I almost wonder if OEMs are delaying RR's release due to DRAM prices.. and AMD has no choice but to go with it.
Right now amd product into that market is a powerhungry failed server cpu on stoneage process.
They claim to get a new product that is 40 to 50% faster while using half the power. Its insane.
I havnt seen such a difference like ...ever. or at least for 30 years.
Dram price makes no difference vs that.
But i guess gpu group work day and night to get that fast path to work properly on ddr4.

You are going with their claims even when nothing hints to Riven Ridge for this year. Not even a showcase from pre-sale units in a recent tech event like IFA.

HP ENVY x360 15-bq101na
Specifications

Operating System
Windows 10 Home 64
Processor
AMD Ryzen™ 5 2500U Quad-Core (2 GHz base frequency, up to 3.6 GHz burst
frequency, 6 MB cache)

Edit : IIRC HP got the exclusivity for two months for previous newly launched AMD mobile APUs...

Not just a nice find, but also a disappointing one. On the third page of the PDF, it lists the memory as being 1 X 8GB SODIMM at DDR4-2400. So, it's single channel with the resulting crippled/handicapped performance. And this is possibly exclusive for the first two months of availability? Way to tarnish the brand right off the bat...

It says right on the first page up to 16GB of RAM, I imagine that would be two SODIMMs, and since it's one CCX it won't get quite the same boost from RAM frequency as the desktop models. Maybe not as gimped as imagined?

The dog is on track and coming!

Bahahah oh dear.

I feel sorry for the dog though.

The RAM speed is for the iGPU, not the CPU. It needs DDR4-3200 minimum, or else all the advances in the world will do nothing to set the Raven Ridge iGPU apart from Bristol Ridge. CPU performance enhanced? Yes. Power usage reduced? Yes. Faster graphics? No, not really. Except to the extent that the old XV modules held back Carrizo.

Personally, I don't find 1x8 GB a big deal. Every low-end laptop comes with 1x8 GB. I'll just add my own.

What is exclusive is not this laptop but HP being the only one to use the APU for their whole laptop line, this HP will have score of sold laptops before the competition will start receiving the chips, i guess that they they take all the volume of the first batches at a premium price...

Except Bristol has Fiji era memory bandwidth requirements. Raven has Vega based graphics, meaning the benefits of improved memory compression, larger caches, DSBR and primitive shaders (both save bandwidth), etc'.

Even at the same bandwidth, Raven should have a significant performance uplift over Bristol. How much exactly is TBD.

I guess we'll find out how much better Raven Ridge is at DDR4-2400 than Carrizo in short order. Sadly.

Or maybe full fat 8c/16t? That would be interesting....

Yes only in your dreams, 8/16 Raven Ridge APU with 2000 VEGA GCN GPU cores.

If you need "Mobile 8/16 CPU", well Asus has a very good gaming tool for your needs.

65 watt cpu laptop...price, battery life, does it throttle, etc.?

It has to be AM4, right, or is there a mobile socket for Ryzen 7 I don't know about?

Its AM4, but the dGPU (RX580) is a mobile design.

Pretty amazing in that it has 154W worth of processosing in the form of a CPU (65W) and dGPU (est. 89W).

Yeah, I'm not sure how they are going to fit the battery in there:

How about an external battery pack to recharge and supplement the main battery?

Speaking of external battery packs, I'll take one for a 35W Raven Ridge as well.

I think if you look at Hawaii vs Fiji vs Vega 56 i think it looks pretty good. Carrizo is ~Hawaii level of GCN, vega 56 with only 26gb/s more bandwidth ( 384 vs 410) is significantly faster .

edit: actually finishing my thought...lol

Carrizo is actually Tonga based, which is Fiji like.

I liken you guys to people who want high performance on a budget without understanding the APU market. It would be nice if they make the APU memory speed dependent.

Regarding the leaked HP Envy x360 notebook specifications — single-channel has lower power. AMD's APUs already beat Intel in graphics performance, so single-channel saves energy to better compete on battery life. By the way, corresponding Intel models in the x360 range also come with single-channel memory.

That said, hopefully the linked model will be upgradeable to dual-channel for those who want the full graphics performance.

Nice. I had high hopes for RR APU and it looks like it will not disappoint. RR APU raises the bar for integrated graphics at affordable prices. I think AMD has a good product for entry level gaming. Nvidia will have to sell higher perf SKUs for notebooks as GT 1030 is made irrelevant given we get slightly lower perf but at far lower power consumption and superior battery life. I am looking forward to AMD's 7nm APUs with HBM in 2020 when AMD's vision 25x20 and Fusion will finally come true.
