JayzTwoCents on overclocking a Ryzen 7 1800X.

He specifically mentions that when Ryzen OC fails, it doesn't BSOD, it just black-screens. Which is what I've been seeing. Apparently, I have an extremely poor OCer, as my Ryzen 5 1600 CPU doesn't want to run much above 3.7Ghz.

I presume you've tried LLC and/or increasing SOC voltage for system stability?

As I mentioned before, better cooling can increase your headroom by a lot and how far you can overclock. You should know this by now. Did you settle on a CLC system yet? I can guarantee you that your chip can overclock well. Just requires a bit better cooling.

What's your current hash rate? I was thinking of doing the same thing, but wasn't quite sure on whether or not to pull the trigger on a 1080 or something.

Ah, I assumed you attempted to from your post. How much did you end up selling it for? If it's pretty high, I may end up doing the same thing.

I sold my Radeon RX 480 4GB for $300 "Buy it now".

I literally sold it in two minutes.

I have the ASUS Dual-Fan model which is selling for lower than other models for some reasons.

Going to try that too. I'm tempted to grab either a 1070 or a 1080 Ti. Not sure yet! I mostly play games, and I'm hoping I can still use my 144 Hz monitor, even though it's Freesync.

$300 for a 480? That's crazy. Mining is a silly business you know!

I see people selling reference 290s for $240 or more, good grief.

Jeez, this stuff is crazy. Seems like this hasn't hit Norway quite yet (at least in terms of price, but 580s are sold out across the board), but it does make me wary for when Vega launches. Shortages? Looks like it.

Nvidia has the DX12 issues so maybe sell now and wait for Vega and/or Volta if doable? Vega is 2 months away, Volta is likely a bit further down the road but some SKUs got to arrive this year.

I definitely wanted to get Vega. But at the same time, I do need a gpu to use. I did get an offer on my 480 for 450. And I'm tempted to sell it so I can go ahead and get a couple of cards or something, or just save it. I didn't know Nvidia has DX12 problems. I do play BF1, and stuff. I do want something with stable frames, but at the same time if I do go Nvidia, I'd like to still be able to use my 144 Hz FreeSync monitor, even if I dont turn freesync on.

I haven't seen anything that said the consumer versions are coming out this year. Unless I missed something.
There was a quote from Computex from ... I want to say someone from Acer? Although that sounds weird. Was it Zotac? I can't really remember, unfortunately. Anyhow, they said something like one of their products would be perfect for the GTX 20-series, "which is arriving this holiday season/Q4" or some such. It was a pretty clear quote. I'll have a look around to see if I can find it.

I know this is not a Vega thread, but I will say this much: as much as I want a consumer Vega card for my system, if there are too many shortages, I'll have to get a Fiji instead. Or something. Or just stay with the 390 for awhile? Whatever.

So has anyone here gotten DDR4-3600 stable yet? If so I'd like to know what DIMMs you used, what board, and what timings/voltages. I'm sort of sticking with DDR4-3466 14-14-14-28 for now since it is actually a little hard to dial it in (shotgunning isn't working as well as I had thought), so constantly tweaking is getting to be a headache.

MasterLiquid Lite 120mm AIO CLC

Currently $39.99 ($10 discount)

Only comes with one fan, but comes with both sets of screws for a push-pull arrangement.

Can get nicer non-Lite version with two fans pre-installed for $69.99.

I'm cheap, so I opted for the $39.99 model.

Seems to be the cheapest AIO CLC that's AM4-compatible out-of-the-box?

Larry, you aren't going to be able to keep your temps down with a single 120mm radiator if you are overclocking....especially at those volts you are trying to use. That is literally no better than an air cooler that you are using. 240mm rad or bust pretty much.

That depends on a lot of things, especially the fan and radiator. Remember, the 120mm rad and single fan on the Radeon Fury X manages to cool a 275W GPU to below a 65°C temp target at reasonable (<2000rpm) fan speeds. That's a thicker than average copper radiator, though. Cheap AIOs are often aluminum, and thin. And they don't come with Gentle Typhoons pre-mounted

The one he's getting is pretty cheaply made. According to that review he posted, at stock it still managed to hit 72c with a 7700k which is notoriously hot.. He still has 1) The computer case in a wooden cubby/desk. 2) He's still overclocked at 1.35-1.4v, and 3) Air cooler currently hits 82c. With how thin that radiator is, it's not going to be cooling much at all. And he even said he opted for just 1 fan...so you see in his case it really is no better than an air cooler. He might as well spend 50 dollars and get a Cryorig or something that will adequately cool his cpu.

That's probably true. Although $40 is very cheap for an AIO, you don't have to go much over that to get a really, really good air cooler.

@VirtualLarry How much of a challenge/problem would it be for you to get a hole saw or some such, cut a hole in the back of your PC cubby, and stick a 120mm or 140mm fan in there to draw out hot air? That would be my solution to your problem. Whether you mod it to run off USB, run a 12V line out of the PC, or use a separate 12V power adapter with a SATA plug or some such, that's up to you. But I would stick a fan in there. If the back of the desk is against a wall, the rearmost part of the side of the cubby might be better for airflow.

Well, with the Wraith Spire air cooler included with my Ryzen 5 1600, overclocked to 3.70Ghz, at 1.2875V VCORE, I was hitting 86C Package Temp. (That's the temp that the Ryzen Master software monitors.)

Which, seems rather high to me.

Which, is why I wonder if the 2.400V that HWMonitor is reporting, is somehow accurate? CPU-Z and Ryzen Master report normal CPU VCORE ranges.

The UEFI in my ASRock AB350M Pro4 (2.40) doesn't seem to offer "offset voltage", "SoC voltage", or "LLC level" settings.
