AMD is a good company with a bad current lineup. At least they dotn lock out features or reserve them for the 1500$+ CPU's like crippletel does. They charge an extra 100$ for a "feature" that they have to go in and lock out, it actually takes them more effort to make the cheaper product. THATS how greedy and awful intel is. Their only 6 core processors are 600 & 1100$, AMD had a consumer level 6 core processor last generation and it was comparable to intels I7 lineup, their current one isnt. Theyre not bad, just not as good as intels chips. but at least AMD isnt a greedy big organization like crippletel.

AMD doesn't lock out features because they need those features in order to remain remotely competitive. They inflated prices on their top processors themselves back when they held the performance crown. I assure you that AMD would raise prices if it could keep selling processors at that price, but the way things are consumers would just laugh at AMD and buy better performing Intel processors. Even at current prices a lot of people laugh at AMD and buy better performing Intel processors.

And yes...Intel is greedy. They're a company that wants to make a profit. This is not an inherently bad or evil thing.

It simply makes no Business sense for AMD to try and compete for the Performance crown on the Desktop anymore. The Desktop Market is stagnating and growth is elsewhere, it is here where AMD is ahead of Intel in key areas it can compete. These other Markets are also growth markets.

Just wait until K8L launches. It has native quad core and REVERSE HYPERTHREADING! Yeah that's right, 4 cores act like one huge core that's 4x as powerful. AMD is intentionally letting Intel get a false sense of security, so it hurts extra bad when the mighty K8L delivers its crushing blow.

I want to believe.

....it's called super-threading
well... not quite the same way you said, but interesting

I'll bite on this one.

I picked up my 6 core 970 for $400.

Secondly amd 6 core processors were and still is not a challenge for gulftown.

It was only comparable to i7 quads on threaded apps.

And when you are on top you charge what the market will pay. AMD did the same thing when the FX processors first came out in the 939 days!

Interesting link but that's not really what I was referring to.

I was just poking fun at the amazing amount of faith some people have (had?) in AMD. Once Core 2 came out, AMD fans immediately began hyping the mythical AMD K8L that would regain the performance crown for AMD. They complained that it was unfair to compare Core 2 to Athlon 64 because it was comparing a previous-gen CPU to a current-gen one (nevermind that socket AM2 JUST came out and for all intents and purposes was AMD's answer to Core 2).

K8L was going to be native quad-core, unlike Core 2 Quad which was just two dual-cores in the same package. And rumor sites like The Inquirer started rumoring about "reverse hypterthreading", which would be AMD's biggest weapon against Core 2. At that time, quad core didn't offer much advantage over dual, so reverse-hyperthreading would allow K8L to put those extra cores to use by creating one large super core.

Of course, K8L never even existed. AMD's actual next-gen architecture didn't come out until nearly a year and a half after Core 2. . . and its performance was not up to par, not to mention the infamous TLB bug. Reverse-hyperthreading was also purely fictional. The concept was debunked by Jon Stokes at Ars Technica, but that didn't stop the AMD fanboys from bringing it up in every flame war.

I like AMD, but it's kind of pathetic to see the hardcore AMD fans these days. They always believe that AMD's next CPU will finally be the one that takes the performance crown back from Intel. It's been that way since 2006.
