I'm sure there are a ton of things that more experienced people can critique, but as this is my first full build I'm really happy with how it turned out. Swung by Microcenter on Sunday morning to pick up the CPU and MB. Everything else I've been accumulating over the last few months. I ended up going to a higher tier on the MB than I'd planned as they were out of stock of the cheaper MPG series boards, but I got $50 off it so I'll survive.

3700x
MSI x570 Gaming Pro Carbon
Fractal Design R6
Evga 2080 Black
beQuiet Dark Rock Pro 4
16GB G.Skill Trident Z (3600 CL16 )
500GB Samsung 970
500GB Samsung 860 Evo

This is an upgrade from a 2500k build I got from Cyberpower in 2011.

I don't see how all four screws could bottom out, if it wasn't seated correctly.

Remember, the CPU was drawing 77W. If the heatsink is only rated for 65W, that means that the temps are simply just going to continuously increase, because the heat output exceeds what the heatsink can dissipate.

3000 series is sensitive to thermal paste application. If you think about the IO die and chiplet placement it becomes apparent undercoverage just in the center will not be adequate.

For an idea of where the chiplet(s) are located see:

PSA for people who ordered a 3900x from Best Buy:

Anyone who ordered Sunday morning got a pre-order, NOT an actual order for product. They'll fill the pre-orders on a first-come, first-serve basis as they get stock. I called to ask when they will have units in stock, and they say that they don't know. I'm guessing either the 12th or the 18th/19th since those were the stock dates advertised by B&H who (unlike Best Buy) put up a pre-order on Sunday and labeled it as such. The pessimist in me says it will be the 19th before Best Buy is able to ship a 3900x to anyone.

!!!!

That might explain my temp issues.

I used a half-pea of MX-4 in the center of the CPU heatspreader, and attached a 95W TDP R5 1600 stock heatsink, and under "mining load", I still get temps of 90C+. (Before, it was 94.75C.)

Case sides are off right now. Have two RX 570 8GB MSI cards cranking away underneath the CPU.

So, what are the chances of four 16 GB DIMMs running at 3200? Will it have to drop down to 3000 or do you think they'll be fine at 3200 but with looser timings?

I had toyed with going with four 16 GB DDR4 3200 CL14 DIMMs in the 8700K rig in my sig but thought they'd likely have to drop down in speed to work well. Is the 3x00 series able to accomplish full speed on four DIMMs? I am inching closer to building a new box in late summer/early fall. My current server (dual E5-2620s, 256 GB of RAM, 40 TB of storage) is over capacity and I was thinking about a 3900x, 3950x, or even a Threadripper to build up a high-core count machine where I could use some additional VMs.

I can try it tonight, I have 4 x 16GB Ballisitx 3200, but, only 32gb is going to be used on the 3900X day to day.

Newegg didn't get my mobo out by cut off time so now my parts won't be here on my day off to complete my build on Thursday. I'm filled with indescribable first world sadness now. Please send pics of your builds to get me through the day.

@VirtualLarry does your motherboard support negative voltage offset? I've seen quite a few people getting their temps down with a -0.1 to -0.15 V offset and maintaining the same all core turbo clocks. 1.465V has been turning up a lot on PBO boosts and that seems way too high for stock operation so check if your chip is hitting that kind of voltage.

nvm I'm uber dumb.

what does the game pass actually get you?
Game pass is basically digital versions of Xbox One games enabled to play on PC.
If you have Xbox Live Gold already then just go to the Microsoft Xbox Store and upgrade to the game pass ultimate for a dollar and Microsoft will upgrade your account and convert what ever time you have left on your xbox live gold to the ultimate membership and you wont have to pay again for the game pass till you have to renew your xbox live gold.

Like I have xbox live gold till June 2022 and since I paid the dollar sign up fee for game pass ultimate I dont ever have to pay for it again till july 2022. Hope that makes sense.
Any ways they have all brand new games like forza horizon 4, Gears of war 4 and soon gears of war 5, killer instinct, metro exodus, prey, and many many other something like 100+ games.
and unlike where the xbox one only upscale the 1080p texture images to 4k you can actually play 4k texture images at true 4k or 8k if your pc can handle it.

All the games are free to download as long as you are a paid member.
If you are a XBOX fan like me then you are gonna want to get the game pass ultimate asap before they stop the promotional $1 dollar sign up fee.
Plus Halo MMC and Halo 5 are about to drop and that alone makes it worth the purchase.

why is 3700X $410 on Amazon? I'd order one if I could get free 2-day shipping

EDIT: the certified reseller is normal price, but also ships from CA

3700x is $329 also in stock.

Oh lord...….the 3900X was an extreme impulse purchase. Maybe I should dial back to a 3700X......

Do you guys think the stock cooler will be OK in a small case like my Riotoro CR1080 which has limited ventilation? Doubt I'll overclock.

What's the difference between a 64GB Ballistix Sport LT kit and this 64GB Vengeance LPX kit? Best I can tell, the timings are the same, with the Sport LT being $13 more.

I was initially leaning towards this G.Skill TridentZ kit, but realized the NH-D15 I ordered is going to overhang at least one slot (if not two), so it didn't seem like it was worth the extra money. I would've loved this one, but not at that price.

Crucial is the retail division of Micron, Micron makes all their own chips in the USA.

They are also very underrated, as they spec for maximum stability.

They should be able to clock 3466 or 3333 with a bit of tweaking, or run 3200 with tightened timings, maybe even 3600 OC, but I have not put anything together yet.

G.Skill uses whatever chips they can get their hands on.

I may just try and sell my 2700x and keep the extra 3900x

That could work too. No reason not to have another 4 cores in the house right?

Worst-case scenario, it throttles back some and you save on power from lower clocks. If you don't want to manually OC or use PBO, you can still gain some advantage (to an extent) from stouter cooling, though in a small case AiO may be your only option (assuming custom water is off the table). If you put a 240mm rad on the front, though, you won't have any real airflow and you may not have room for a dGPU . . . that thing is small.
