G.Skill Ripjaws 2x8GB f4-3200c14-16GFX. Not on the compatibility list (not tested) but others with the same ram chips from G.Skill are compatible. I'll mess with the ram sticks at some point today or tomorrow. Thanks for the link, although I found it late last night. That debug code coincides with the start of memory initialization, but it doesn’t make sense that it just freezes - it should jump to an error code. The freeze is what confuses me, seems like the boot process should continue - unless there is a problem with the motherboard. I checked that the cpu was properly seated when I installed it and just before attaching the heat sink - it was level and firmly attached.
I am leaning towards a faulty mobo but test with only one RAM stick at a time or try different memory. That does suck you got a board with debug LED's but still get a code error instead.

BTW that is a nice looking board and with three M.2 slots I would have chosen it as well. Also I thought MSi was best for memory compatibility.

I use G.Skill 3200MHz b-die and my MSI board has had issues with it at least on 1 uEFI version. It would still boot, but wouldn't run at spec or my normal 3600 CL14 that it loves to run at.

I'd probably try another uEFI version or 2 just in case it's just a borked uEFI.

Just picked up the memory for my build went with
Gskill Trident Z RGB Series 16GB (2x8) DDR4 3200
CAS 14-14-14-34

I was looking at 3600 Memory with lower timings but couldn't find any in stock so this will do.

Decided to just try running with just one stick of ram. The board errors out with 'no boot device detected'. I have three drives attached, 1 M.2 drive and 2 SATA drives - so BS error, this system is on drugs.

Did you check the bios and make sure your boot drive is the first listed?

I think you’re right - just waiting to see if my post on the MSI forums sheds any light. Thing is, when I've had a bad board in the past, I returned it and picked a different brand (though I’ve never had a no post problem on a home system b/4).

Gigabyte had a problem moving to 1.0.0.3ABBA in one of their UEFI revisions where it was impossible for the system to recognize certain m.2 drives unless you picked them from the boot menu. 970 Evos were affected, which was particularly bad. They released a UEFI update to fix the problem. It stands to reason that you might be getting a similar issue from MSI.

Picked up the Cooler today.

Decided to go Corsair H150i AIO.

Only thing left is the PSU then I can start the build.

Okay. Tested the PSU voltages at multiple points, 12, 5 and 3.3 volts are fine. Tried using just one drive at a time, several different SATA cable - still get no boot device found. RMA time. I guess I’ll find out if Amazon cross ships.

I'll try this one more time. Stuck a 9900k system in my wish list in case this fails again.

Does that mean you are seeing the BIOS now?

No, still fails to post with a 'no boot device detected' error - hence the RMA. Amazon does cross ship, so I’ll know this weekend if the new board is good.

"Back in the day", i.e. a decade ago, boards not booting at all would often signal a CPU issue. Hoping this isn't the case for you but keep it in mind.

Anyone else running the 3700X on water? What are your average temps doing normal everyday tasks?

I'd feel better if I was 10c cooler... but can't verify if software is actually reporting the correct temps

Never had a bad cpu. This motherboard does have 4 LEDs for cpu, dram, vga and boot errors. The CPU isn’t throwing an error. Thanks though.

Are you using HWinfo64? I was told that it was the best to use with Ryzen.

No, AIDA64 Extreme... seems to be on par with what the board is reporting in BIOS but that's hard to test.

I can see if HWinfo portable sees the same readings

I've always used AIDA64 for testing, but have HWinfo64 open for temp monitoring.

@Ajay, so to fully clarify, when you say "no boot device detected", you are NOT seeing that as words on the screen, but rather, that is your interpretation of the "boot" debug LED lit, correct? Because if you're getting "no boot device detected" on-screen in text, and the screen is initializing, then you are, in fact, POSTing, you're just not BOOTing.

My 3700x is maybe 40C browsing or light tasks. Idles at low 30s. 58C for Cinebench R20 runs.

Have you tested with Prime95 yet? It's the best for checking your CPU temps, if you ask me. Set it to small FFTs, and see how high your temps get.

Well, that's about where I'm at--with some spikes up toward 60c+ with really heavy loads.

I may just bite the bullet and re-apply my paste but I've honestly never had an issue with thermal performance. I'm certainly not in any danger, just a bit underwhelmed with my cooling setup. If I do decide to reapply, I might change out the block since it's a few gens old at this point. My Vega card, on water, doesn't come anywhere close to the temp of the CPU--even at 100% load.

Sounds like you are good, but if you want more proof, run prime 95. If your temps max out in the 70 range or lower, then your paste is fine.
