Hello,

I haven't built myself a new PC since my intel i7-8700k. I throw everything into my PCs - Adaptec SmartRAID 3154-16i, Quad port 10Gbit nic, 16 drives, gaming card - currently a 3080. I use my main PC as a video server, a support workstation, a gaming PC, financial PC etc. I haven't wanted a new PC in a while but this one is finally getting a little long in the tooth and ideally even my backup has a backup and I gave away my spare PC so I only have one backup currently.

There is always something better coming out but since the new Ryzen is only a month or two away - I thought I'd ask people who may keep a closer eye on hardware if there is a good reason to wait. I'm a little concerned there may not be many motherboards available for the 9700x even if it turns out to be a good CPU.

FYI - I have never replaced a CPU on any of my systems going back to a 386-40. By the time I'm ready for a new processor, I'm ready for a new PC IMHO.

Existing B650 and X670 boards will be perfectly fine for a 9700X. AMD mandated bios flashback just for this circumstance - when a new processor comes out so you can update to the supporting bios version.

If you want the new features coming with X870, then you'll likely be waiting as those are forecast to come after Zen 5 release date.

All signs point to the 9700X being quite a bit faster for everything except gaming, where it is expected to be slightly behind a 7800X3D. The X3D zen 5 parts are rumored to come soon, like September, so you could potentially wait for those.

Personally, I'd wait for Zen 5 X3D if possible. If you feel the need to upgrade before September, waiting for a 9700X still seems like a good move.

Thanks for the info! I guess if I can wait I'll have to find an x870 with enough slots - ideally in an extended motherboard. Some of the cards are incredibly hot so I make thin cards with fans on them to go inbetween. I do a lot to keep my case quiet despite having about 11 fans in it.

I throught they said faster PCIe for the graphics - does the old one already have that?

I'll be honest since I have an insane amount of USB stuff - a faster usb onboard does sound tempting.

I'd say, 9700X 'cos it should be fast in everything, not just games. If price isn't an issue, that's a no brainer to me.
Or wait for 97000X3D of course....

Seconded. Unless gaming is your primary use for the PC, you don't want to rely solely on a 7800X3D. It's a good CPU, but it's not even the best applications processor AMD sells right now (usually that's the 7950X, depending on what you're doing).

faster PCIe
X670/x870 motherboard chipset are both the same other than the new one requires the 40gbps ports be onboard. Both have gen 5 slot for GPU or anything else you might want to put there.

As for the CPU itself current Zen 4 7xxx vs Zen 5 9xxx should be about 20% faster according to the leaks / benchmarks. Which is to be expected to demand a price increase from either AMD or Intel.
