I'm keeping everything save for CPU, mobo and RAM, obviously.
- Learned my lesson with the i5, don't go with the mid range when you intend to keep the system for long. CPU is definitely an 8c Ryzen for longevity, 1700 or 1700x depends on what XFR is capable of if that's the only difference. I intend to overclock to reach the 1800x and beyond. Those extra cores and threads are going to be quite useful.
- RAM is going to be 2x8GB sticks of at least DDR4 3000 speed, CAS 15 or lower. Maybe add another 2x8GB down the road as I did with the 2x4 then 4x4GB sticks in my current rig.
- Motherboard is going to be a robust B350/X370 one with beefy VRM. Maybe mATX if available, I'd appreciate a smaller case sometime in the future
Next upgrade would probably be GPU to cut down on power consumption although I'm fine with the performance for my 1080p monitor. I mean I could go from 250-300w down to 150w or 100w by a mostly sidegrade to a RX480 or 1060 plus the added VRAM. I'll see what the Volta and Vega generations have to offer.
PSU is still going strong (well,
it is jonnyguru approved) especially supporting an OC'd 290 (I don't overvolt it, it's not worth it) after all these years since bought, but I think it's due for replacement some time soon, its components are old although it has supported a light 300-350w tops load for most of its useful life... no capacitor bulging yet. I try to keep it in top shape (cleaning it every three-six months, applying high temperature silicone to replace
original glue keeping parts fixed where it has come loose from vibrations, already changed fan once, etc)
