Yay, Amazon went back into stock, I managed to snag one. Now onto some motherboard research. Has anyone managed to find some x570 reviews yet for mid tier boards? I'm getting a blank.

Building a 3900X machine for a buddy; is there a general consensus of what mobos to use? ATX or Micro ATX. He doesn't have an unlimited budget but also isn't a cheapskate. He'll be reusing his flare X 3200mhz 14-14-14-34 RAM from his current 1700X build.

@DarthKyrie , thanks !

Of course. I bought a $105 1600 dinosaur just to upgrade the bios. When they come out, my x370 Taichi will have one of my 3900x's in it, and my 3950x will be in a x470 ,otherboard. Or I will get an X570 to see how they are.

There are supposed to be some sweet E-ATX X570 MB coming soonish that have the full fat chip that draws the same 15W as the I/O die on EPYC. I think I saw a couple with dual Intel 10G Ethernet but I could be mistaken and they only had 1 Intel and 1 other brand but both were definitely 10G.

What board does he have now? It could be just a drop-in replacement if the MB makers ever release updated BIOS's with AGESA 1.0.0.3 AB to properly use Ryzen 3000. If the board has an AGESA 1.0.0.2 BIOS it should work almost perfectly there will just be an issue with the CPU clocking properly.

He has an x370 Tiachi. I want to make sure that whatever route he takes he's golden, he's not super tech savvy. I understand that X370 mobos will work, but don't want it to be a compromise. If people are seeing good luck with the Tiachi then maybe I'll have him go that route, although PCI-E 4.0 is sure tempting moving forward with M.2 drives, etc.

Cinebench R20 single core, pinned to CPU0 in Windows.

4500 core, 504 points.

Don't ask where the other 100 is right now, pick B350 or BIOS needs to be ComboPI 1.0.0.3ABA.

All threads ran really quick at 4025 per core.

Happy?

Gammaxx 400, AS Ceramique 2, 3900X, Auto CPU Voltage, PBO Auto, Asus Prime B350-Plus, 5007 BIOS, 8GB 2400, Corsair AX860i

I had a bad experience with a Gigabyte X370 Aorus board, so I’m a little reluctant to buy another Gigabyte. I had previously used a few Gigabyte boards over the previous years and liked them, but I as really disappointed by their BIOS in the X370 board and felt they weren’t truthful in the advertising.

The Asus CH8 is another board I’m looking at - good feature set and good aesthetics.

That's understandable. I was helping out a friend on his build a few years back who was dead set on ASRock, due to the price. After all the headaches I watched him deal with, I swore them off, too. I've had some builds with Asus and Gigabyte boards that are still alive and kicking (*knock on wood*), so I decided to give GB a shot this time around. Worst case, I'll just RMA it, or get a refund and buy a different board.

Looks like the x570 Strix-F and x570 Tuf have 8 sata ports, and you'd only lose two if you used both M2 slots. At least, that's what's listed on that spreadsheet someone on overclock.net made indicates.
Caught a Buildzoid video last night, and he was pushing the sub-$300 x570 boards pretty hard, saying they were really good. If that aorus master sucks or is DOA, I'll switch to one of those instead.

If you're not going to build with it, I might personally consider scalping it on ebay or something. Are they still in sporadically-short supply? (Arriving in batches, at stores?)
If I had $500 + ship, I'd make you an offer for it.

In EU R9 3900X is sold out. For example german Mindfactory(lagernd or in stock), you can pay/order but you have to wait 26.7 for new shipment.

@Markfw The reason why you are limited to 2666 RAM and crap performance on 1.0.0.1 was because that was a pre-release BIOS intentionally crippled by AMD to prevent early performance leaks (yeah, genius move that... ). You need a board BIOS with AGESA 1.0.0.2 or better to even clock your RAM past 2666... and need 1.0.0.3+ for boost clocks to work correctly

So yeah, probably will be a month or so with AGESA 1.0.0.4 before most things "just work" for most people. As it is, if you are comfortable changing settings in BIOS you can get most of the way there in anything 1.0.0.2 and up. Or if you're just using typical 3200 MHz or lower RAM kits it'll probably all work on XMP settings because this memory compatibility is definitely leagues beyond Zen/+.

Nothing newer available for the x470 Taichi.

Same with the X370 Taichi which is what my buddy uses. I'll be monitoring this thread to see how updated bios do so if anyone has that mobo and runs a 3900X I'm very curious how it performs.

So what I'm seeing is:

MSI rocks for having beta BIOSes available with AGESA 1.0.0.3 for pretty much everything (yes, even the old $50 B350M Gaming Pro mATX mobo I sold to another user here), AND is eating everyone's lunches for memory support.

Followed by most of the other vendors with buggy AGESA 1.0.0.2 based BIOSes for older boards

Followed by ASRock which has utterly failed its launch users by not making anything newer than 1.0.0.1 available, which should never have released to end users in the first place

Pretty clear who I would go with in retrospect if you want to be an early adopter.

Hopefully, ASRock will offer a new BIOS soonish.

I've got 24 GB of the DDR4-3000 LPX I could use, but I wanted either 32 or 64 and maybe something a little faster. Super memory speed isn't too essential for me, given my usage scenario. With the motherboard situation the way it is, I'm losing enthusiasm and may decide to sell it to Mark and wait until the fall.

I'm selfishly hoping you keep that 3900x and run it on that X370 Taichi, since that's the board I have as well and I'd be interested in your experience. Too bad ASrock is taking their sweet time with the bios updates. BTW, go Colts! I'm from Fishers originally and a huge Colts fan as well

I'll also be interested to see your results with the X370 Taichi, although it sounds like that might be a bit longer of a wait. Everyone is posting about zen 2 with X470/B450, but I hardly see anything for X370 owners, especially the Taichi.

I finally put together my new build and I can’t get it to post.

instead, when i turn the computer on it runs for about 10-15 seconds, then I hear a “click” from the power supply, and it restarts. I thought the click might signal a short, but i disconnected and reconnected all the wires and components minus the cpu and mobo.

I have a b450 itx fatality that micro center said had been flashed with the new bios. I’m thinking maybe that was a miscommunication since at this point i can’t think of what else the issue might be. Any similar experiences/suggestions?

Crucial Ballistix is using Micron E-die which is supposed to work well with Ryzen and the heat spreaders are barely larger than the DIMMS themselves. .

Those DIMMs are about 40mm tall, so the options with an NH-D15 would be to either raise the front 140mm fan up (if the case has enough space for that), swap the front fan for a 120mm, or remove it altogether, and use it like an NH-D15S and mount the 140mm fan as a case fan somewhere.

The Ballistix DIMMs are definitely too tall to for the NH-D15 in its default configuration (there's just 32mm space under that front fan).

Take the system back to microcenter, and ask them to "reflash" it. Tell then it was supposed to work.

I thought that I saw a few sets of low profile E-die kits.

I have an unopened Ryzen 9 3900x sitting about 5 feet from me right now. To be honest, I'm seriously thinking about returning it and not going forward with a build until things calm down. The motherboard situation is a mess and I'm not sure about RAM either - I assume something like Corsair LPX @ 3200 will work at full speed, but who knows at this stage?

Theoretically, the 64GB kit of LPX 3200 I ordered should be here tomorrow afternoon. Assuming it actually does arrive on time (I've got a feeling it'll end up being Wednesday morning) and the DIMMs aren't DOA, I'll let you know how it goes.

I originally intended to put it in my X370 Taichi, but after reading about memory issues and other possible compromises, I decided to hold off and maybe consider a new board. Both Reddit and OC.net have X370 Taichi threads where folks are using the 3rd gen Ryzen; here is the O.C. link:

O.C.NET X370 Taichi thread

If Asrock were to release a BIOS upgrade with AGESA 1.0.0.3ab, it might solve most of the problems but who knows when (or if) that will happen.

Go Colts!

That's quite possible, but I haven't stumbled across any in the last 3-4 weeks I've been looking. That's the sole reason I even went with the LPX kit, since I got the same cooler for my 3900X build. Otherwise, I would've snagged a Ballistix kit, or maybe a CL14 G.Skill kit.
