I just ordered five Adata SU800 128GB SATA SSDs. Time to go fix some Ramen for breakfast...

Damn that's some serious splurging for you. Enjoy the noodles.

This was already posted in another thread, but just in case you didn't see it.

I'm surprised the top-end MSI board is going for that much? Also when I first saw the Asus prices I thought ShopBLT was just gouging. Now I think that might actually be the prevailing price.

Too bad ShopBLT wants like $16 just to ship a board.

I am staying as far away as I can from MSI.

Back in the day, I bought the MSI X58 Platinum SLI and it is the buggiest motherboard I've ever used.

This is some interesting information.. Maybe hold off on those AIO coolers...

GamersNexus.net said:
That said, through independent validation, we’ve learned that three stock coolers will ship for Ryzen CPUs, each labeled S1, S2, and S3. We don’t have a ton of information on these just yet, but we know the basics: The S1 stock cooler will be outfitted for 65W TDP CPUs; the S2 cooler will support 95W CPUs and is equipped with some form of RGB LED lighting; the S3 cooler is rated for 125W, so that’d be your OC unit, and provides color adjustment through an AMD MCU. We also know that some board vendors will have their own applications that allow color adjustment to the SR2 coolers.

As a side note, from what we understand, the package height of the Ryzen CPUs will be taller than AM3+ chips, hence the updated mounting kits.

i have heard that this may be the case but then i wonder why the recommended PSU for 470's are 500-550W?

as far as blowers, i don't plan on overclocking at all so heat should not be an issue. i also understand that they tend to be much louder.

A reference 470 have a need for a 6 pin and dont consume over 130w at most. Its different from all the oc cards out there. The reference card also have high quality vrm that is efficient. A 380w ps is plenty for a r3 or r5 zen and a ref 470 even if its kind of low quality.

If you game and have small case a blower is far preferable. Oc or not. My ref 470 is far less noisy gaming than my prior msi 970 in a node 304 cabinet. A blower is a nice and best solution for most consumers. The heat needs to go out the cabinet and a blower is a fantastic solution for it especially in a 130w tdp envelope where noise can be controlled.

Since memory is --------------------------------> EXPENSIVE

Should I buy a single 8 GB stick of DDR4 and wait until prices come down?

Going to build one. Probably not day 1 unless newegg has great stock and decent pricing. Must be newegg because they accept bitcoin as payment.

If day 1 pricing isn't tempting enough, I'll probably wait until the Microcenter bundle deals start up.

Just bought 16GB of DDR3 and a 1060 6gb, so its going to be a while until I upgrade my cpu. Hopefully later in the summer and hopefully by that time ram prices do start falling again.

I don't think memory prices are going down any time soon. Having only 8GB of RAM could become a limiting factor in games and some applications because you have to take into account that OS will take at least 25-30% of that for itself so you are left with a lot less available memory. If I were you I'd buy 16GB right now, just bite the bullet.

Well, this is what another user said:

"You may have seen current RAM prices going up along with SSD prices as well. I have talked to SuperTalent manufacturer rep and he told me that they use Samsung chips mostly and these are in very short supply, Sammy overextended obligations on memory supplies and can't or does not want to keep up with demand. Too many chips are going to too many devices and desktop RAM as well as what's used in SSD is not a top priority and so Sammy bumps prices up weekly, other follow the trend. He told me that they (internally) expect prices to keep rising till around March. Already I see prices on 16GB sets up from $50 summer to $75 minimum now and $90 average on the market. Expect $100 and up in March."

We are already well past that and it's not even March yet.

Considering Samsung's current state, it seems like they're on a mission to annoy the hell out of us all. Well, all the ones they don't set on fire.

I believe I already saw benchmarks showing 16gb being a gain of fps.

The problem with RAM is that we don't know what kind of RAM Ryzen will support and if there's any gain going for fast RAM. OK we have seen mobos claiming 3200+OC support, but will it matter?

Personally I am thinking going for 1700X+Asrock 370 Pro gaming+16GB DDR4.

I intend to do some 2500k vs 1700X comparison with my 1070, like I did with the 970 and my older cpus. The 2500k still manages quite well, but I do expect some significant gains here and there in cpu limited games. May even throw in some i7-860 tests too.

I am worried that Noctua will be the one that will delay my project the most. I need proof of purchase of AM4 mobo for them to ship the bracket for my D14. I will buy it of course if I find it online beforehand.

Otherwise, if I have all the parts except the bracket, it will be like having Irina Shayk on my bed and she's on her period.

Well if the rumours are true the X chips will come with AMD watercoolers, so you'll still get to third base.

Ugh I'm already dreaming about Ryzen... I had a dream last night that I opened my 1800x parcel and in the plastic window I read on the CPU Heatspreader... YD140BBBM4GAE... A 1400x? NOOOOOOO!!!! THEY SENT THE WRONG SKU!!!

I really really hope amd doesn't force us to buy stock coolers.

Really?

I want one.. I'll probably never use it.. But hey, I might be able to look back one day, pick up an old cooler and think...

"this was a turning point in computing history"

And it really could be, because from here it could go in many directions, and a lot of them aren't good. But some...some breathe hope.

I just feel like the air cooler will be subpar, and I don't like aio's.

As either my CPU or my motherboard kicked the bucket this saturday, I'm definitely going Ryzen as soon as possible (given that performance at least somewhat lives up to the hype).

What I'm bringing with me:
  • Asus Radeon Fury X
  • EVGA Supernova G2 750W
  • Samsung 840 Pro 256GB (OS)
  • Samsung 850 Evo 500GB (Games)
  • (possibly: WD 1TB somethingorother HDD)
What I'm getting:
  • Most likely a 1600X. We'll see. Definitely not an 8-core, but I'll need some convincing to go 4-core. X because I'm thinking the 65W TDP of lower models mean either thermal limits or worse binning.
  • Motherboard? No idea at all. Want a mini-ITX board, but if those take forever to show up I might go mATX. Depending on what the trade-offs are, I'm more than willing to go B350.
  • RAM: 16GB of something around 2800-3000GT/s with low-ish (CL~15) timings. Not wasting money on more.
  • And a case. If mITX boards show up in time, a Phanteks Enthoo Evolv ITX. For mATX, I have no idea - the Enthoo Evolv mATX is too big for my tastes.
What's in the works:
  • Custom water cooling loop for both GPU and CPU. I'm tired of the whining of my GPU pump, and I got an amazing deal on an EK block for the GPU. I have a 120mm rad lying around from way back when, and bought an EK-XRES 100 SPC-60 MX PWM pump+res combo. Just need a CPU block (with AM4 mounting, obviously) and an additional 240 rad, and it's off to the races. Oh, and I'm getting 1850rpm Gentle Typhoons for both rads. Because why not.
  • Custom PSU cabling. I don't care about fancy sleeving or anything like that, but I need to cut down on clutter. Might just shorten the stock cables.

Some time after that (closer to summer, probably), I'm finally building my girlfriend the video editing rig she's wanted for quite a while (luckily she hasn't needed it for work, and now we can actually afford it). That'll most likely have a 1700 or 1700X, 32GB of RAM, a 960 Evo, Supernova G3 550W and some mATX board inside a Bitfenix Prodigy M. And a hand-me-down GTX 970 from my brother. Unsure about the CPU cooler for this - the case (with the drive mounting rail) limits cooler height, and I'm reasonably sure an AIO for the CPU would interfere with the drive rail too. I'm interested in seeing how the Wraith 2.0 or whatever it's named turns out - it might be near ideal for this build.

Anyone worried about the number of USB ports on their mobo. For the first time ever i am counting USB ports.

VR headsets are bound to get cheaper this year and if we end up with headset, maybe external sensors (hopefully not), controller 1 or more, it all adds up.
As it is with mouse, keyboard, maybe headphones, maybe printers, external optical drives, mobile devices and so on....
The chipset does provide plenty but not all mobos have that many USB on the back IO and some cases provide only 2 USB ports on the front panel.
Even some X370 might not have enough for some users and gets worse with B350.
So yeah, for the first time ever, i am counting USB ports lol.

And a thought on 6 vs 8 cores.
Since AMD works with game devs, we might start to see system req for "ultra settings" requiring 8 cores over the next 1-2 years. Might be worth considering such a trajectory when deciding on what to buy.
