Does the fun ever end when you build a (mostly) new computer?
Clear space on living room floor. Disassemble old case (easy as it's toolless). Unplug everything. Unscrew motherboard. Didn't miss a screw or plug so it came out first try. Remove RAM as it's going into a different computer. Remove GPU for this computer.
Install 3900X. Get it lined up first time. Install provided CPU cooler but have problems getting the clip lined up properly. Finally succeed but I was probably being overcautious with a $500 CPU. Look around for CPU fan header and resort to looking in manual. This board has LOTS of fan headers so I choose the one closest to CPU.
I plug the rest of my case fans in (two top, two front, one rear) to fan headers. Yay fan headers! Previous board only had 4 fan headers so two fans had to be plugged into a Molex adapter I had. Toss Molex connector and remove a power cable from the power supply. Yay!
Start to plug everything else in. USB3 header is in a different spot so I have to reroute the cable. Bend a pin on the header. Straighten it. Bend another pin. Straighten it. Resort to getting my portable light so I can see. Success! Plug everything else in.
Move computer back to desk. Plug all the stuff into the back into the computer. While attempting to plug a too-short USB cable into my monitor I accidentally turn my computer on. At least I got my Power connector attached correctly!!!
BSOD!!! Bugcode_NDIS_driver. I restart several times. Same error. To Google, I go! Google says it's often caused by wireless drivers. Restart computer. Enter BIOS. Disable wireless while being thankful I have a wired connection to the internet. Fixed!
Blu-ray player not recognized. Unplug and check. It had become unplugged at the drive end.
Restart and after a few restarts I get Windows Activation errors. Running through the troubleshooter fails and I have to resort to calling Microsoft and I get one of those annoying "please describe your problems" automated voices. "Activating Windows", I say. Not recognized. "What the F***?" Also not recognized, oddly enough.
While on hold I search for my Windows 7 Pro disc with Product Key but only manage to find my Windows 7 Premium disc in the attic. I finally reach a human. Describe my problem. Get transferred. Continue to search while on hold. Find Windows 7 Pro disc ON MY DESK. Because, clearly, the last time I did this I was smart enough to put it within reach but also, clearly, I am not smart enough to remember having done so.
Right now I'm cloning from my boot SSD to NVMe drive after hunting down the software on Crucial's website. I had to unpartition my drive before cloning and it took a few minutes fiddling with the settings to clone a 1 TB drive to a 2 TB drive.
But wait! There's more! Because I get to install another SSD and copy from my mechanical HDs to my old 1 TB SSD and new 2 TB SSD. AND I get to try to fix the wireless adapter and get the Bluetooth working. AND THEN I get to install my new LG 144Hz monitor.
So. Much. Fun.
P.S. I also bought a tiny Sugo SG13 in white and put it next to my TV. Entertainment center, bookshelves, and speakers are white so it blended in. It only took my wife four hours to notice it and yell at me. I consider that success. A 3600 will go in there.
