x86 CPUs are still overpriced compared to similar die size SOCs. Now that the market is competitive again, it's ripe for a price war. Wait until Intel drops prices to maintain share and keep foundry full.

Living 20 mins from a Microcenter I'm finding it hard to believe I'll find a better deal than a 1700X + motherboard for $360 after tax.

I'll wait for the new Intel stuff -- self admitted Intel fanboy here with my 2500k being so great for so long, but man I don't see an Intel deal comparing to this. The problem is I don't even have to upgrade my 2500k, its still perfectly fine. Really just want to upgrade for the hell of it. When there is no real reason to upgrade, I'm way less inclined to spend 2x on an Intel chip+board.

Love the idea of a 7820x at 4.8ghz but that chip plus a board will probably run ~$800. Is it gonna be worth $440 more dollars than a 1700x when an 8 year old 2500k is still good enough for me? I doubt it...

Update 03/06: AMD reached out to us and commented that this is not an official price-change. It could be implemented by local retailers or distributors.

IMHO it was clear from the start that it is just discounts given by various retailers, it is too soon to drop prices and dropping them based on their own product is nonsense too - not when the new thing is complementary and not a replacement to the Ryzen 7 range.

IMHO it was clear from the start that it is just discounts given by various retailers, it is too soon to drop prices and dropping them based on their own product is nonsense too - not when the new thing is complementary and not a replacement to the Ryzen 7 range.

The only reason to do a pre-release price drop is to clear inventory. Since TR isn't a replacement but a step above in market most businesses would just wait till the new product is released and combine the price drop with the new product portfolio.

AMD sought to squash several news stories that have circulated over the last few days, saying AMD trimmed prices of its Ryzen chips. The company denied there were any across-the-board price cuts. "We have noted some speculative articles appearing commenting on AMD's pricing following Computex and would like to reiterate that Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 5 pricing remains unchanged," the company told PCWorld.

So only store specific price cuts.

To be fair, TPU got it wrong also. I trusted TPU so I posted that it was an official price cut, only to be informed later that TPU had to add an edit because AMD has officially denied any price cut.
