, lower noise, and better overclocking.

Even then it might be faster... depends on how much underclocked the 580's are that are used for the 590.

And how much watt nvidia thinks is okay without going overboard, how big the coolers they make for them are ect ect.

Im pretty sure the Nvidia 590 will be more expensive though (if it needs much better coolers ect because of power usage/heat)... not sure if it ll be faster.

*IF* you play with 3 monitors....

5760x1080 resolutions, the 6970s are faster cards than the 580s in SLI.

How? The card scales almost identically to 6970 CF, but this is a single card solution. In Crysis, BF:BC2, and Metro 2033 the performance is 64% faster over a single 580. The cheapest 580 I see is $470 on Newegg. If this card will debut at $750, then it would be 60% more expensive for a similar performance increase in the most demanding games. Looks reasonable to me. The price may be even lower though.

I agree, and one more point is sli/crossfire scaling and drivers, thats gonna play a big role in this battle.

Exactly my point. Rather a pair of 1Ghz core 6970's then a single card IMO
