Running a Gigabyte X470 Gaming 7 Wifi and 16GB FlareX 3200MHz C14.

With the Spire I have tried every setting to get it to run at levels as found in the reviews, as in 4GHz all core clocks, but the cpu can not maintain 4GHz. Running Heaven or the FFXV benchmark ends up somewhere between 3925 and 4025MHz. I am currently using the forementioned BeQuiet cooler as I could no longer stand the Spire wining @ 3000rpm.
It isn't thermal throttling as it stays between 72 en 82 degrees C. As far as I know AMD garantuees 3,7GHz all core so it isn't faulty just a terrible example.

Wraith Spire? You have a 2700X or a 2700?

What's your ambient temp, what case, what case fans? Pics of your setup?

I meant Wraith Prism as I have a 2700X.

My setup has been in the open with around 20C ambient.

I am awaiting my Kraken X62 bracket from NZXT to properly cool it and eventually cool it with the custom loop that is now sitting on my 4790k setup. For now I am just learning to tweak it to get the most out of it.

Can anyone confirm or not that this board would support Ryzen 2 out of the box or not? It says it does for Raven Ridge so that would theoretically work for a 2700x as well right? Asrock x370

It would likely still need a BIOS update I suspect, the 2700x came out later than the Raven Ridge CPUs.

Crap, that's my gut feeling as well. I'll probably have to just spend the extra for the 470 since I don't want to wait for AMD to ship out a cpu to update it with.

Not that you trust me, but if you sent me the motherboard, and return shipping, I can update it for you.

Yes it will after a bios update. But wait, do you already have the board ? and you must already have a CPU ? You could do it yourself.

A few weeks?
They are saying Q3 for B450 boards so that's still a ways off. x470 ITX boards are May 1st, so it's either wait for those and spend more, or do the x370 and find a way to update the bios.

Mark - I have the case, CPU, ram, storage, and graphics already so I just need to decide on the board. I appreciate the offer, but after two way shipping I'll be close to an x470 anyways. It makes sense to just spend the extra few bucks and get the new chipset I think. Unfortunate that AMD couldn't of had the bios ready to go for manufacturers earlier.

I really like AsRock, since the days of the 775Dual-VSTA. My last few Intel boards were AsRock, but the only AM4 board last year that passed muster for me that I could get at launch was the Gigabyte AB350M Gaming 3. Which turned out fine with a 1700 and mild OC / undervolt.

Trying out an Asus X470 Pro right now, but might switch to the AsRock X470 Taichi after supply has smoothed out.

AsRock X470 Taichi seems to be sold out now here, and Asus CH 7 prices are surging. I think I will wait until availability and pricing get better.

The CPU compatibility list says 2700x works from a previous BIOS, not just the most recent one. Unfortunately that previous one is from March, not earlier, so the odds of that out of the box aren't terrible but not 100% either.

There's a possibility it will even work with the Jan 11 BIOS, which was the AGESA update that enabled Pinnacle Ridge on my Asus board. Not on the official list though.

Posted in strictly technical also, but have a few different comments for here.

2700X, everything on auto in BIOS for the CPU, Asus Prime X470-Pro 4008, Wraith Prism, Arctic Silver 5, CPUID HWMonitor 1.35, CPU-Z 1.84, Win 10 Pro 1709 updated, high perf power plan.

Am doing a prime95 small FFT test now on all cores, package power is at ~131W and cores at ~85W, temp 67*C, vcore jumps around 1.243 - 1.286, fan at ~2900 RPM.

Bus and multiplier move around in CPU-Z; 95.xx - 99.xx for bus and 38.5 - 39.25 multiplier.

Core clock is 3892 to 3919, so, above the 3.7 advertised.

Core voltages are 1.188 to 1.200.

Memory is The Stilts CL14 3200 settings at 1.35V, but I need to do a stress memory test to make sure it is stable.

I am going to try setting max multiplier to 39.75, 40.25, 40.50, 40.75, etc. and see how stability goes tonight.

That's seems like a decent sample.

I am also running Prime95 small FFT at around the same core speeds, I did have to tweak the cpu to get the same core clocks. But currently around 90minutes in gives the following Hwinfo stats:
https://imgur.com/a/rvTdYCM

It needs 0,15V more and the power meter at the wall records around 230 to 240W. I am not sure what is using the 80~90W to keep the system running, it's just 2 fans, Gigabyte X470 Gaming 7 Wifi, 2x8GB RAM and a 1080ti on a 850W Seasonic Focus+ Gold.

Interesting, are those manual settings?

Yes, manual settings.
On the Gigabyte you can set the precision boost overdrive to enabled and select a voltage overdrive scalar from 1 to 10. In my case 8x gave too much and all core mp was lower than using 7x, upping the base clock to 102MHz, gives me my core speeds. Doing it this way will still let the cpu use it's boosting algorithms.

edit: 2 hours and 15minutes in, still priming, looks promising for stability.

Yeah on their website it does say it supports Pinnacle Ridge, which of course it does with the right bios. It looks like that January 11th bios is the minimum one I'm looking for to have it at least boot out of the box. Do you think Newegg would know when their latest batch of boards was received? I'd assume any board shipped to them after that date would have that 1/11/18 bios.

No, it may be months before the MFG date and the arrival at newegg. Plan on the worst, and make sure you have a way to flash it IMO.

Edit: BTW, My 470 Taichi looks like it will not ship today (release date) so it looks like they never had any to release, and 5/15 is when mine MIGHT ship.

That stinks, it's like launch last year all over again. I kinda want to gripe to AMD about the board situation.

I took a different tack than others and have a X370 motherboard on the way for the 2700X I purchased (since reviewers have confirmed all the important improvements are on the CPU itself). Newegg is clearing out their Gigabyte X370 Gaming 5 (*not* the K5) for $99.99 after $20 rebate. I had an additional $20 credit with them from an order cancellation due to price mistake... so $79.99 AR for a board with the same power delivery and pretty much the same components (minus external clockgen) as a Gigabyte X370 Gaming K7 board is a steal. The IR3553 FETs should be more than adequate even for max OC.

Having extensive experience with the K7 board and Gigabyte's buggy BIOS I expect I should be able to get it flashed with my 1700 in socket and ready for the 2700X in no time flat. So I should be able to report on "drop-in" Ryzen 2700X performance on a X370 board soon enough.

I am just waiting, since I really want to see what the 470 offers.

And with 4 threadrippers, its not like I can't do anything I want, including DC. In fact I have 1/3rd of my fleet turned of due to hot weather.

Yes, thanks again for making me WANT ANOTHER. As I already have 4 and am broke at the moment due to that.....
Well, it had me pulling my hair out. If only I would've waited a little longer. I'm a little surprised it dropped that low - nobody else seems to be near that price, so it's not AMD dropping prices to clear out stock before the 2950X.

There s something that must be not working as it should be, the Gigabyte X470 Gaming 7 Wifi is the board that yielded the lower power usage in Hardware.fr Prime95 test.
