AMD to invoke the power of 7 with a rumored 7/7 launch for Navi GPUs

AMD is ready to take a proper swing at NVIDIA with its upcoming next-gen Navi GPUs, which were reportedly launching in July with the first rumors and then the new 'it's launching in October' rumor surfaced that seems to be squashed with yet another rumor.

The latest on Navi is that it will launch on July 7 which would see AMD using as many 7s as it can to launch Navi, with Navi coming on 7nm (one) and then the rumored 7/7 launch (two, three). If AMD launches a mid-range 'Navi 7' GPU there could be four 7s which would be quite the trick from AMD. The mid-range Navi GPUs will compete with NVIDIA's soon-to-be-released GeForce GTX 1160 Ti graphics card, and whatever other GTX 16 series cards that I'm sure will launch in the coming months.

It looks like AMD will launch its new Navi range of graphics cards during Computex 2019 alongside the second-gen Zen 2 architecture and Ryzen 3000 series of CPUs. It will be a big event for Team Red as they'll have a bunch of new products to launch that will have consumers and gamers alike excited.

If they can bring Navi forward to early Q3 then great. I'd hate to see them delay Zen2 though. That would be pointless, and stupid. Plus I wanna buy one so hurry up AMD!!!

But anyway, a replacement for Polaris that can match or beat Vega56 would be a good addition to the market.

Weird scores. Check this out:

https://gfxbench.com/compare.jsp?benchmark=gfx50&did1=57711078&os1=Windows&api1=dx&hwtype1=dGPU&hwname1=AMD+Radeon+Pro+Vega+64&D2=AMD+66AF:F1

AMD 66AF:F1 is terrible onscreen in 1080P but better onscreen in 1440P? Something's fishy.

edit: here's a better comparison:

https://gfxbench.com/compare.jsp?benchmark=gfx50&did1=53396901&os1=Windows&api1=dx&hwtype1=dGPU&hwname1=AMD+Radeon+RX+Vega&D2=AMD+66AF:F1

The RX Vega 64 numbers are more legit here (high onscreen render #s for 1080p though, wonder why). Whatever 66AF:F1 really is, I don't think it'll seriously challenge Vega64 at Polaris price levels . . .

66AF is Vega 20? https://devicehunt.com/view/type/pci/vendor/1002/device/66AF
https://pci-ids.ucw.cz/read/PC/1002/66af

Big Navi is suppose to be;

https://devicehunt.com/view/type/pci/vendor/1002/device/731F
https://pci-ids.ucw.cz/read/PC/1002/731f

Big Navi is generally a successor to Polaris.
36 CUs to 40 CUs
256-bit @ 8 GHz to 256-bit? @ ~16 GHz (128-bit at 18 GHz is also an option)
232 mm squared to sub-200 mm squared.

Polaris 30 => ~230 USD
Navi 10 => ~300 USD <== Increase of ASP, Reduction of BOM

Small Navi is aimed at replacing Baffins with a Vega M solution(#WO_Intel) that is actually pretty low cost for a HBM design.

Kind of seems like AMD is looking to make Navi a die shrink of Polaris with faster/cheaper memory, and I guess that's cool for midstreamers...

Also, Radeon VII doesn't offer that much more than my current card @ 1440p so looks like the power-hungry Vega is staying put for now; that's fine I suppose.

The price on Radeon VII is high enough that unless you seriously want to buy AMD, you should carefully consider the decision. That being said, the transition from my Vega FE to Radeon VII @ 1440p was a pretty big deal. I'm still not hitting 144 fps in everything all the time, but I am a lot closer. I'm easily getting 20-30 fps or more with max settings, and I'm using less power to get those results.

The real question is how Navi will stand up to Vega64. I'm guessing that it may fall a bit short. But we will see.

I'll probably just throw a full cover block on the 64 when the new Ryzen processors are released and then see if I can flash to the liquid BIOS. It does use a lot of power but as long as the performance is there I don't really care; I don't typically game for more than 1 or 2 hours at a time anyway. Also, if there was a cheaper version of the VII with half the memory I might consider that just to have the 7nm fab--because most of the games I play can't use all of the 8GB anyway. I suppose the 16GB could be useful for content creation but I don't do enough of that to warrant that large of a reserve.
