Would it make sense to buy a single 8 GB stick of DDR4 right now?

Then when prices come down, I'll but a second identical stick.
16GB of DDR4 3000 2*8GB can be found for around 110 dollar. That is a increase of around 20 dollar compared to before the spike in prices. Lower speed memory actually have suffered more from the price increase or the 16GB modules.

For example
2400/2133 16GB 2*8 before the price increase was around 50-60 dollar and now all the way up to 100-120$
3000 16GB 2*8 was as low as 90 and can still be found for around 110-130dollars.

So I would say best buy you can do now is 16GB DDR4 3000 , buying a single low speed dimm would not make you save a lot at the end.

Feel like it's been ages since my last build, almost 7 years. This is what I'm leaning on, still haven't decided if I should go with a Sapphire Nitro Radeon RX 480 8GB to hold me over until Vega release or stick with my 290x for now. Mainly gaming but do a bit of Adobe Premiere/AE work.

This is the RAM in my current build, a 6700K system. RAM was purchased on 6/10/2016. Granted, it was one of the less expensive DDR4-3000 sticks, but it's been working perfectly fine.

Combination of the RAM shortage and arrival of Ryzen makes me wish I had bought more...

I bought 2x8GB DDR4-3400 TridentZ modules for a little over $89 many months ago...

I should have bought at least two kits. Today's price is almost double.

Wow, looking back at my invoices I got 16GB DDR4 for $50. Granted it's only 2400MHz, but I run it at 2666 1T. I'll be interested to see how much it matters when reviews start coming out.

Swapping CPU and board is looking pretty tempting.

If the platinum DIMMs didn't look so darn perfect in my late-to-the-party Skylake box I'd just reuse them, but it looks like I'll have to get new ones.

I'm definitely stealing the RX 480 from that build.

I don't think that's true. Take a look at the price trend for Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000:
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/MYH48d/corsair-memory-cmk16gx4m2b3000c15?history_days=365

In June 2016, it was ~$70.

Five days ago, it was $125.

Now it's $110.

I'm curious to see if anybody was willing to pay sales tax to get the Ryzen model CPU you wanted.

For example, I want the 1800X & the only place that I can order from is either Amazon or Tiger Direct (which charges ST), as Newegg is sold out

Got mine from B and H Video. No sales tax to me.

Canceled my R7 1700 CPU order from Newegg (shipping out of CA, was hoping for NJ or TN warehouse) and made reservation to pick it up from Micro Center instead, since it will be ready for pickup at 1:00 PM on March 2nd itself, with $11.34 tax which is perfectly acceptable to me.

Also found the font I want for ASUS Crosshair VI Hero nameplate. Ordered a print of it in "onyx" using 3D Hubs (more competitive pricing but quality varies depending on who you go with). May print the coffin cable cover myself, though, since it requires less precision and I can probably use PLA or ABS for that without problem. I think I really need the motherboard on hand to double check placement of cabling and everything first, though.

You guys are tempting me. I just bought and setup 4 28 thread, 14 core (each system), E5-2683 systems, and I have plenty of slots to add video cards for my folding farm, BUT....

This is sounding so tempting, just to play with an 1800x......Dang AMD

Why not grab a 1700(x) and see how far she goes. In my mind that's one of the biggest questions about this release.

My problem is do you go with the Crosshair 6 Hero or the MSI Titanium for Overclocking a 1800X.

Picking mine up from microcenter. If you guys see that really anxious looking dude biting his nails while waiting in line on March 2nd, that would be me.
Friend in Virginia was saying his microcenter had people in line already to buy a Ryzen.
That is some dedication.

Well, I always play with the best, its go big or stay home for me !
Sounds like someone invested in NVDA/AMD

Typically I would say that the high end makes zero sense but honestly I was a bit attracted to 1800x as well. 100 bones to step up to the highest binned product they can make is certainly appealing.

There is a rumor that the 1700 and 1700x are from the same bin. The only difference is xfr.

I got to say I think it's possible.

I am not invested in anything financially. I just like to play with anything new, and that sounds promising. I am not spending a dine until the official reviews come out, but my gut tells me, we have a winner, and a new toy for daddy to play with.

Edit: I got to be the CPU moderator for exactly that reason. I OWNED almost every CPU out there, and could reply intelligently about what its like to own them. I was elected as a moderator by the forum users years ago.
