So, my new build is up and running.

I have to thank @IndyColtsFan. I could not find stock for the 3900x anywhere and then I got a PM. Turns out he had ordered one and already received it, but, was not sure about keeping it. He asked if I wanted to buy it from him at cost plus usps shipping. I still cant find stock anywhere, so, a big thanks goes out to him on doing me a huge favor.

Hmm, thanks for the various replies folks on the Tomahawk Max ... looks like it's probably worth waiting for, and even if I plan to run on stock cooling and keep clocks conservative, it may be worthwhile depending on pricing differences in the US market.

Congrats on the build Realibrad

First weird thing I have found. Heros of the storm is saying that there is a cpu issue. Temps are fine. Clocks are fine. Performance is fine.

It's a Blizzard bug, reported by other users as well:
https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/heroes/t/cpu-performance-error-amd-ryzen/23227
https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/heroes/t/cpu-performance-bug/23226

Apparently whatever performance checking code they put in doesn't play nice with the advanced power management features of the Ryzen 3000 series and erroneously flags the CPU.

Anyone worried that there are not going to be "budget" X570 boards?

I guess $200 ish?

I already have an X399 Taichi.

If they are as much as a TR board, I may pass on Zen2 until TR3 is out.

There are many options available under $200 already, unless your hung up on power delivery overkill, features you won't use, and I guess bling.

Yay! I'm in the process of upgrading my 3600 to a 3700x that was delivered yesterday. I had to order some TIM and a couple of better fans for my rig before I could start. My rigs in pieces currently and is in donor mode.

I picked up the Crosshair VI/R5 1600 combo a few weeks back during the Bestbuy $200 combo deal and haven't done anything with it yet. I decided that I'll use some donor parts from my rig to see if I could get the 3600 up and running in the CH6. I read online that it's been hit and miss with the CH6 and the 3xxx series. I didn't want to open the 1600 unless I really had to so I went for the usb flashback to the latest uEFI to give it a whirl. After it was done I powered it off, installed the 3600, wraith cooler from the 3700x, gpu, and dropped in 1 stick of b-die and hit the start button. MB light were on the fan started to spin and stopped as it hung on a C5 error code. Dang nammit! I googled for info and found a post from somebody with the same issue and he said it's memory related and there was no way to fix it other than usb flashback. So usb flashback #2 and dang C5 again. I decided to try another memory slot, but when I went to push the release it wasn't snapped all the way down. Silly oversight by me! Pushed the memory down till it clicked, pushed start button and she booted up. Loaded optimized defaults and rebooted. Went back into the uEFI to look around and set the memory to 3200 and she booted back up instantly. Powered off and that's as far as I got today as I have to tidy up my mess for the night.

I'm planning on playing around with the combo for a day or two before I put my rig back together. Looks like a feature rich MB to play around with. Not really liking the way the uEFI is laid out so far, but I guess once I play around a little it'll maybe grow on me.

I'll keep you guys posted on how my adventure goes.

I may have missed where you have already discussed this, but why are you upgrading from the 3600 to the 3700x, so soon?

So I noticed that during the time I was at Quakecon, a BIOS update 3.50 was released for the X470 Taichi. Currently on 3.46 beta bios. Does it make sense to flash to the latest? @Markfw what is your experience with this?

Not much different, but I did it anyway, since its not beta.

I needed a better cpu to pair up with the CH6 motherboard so I decided to move my 3600 over to it. I figured I already played around with a 3600 so I'd give the 3700x a whirl. One of the WTF moments!

After much waiting and acrimony, my watercooled 3900x is up and running.

Despite temps staying nice and low, it isn't boosting terribly high @ stock. It hits ~4100 MHz in CBR20 and hits 3825 MHz in Prime95 Small FFTs. Interestingly enough, it runs cooler in Prime95 (58C) vs CBR20 (~61C). This is with all stock settings on x570 Aorus Master.

Defaults are holding it to the TDC limit of 95a in Prime95. In CBR20 it can hit the full EDC limit of 140a. Intriguing. This chip wants 140a just to hit 4125 MHz? What a power (current) hog. I have a lot of work to do tuning this system . . . that will take time.

I've been finding that the stock algorithms are very loose and don't really seem to make a lot of sense when it comes to boosting the 3900x. Run a few ST benches and find your best clocking CCX/Cores and use the per CCX OC tool to set a manual OC, you should at the very least be able to get your golden CCX to 4.4-4.5 at reasonable voltage. Set the rest to 4.3 or 4.35 and forget about stock settings.

My 3700X is on water and I was thinking 55c was too hot for stock settings @ full load. I don't really know what it's boosting at (maybe 4.2) but I think my monitoring software needs an update--or something isn't reporting accurately.

I'm still waiting on the Flare X kits to arrive (one being RMA) because for some reason my entire system randomly skips a beat every now and then. Only happens for a half a second but kind of annoying. Between that and my sound card suddenly becoming unusable I've got plenty of tweaking to do myself. I also noticed that my Vega 64 is always showing full LED tach but GPU usage is not 100%. No idea...

I am also waiting here. I also ordered the 3900X, Getting desperate.

Did you also happen to test single thread performance vs let's say gen 1 Ryzens?

I am in a strange case where I really need high ST performance in QEMU and several cores to spread across my VMs.
I was hoping the 3900X would be hitting 4.3+ GHz all core.
I could see you already have good cooling. Would future BIOS updates help with the boost?

Also I was kinda hoping the second batch of 3900X to be better.
Apparently the initial batch of Ryzen 1700X had the seg fault but not later batches. So it could be a good thing to miss the initial batch?

My 1800x @ 4.0 GHz with DDR4-3333 14-14-14-28 got 395 ST in CBR20.

My 3900x @ stock boosting to 4150 MHz with DDR4-2133 15-15-15-?? got 485 ST in CBR20.

It's a pretty good improvement. I'm pretty sure I can get it to run faster . . . won't have much time with it until next weekend, alas.

I was hoping the 3900X would be hitting 4.3+ GHz all core.

Might need a static overclock for that.

About 40-45C under a 360mm aio.

Important to note, it's a different formula for the temperature reading now. Whereas before it was taking the absolute highest/hottest temperature reported (i.e. hotspot temp), it is now not only ramping up boost on idle less rapidly, it is also taking a "smoothed" temperature reading more representative of the die temperature by measuring at multiple sensors over a small time interval.

So combined with the relaxed boost from idle conditions you will see 1) lower idle temps and 2) less "spiky" temps. This doesn't really change anything in terms of power draw or performance so it's basically dumbing down the temperature reporting to placate the OCD types who complained about it.

How do you guys test your memory overclocks? I don't really want to use anything I have to boot from and can't see my temps and voltages.

Is something like running Aida64 stress while using MemTest64 to suck up and test what's left of the memory good enough? Or just letting MemTest64 suck up all available by itself run for ?? hrs?

Trying to dial in a Crosshair VI 3600 combo with some d-die @3600 CL14 currently.
