What happens if you run your rig in an open area with the case side panel off, no GPU load, CPU load only? Better yet, have a box fan blowing air directly at it? To rule out an airflow/heat trapping scenario...

The highest temperature I have seen on my 3900X is 79°C with a max per-CCX OC. Granted, this is with waterblock + 360mm radiator as well as a case with good airflow not in an enclosed area. But my ambient temps aren't exactly low at 79°F.

I currently have a 125W TDP old-school AMD 4-heatpipe cooler with copper base on there.

I just tried a manual OC with the F41b (AGESA 1.0.0.3AB) BIOS on my B450 AORUS PRO WIFI ATX.

CPU Freq. 4000
CPU Volt. 1350

In Ryzen Master, it shows 4000 Mhz, and 1.35V (locked).

Unfortunately, when I start all 12 threads of PrimeGrid in BOINC, in no short order, my temps hit 107C !!!! And rising!!!!

I guess it's possible the temp sensor is borked, but I'd lean towards the cooler your using.

Using Aida64 system stress tester with the stock cooler my 3600 @stock would hit 90c withing a minute or two. I aborted the testing. I don't plan on doing anything that stressful with my rig, but wasn't happy with the temps.

I upgraded my cooler to the Arctic Freezer 34 eSports Duo. Not the best, but the difference was night and day compared to the stock cooler.

Using the same stress test for comparison the temps were in the low 70's after the 1hr point.

Looks like stock behavior as far as the vcore goes. When it's heavily loaded it's more or less around what you see as average.

Just a quick update. all the parts arrived late yesterday, so the new build is assembled, and Win10 Pro is installed. That aorus master mobo showed up with the F3 BIOS installed, and since GB put out the F5G BIOS (AGESA 1.0.0.3AB) the other day, I updated to it first thing.

So far, so good. The BIOS and CPU-Z are listing that 3200CL16 4x16GB Vengeance LPX kit at the 16-18-18-38 timings (All I had to do, was just enable the XMP profile for it). I won't have a chance to really benchmark the new desktop until this weekend, after I've already
migrated all my work stuff over to it over the next 2 days. Anything in particular you want me to use? I've got AIDA64 (haven't installed it on the new box yet), and I could run the CPU bench in CPU-Z and I guess Cinebench (never used that before).

Once I get WS Pro 15.1 and my VMs moved over, I'll find out whether there's an issue on that front in regards to Linux VMs. :/

I found those low profile Ballistix kits. The only one I could find was listed on that AVAdirect site folks here link to, and it's DDR3.

I have been playing with my janky Hynix 16GB RAM, 1.4 volts, started at 3200 and IF 1600, been going up in 33 mhz increments and testing stability.

The memory controller is da real MVP of Zen2, lol.

For those of you running a manual fixed OC on a 3rd-Gen Ryzen CPU, what are your temps like?

My R5 3600 *IDLES* at 59-66C! With nothing more than a web browser, Skype (not in a call), Task Manager, HWMonitor, and Firefox. CPU load under 10%.

Yet, HWMonitor says Package Power 111W. Which should be within the 125W TDP that this heatsink handles.

WTF is going on? I'm starting to think, that for some of these CPUs, the temp sensor itself is BORKED. Like the problems with FM2. (It seems that AMD always has temp sensor problems, with new process nodes and designs?)

That's the only thing that I can think of.

My 2700 @ 4.0Ghz, 1.35V, takes more Package Power, up to 140W. It's on 240mm AIO WC (CM ML240L), and gets up to 85-88C on water.

So, it seems, that I should put this one on water too. But is it possible, due to my high idle temp readings, that something about the sensors are borked, and that I should consider the delta between idle and load, instead of the absolute value that Ryzen Master is telling me? IOW, I should be OK to let this particular CPU hit 117C in Ryzen Master?

Edit: Or does this have something to do with the thermal density of 7nm chips? Less power usage than 12nm, but still hotter?

Edit: Does anyone know how to detect PROCHOT in Ryzen Master? There's an option under settings to "Disable PROCHOT", but I want to know how to detect it.

This is mystifying, as, I have had no issues on the Asus Prime B350-Plus 1.0.0.2 and some janky Hynix RAM.

Did you Gammaxx 400 yet?

What PSU are you using?

Did you flash the board with a Zen or Zen+ chip?

I have done all my flashing with the 1700 and some locked 2400 memory.

Confirming that the LPX 3200 ram works fine through stress test with XMP set.

I'm now using a -0.075v offset which brought idle temps down a bit and limited boost to 4GHz across all 8 cores, but I'm not complaining about that. Cool, quiet, and stable are my goals. Performance is already there for my needs with this chip.

Be careful, offset removes default parameters for everything, the chip thinks it is in OC mode.

Some musing in the CB20 thread, I was testing in prime95, mostly memory and IF stuff, but, I noticed the chip really is temp dependent, board power delivery dependent, and workload dependent.

Right now I am max perf limited by the B350 board, but it is fun testing out stuff.

That is why manual OC is pointless and if you want the most out of these chips, get some GOOD air cooling / airflow on the board, and, I think you really do need an X570 to max the X processors out.

They (12+ phase boards) exist for a reason, despite the anger / cost around them

Been running 1080p bluray encodes on my 3700x. When reencoding TV shows in x265 at ~3000Kbps it's almost 50% faster than 2700 (non-X) it replaced. I'm getting 1.7x speed (or 44 frames per second). I'm hoping I can score a cheap/open box 3900X from Microcenter by the year's end to speed that up even more.

I've heard the gigabyte boards have terrible XMP profiles which is concerning since I ordered one. Anyone able to confirm? Guess a bios update would resolve it but that would be frustrating.

Still trying to get the time to setup the X570 system completely.

Yes, those latencies are only possible at 3733 MT/s if you are running sync @ 1:1

It's possible at 3600 MT/s. Anyhow it looks like ASUS's BIOS magic is at work and you are able to clock above 1800 fclk. That is nice! My board will automatically cut fclock to half as soon as memory clock goes above 1800.

A couple of findings:

• Disabling SMT causes S3 Sleep to disappear from Windows. This is stupid and unacceptable. Does this happen on 3 and 4 series motherboards as well?
• Disabling Gear Down Mode in BIOS improves memory performance noticeably at the cost of stability. I am trying to find out what subtimings I can change to compensate so that I can disable Gear Down Mode while maintaining stability. If anyone knows, please share the knowledge.

Well, it seems like the Gammaxx 400 seemed promising, but according to Ryzen Master, temps slowly just crept towards 95C again... anyways. PBO is not enabled, the BIOS got reset, and I just enabled XMP and Saved.

Idle was 55-60C with the Gammaxx 400, then when I enabled BOINC crunching on 12 threads of PrimeGrid, temps hit 76C, and just slowly crept upwards from there, until they hit 95C.

Is no air cooler strong enough to handle this R5 3600 CPU? I'm having trouble understanding this.

That's odd. XMP profiles are set in the DIMM, not in the board UEFI. Expect updating UEFI on any board you buy anyway since they all shipped Day 1 with pre-1.0.0.3AB UEFI.

What's the cpu fan speed? Single fan?

Isn't it only rated for 130 watt?

I ignore rated TDP on what I'm trying to cool and look for highest rated in my price point.

I think what I went with is rated at 210 watts. Overhead allows one to keep the fan speeds lower. Also helps prevent heat soaking of the cooler.

You seem to have moved on from buying dirt cheap processors just because they're cheap. You need to do the same with your coolers - stop buy dirt cheap coolers. Scythe Ninja 5 is only $60 on newegg/amazon - it'll cool any AM4 CPU without any trouble.

I think that the cooler is rated for 130W TDP, at least, I've seen that referenced on YouTube.

It scored highly compared to some other coolers with 3rd-Gen Ryzen on some YouTube vid.
