The MSI Titanium looks badass. Full VR, here we come!

This is my first all AMD build since like 2001 (AMD & ATI)... I'm stoked.

That was a Slot A, 1000Mhz Athlon Thunderbird, 64MB PC133 and 40GB HDD with an Radeon 7500 AGP.

My build after that was close to all AMD, it was an Athlon XP 3200 (Barton) with a Gigabyte GA-7VT600 1394 512MB DDR PC3200 (400Mhz), 2x 80GB PATA, nVidia GeForce FX 5700LE.

Still have most of the parts, though the Motherboard (Shuttle AI61) is dead.

Back in the day yeah, I replaced it with an 6800 AGP and then a 7800 AGP (I still have both), before the 5700LE I had a GeForce 4 MX440.

I got an NVidia 6800 AGP and unlocked the extra shader and unlocked to 16x pipelines. Can't remember the program, but its still around on techpowerup I think?

Edit: I think its Rviva or similar?

I did that too, unlocked both no artifacts... Don't think the 7800 could unlock at all...

Edit: Riva Tuner.

Brings back memories, I used the Evercool EC-WC202 water cooler kit for the Athlon XP rig, still have the cooler but the water block is pooched and the pump dead as a door nail... Was sweet back in the day though

I'm only 63 , but feel much younger

I'm waiting till mid July to order so I can build it by My B-day on the 24th
no doubt a Ryzen 7 1800X
probably a ASUS Prime X370-Pro , but maybe a ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero
2x8 3200-3600 DDR4 Ram , Depending on benches
CORSAIR Hydro Series H110 or more likely custom water
I'll decide on a case and water parts early July and go from there.
First build since my phenom II X6 ... looking forward to it

What m-atx cabinet at max 37.5cm height is there?
Low noise is priority. Good quality.
For 1700x as 1800x is sold out and with a noctua 15 cooler. And no itx board in sight.
Should take single gpu card but full range.

What about fractal node 804? That can fit and i have 304 node now and like it?

It's a shame that the Ryzen 7 1700X/1800X doesn't come with the Wraith Max.

I am poor so I bought the Cooler Master Hyper T4 for $10.

Having been flip-flopping between 1700 and 1700x for weeks and still can't decide yet. I would like to get the free cooler from 1700. TDP of 65w is also nice, but I don't want t miss out the 1700x's performance. I don't want to shell out more for a big, clunky air cooler in my case. Also, the collateral damage caused to Mobos/CPU/Cards by AIO leakage are not covered by warranties in my country so I don't really want to take my chances either.

Decisions...Decisions...

That one is a tough choice. The 65W TDP is nice in terms of cooling requirements (although i wouldn't compare it to 65W Intel chips - AMD and Intel rather famously spec these things differently), but it also means low sustained performance. The Cinebench scores we've seen seem to have the 1700 running at a rather measly 3.1GHz. Now, don't get me wrong, 8 cores at 3.1GHz at 65W sustained would be nigh on miraculous. I just don't believe that's what the TDP means (especially given that AMD has shown off side-by-sides with the 95W 1800X and the 140W 6900K with just a few watts between them.

I would think the 1700X is a significantly better chip for day-to-day use due to higher base clocks, but there's really no way of knowing until reviews arrive.

I think i will buy the cheapest b350 and a 1700 non x. Run it from the stock cooler and beat you guys for oc ! Put strain on and use every component to the max.
I take it you have some good closed-back headphones or well-insulated earplugs? 'cause that sounds like a recipe for noise.

Concerning memory Gibbo from overclockers.co.uk shared some insight into what is possible at the moment. Basically he says from the boards they tested so far only the Crosshair was able to do 3000-3200 MHz:

A comment from Asus:

"
I’ve decided to provide some recommendations on DDR4 limitations concerning AM4 currently.

As it stands the AMD code has restricted RAM tuning options which means many RAM kits at launch will not be compatible. This is the same for our competitors also.
What we recommend is the following:
If fully populating a system with 4 DIMMs (2DPC), use memory up to a max of 2400MHz.
If using 1DPC (2 DIMMs) ensure they are installed in A2/B2 and use memory up to max of 3200MHz.

The indication I have received from HQ is that AMD has focused all their efforts on CPU performance so far and will release updated code in 1~2 months when we expect improved DDR4 compatibility and performance."

In short if filling all 4 DIMM's set your speed to 2400MHz and work up from there.
If using 2 DIMM's put them in the A2/B2 slots and a max of 3200MHz should be possible.

In our testing only the Crosshair board achieved 3000-3200MHz, the others were in the 2400-2666MHz range.

BIOS updates will come!

One thing to note is that populating only 2 of the 4 DIMM's, particularly A2/B2, seems to be the way to go until updates arrive.

That's interesting. Not really surprising - there's only so much that can be done at once for a hard launch of a brand-new platform - but good to know they expect improvements with future updates. Not that I was planning on exceeding 3000MHz or using more than 2 DIMMs anyhow, but more information is always better.

Those of you who have pre-ordered: given that there are no manuals, QVLs or detailed specs available for the motherboards that we know of, what has been your reasoning around RAM? I'm waiting on reviews, ITX boards and more info on Ryzen 5 before ordering anything, but I'm considering ordering a 2x8GB set of RAM to preempt price spikes and any shortages that might occur due to Ryzen-launch demand.

I'm leaning towards G.Skill TridentZ, either 3000 C15 or 3000 C14, but the price jump to 3200 C14 isn't too awful - it's just that it's out of stock. What would you choose? Based on what I've read about previous architectures I'm not too concerned about getting high-speed RAM, but I've read enough confusing stuff about Ryzen and RAM to have become very unsure.

lol, I would be shocked if that thing can even cool that CPU on a warm day at stock settings without throttling. Probably sound like a jet too.

I went with 3000 CL 15 a couple weeks ago. I figured AM4 would have support for at least that, and if not then the lower timings would be better than the 3200 CL 16.

Just ordered a non x 1700. It was the hardest thing to do mentally because the 1700x and 1800x is so darn cheap it doesnt matter for me personally. But hey someone needs to go the true enthusiast route. Arg it was tuff.

I will order the noctua d15 for sure but only because i am a noise sensitive dude and past 45. So for sure no cheating and no plugging this usual noctua stuff into the machine before i have set a worldrecord and shown you risk adverse cheaters it can be done.
Really i only needed a special pci soundcard and my itx build can not take it. So i have a good excuse to buy zen.

Found the cheapest b350 board. Unfortunately it was a asus. I would have preferred some less brand but hey you have to go for the price.

Now to the ram. Need some cheap <32mm ddr4 than can stay under the noctua (another reason to spare the cost but i have a noise and sound disease so its okey ).
