Or you could have been me and paid even more for the 5950X. You couldn't find it anywhere and I bought it from an eBay scalper for $200 over retail. It's now at $375. FML
But, you got to use it for quite a while now. PC parts are always going to be cheaper at a later time. I never worry about that as long as I feel like I got my $$ worth at the time I bought it. What really sucks is when you pay $200 over retail and it's $200 under retail within a week or so.

Made an edit. MSRP = ' premium ' to me
Almost bought a ATI 6800 from a scalper around that same time, but it was lost in transit.
( lucky for me - got my money back ) ... and came back to reality

bba-tcg is on point ... been enjoying this immensely

There was a shortage of almost everything in early 2021. Ram and NVMe were high as well. Even my Seasonic Prime Titanium 850W was very hard to find back then. I couldn't find the 5950X anywhere. At the time, it was the fastest consumer CPU for everything, including gaming. I had purchased all the parts minus the CPU. When the price dropped to $200 over retail, I bit. No regrets. However, I never did upgrade my GPU. I'm not paying $2000+ for a graphics card. I think some of the halo cards at the time were going for 2-3x retail. Nuts.

And yes, my computer is like a Ferrari. Albeit, a quiet Ferrari.

That's about the time I bought a 5950X for about $150 over retail. I was okay with it because I own a PC business and regularly charge above retail (since I generally have to pay retail to get whatever it is). I just realized I was the customer this time. Of course, I no longer own that particular machine.

Once I had that data for test results, I would have grouped the graphs by L3 cache size, not by number of cores.
He was patting himself on the back for myth busting so many saying 8 cores was a better investment. Hence he wanted the compare and contrast between 6 and 8 as well as cache size. Of course he didn't do the in depth testing necessary to reach that conclusion. Instead he fired the arrow and then painted the bullseye around it.

His Spiderman, Baldur's Gate 3, and Plaque Tale saves where he runs his 30 second passes, are not peak CPU use for those games. Spiderman you pick a save when Broadway is chock-a-block with NPCs and swing fast along it close to the street or run and zip line around there. Plague Tale the marketplace full of NPCs is a tough spot. His BG3 save has to be ACT 1. Gamers Nexus uses an ACT 3 save a viewer provided. U.S. Steve uses CL14 3200 ram and a 4090 too. HUB gets 132 avg 100 1%. GN gets 115 avg 65 1% because it is more CPU heavy on the 5800X3D.

That's not to say a 5600X is not a good gaming CPU. I picked up the 5600 and 5600X here in the forums for $100 each. They've been great. I am just doing my usual rant about doing lazy testing then saying "See? I told you so." Then forum dwellers reference that lazy bigger bar better chart like it's the gold standard.

If he wanted to really squash the beef he should test CPUs from when the debate over core count was at its peak. The consoles were using a CPU a lot like the 3700X so the advice was to match that to ensure your system could enjoy a long life. Intel 9th gen was a major factor for those discussions too.

Anyways, I'll wrap this up. I am just enjoying that Zen 3 continues to be relevant. Yet it'll be 4yrs old this November. The schadenfreude comes from haters claiming $300 for the 5600X was too much money. But here we are and it still gets the job done nicely. You could sell it and upgrade to a 5700X3D for about $150 out of pocket if you wanted. No board or ram to buy. No reinstalls or data migrations. Good stuff.

I'm considering upgrading my work computer from a 3800X + 2x8GB to a 5950X + 2x32GB.

The specs are:

MSI B450 Gaming Plus Max
Enermax Revolution DF 80+ Gold 650W
Noctua NH-U14S CPU Cooler
Inno3D GeForce GTX 1650 Super Twin X2 OC

Is there anything I should be aware of befor doing so? Any recommendation towards memory? Are there any problems running 2x32GB with the 5950X?

You should be fine, though 4x16GB might be easier, not sure, and it is probably easier to find. The AM4 UEFI updates have come a long way, and the memory controllers on Zen 3 are pretty good, so I doubt you should have to worry too much. That said, I have only ever used 8GB DIMMs on AM4, but my experience is that 4x8GB is no problem on Zen 3 at least up to 3200MT/s.

There are lots of 2x32GB kits, so that is not a problem. I just thought that two sticks are preferable over four if possible?

just a small selection I'm looking at (obviously not the SO-DIMMs ):

I suspect any of those should be fine. If you are looking to OC/tweak the RAM, then you might want to look further into what DRAM dies the kits use, if possible. If not, just go with a good 3200 or 3600 that is within budget.

I don't plan any tweaking or overclocking I just want it be plug and play and stability.

Make sure the kit you get is on your mobo's QVL to avoid potential issues. Otherwise, Kingston should work.

Oh yeah, you want DDR4-3600 or 3800 if you want heavy MT. Those cores are starved for B/W.
The problem is that the B450 board only has one 32GB kit on the QVL since they stopped updating in 2022, while the B550 version has 10+ pages, so I hope it doesn't matter that much as it is the memory controller on the 5950x and not the chipset that matters.

Check the RAM manufacturer's website for a QVL and see if they have anything listed. My son's system has Corsair 2x16 with a 5600X on an MSI B550 Tomahawk. The RAM was not on the QVL but works just fine. There's so many kits it's impossible for them to keep up.

It's the same, QVL on the B450 is very lackluster 2666Mhz max, while 3800Mhz when choosing the similar B550 board.

Bummer. My son is running a 3600 CL18 kit. We originally planned to go with a 16 GB 3600 CL16 kit, but for a few bucks more we got the 32 GB CL18. I think worst case you might not be able to get the full XMP speed and may have to back off a little.

Some more comments on Reddit. As usual you'll have to look for the relevant posts.

I generally find the memory controller to make more difference than the board when it comes to RAM limitations on AM4. I would go ahead and get a good 3600 kit. You can always return it as well. Also, in my experience, MSI has pretty good BIOS support for Ryzen, so don't forget to look into BIOS updates.

Yes, I'm running the newest bios already. I'll guess I will just have to try it out.

My son's system at the moment is a 3700X with 4x8GB CL16 3200 on a AORUS ELITE B450 with a bios from last year. It's the super cheap Silicon Power kits that were popular a couple of years ago. Rock solid.

My experience with AM4 is it's mostly on the IMC. Only getting to or past 3600 was ever an issue. I had 4 Ryzen 3600s and probably double that number of kits of ram paired trying to get 3600 with just 2 sticks and the best I ever got solid was 3466. That was on 3 and 4 series boards with whatever bios was available at that point.
