The Noctua will be the best value for money, but a decent 240/280/360mm AIO should beat it in temps.

For noise, the Noctua should be quieter than most if not all AIO's, however some of them get awfully close noise values at better temps. I'm going water cooling just because I want the most out of my XFR and my NZXT H440 case has some pretty good noise cancelling features.

Water aio's are highly overrated imo. That noctua will basically last forever, has comparable performance to a 240mm aio, and it's cheaper.

I got my eye on the cryorig h. Top tier performance for $30, when they are on sale. Also, noctua and cryorig offer free am4 plates.

The best value looks to be the 6 core/12 thread model. It can offer Core i7-6800k/5820k performance at a much lower price. For the price of a 6800k you could get a 6 core/12 thread Ryzen processor plus motherboard plus entry level water cooler like a Corsair H60. Of course the Intel processors and motherboards do have extra features like extra PCI/PCI-E lanes, Integrated Graphics and thunderbolt, but of course not everyone needs those features. Finally I think Ryzen will not only deliver on performance gains but it will also be very popular. Ryzen based computers will be like Pentium 4 based computers, there will be tons of them that are sold used in several years and several of them in people's garages.

You can get more than that.

6800k+mb=$600

$250 Ryzen 6core + $130mb +$35 Cryorig H7 + $100 16gb 3200 DDR4 + $85 for great case.

Basically nearly a whole system...And you probably don't really even need the aftermarket cooler! The stock cooler will do fine for decent ocs!

Forgot to add that Intel has Quad Channel memory, but again not everyone necessarily needs that feature. I am sure that the motherboards for AMD Naples will have a lot of those features.

I need to know more about the motherboards and want to see some people get gpu passthrough working (I think it will but its always a dance with the hardware selection) before I jump ship. And that's assuming I'm not broke. 6 core at least I'd say.

I am sure they will sell those with 16c 1100 usd cpu and position it against the hedt line with some sort of appropriate name - perhaps R9 . If you are looking for that sort of performance.

So now I'm curious: If I want a cooler that's low maintenance (hence no custom loops) and top performance (cools well but also quiet), what would you all recommend? Assume price is not an issue. In other words, I don't want "the best bang for the buck," I want "the best I can get for my bucks."

It really depends. Air coolers can have problems with some memory sizes, where as most* AIO do not. AIOs will also not put as much weight on the motherboard as large air coolers. Generally though, a good air cooler is going to be very quiet if you get the right one for your chip. AIOs have gotten pretty cheap recently though.

A large expensive AIO will beat the best air coolers. The thing is that it cost a lot more and the small difference in additional cooling potential won't actually net you much in the form of clockspeed. You will likely end up with the same clockspeed, but at a few degrees C less, which doesn't do anything.

Air coolers are rock solid too. They basically cannot fail! AIOs can leak and the pump can die without notice. The worst thing that can happen to a large air cooler is the fan starts making noiß, and has to be replaced, which will happen to the aio too.

$/perf air wins by a mile, especially if you consider the long term!

The only real advantages with aios is max cooling potential on the higher end models, and aesthetics, which is subjective.

I want mini-iTX, I want mini-iTX, I want mini-iTX, I want mini-iTX, I want mini-iTX, I want mini-iTX

In 2017 mini-iTX format should have been the first format every motherboard manufacturer should have created first, full-ATX is so 1990s. Come on guys, we can OC on mini-iTX as well, release mini-iTX motherboards for AM4, release mini-iTX motherboards for AM4, release mini-iTX motherboards for AM4.

Ehh.. I will always be a fan of full size atx mbs. A lot of redundancy keeps them alive longer. I have seen countless slots die on mbs over the years. On tiny boards, your usually screwed when this happens, but with atx boards, you simple move your components and keep going.

Me too, but I'm worried how much the vendors will cut costs by giving a lower feature set compared to Z170 Intel ITX boards. Also, as of now, only Biostar has announced a X370 ITX board. We also don't know much about the X300 chipset.

A X300 mini-iTX board in theory should have more features than the one with X370. Also with the X300 you can make a board that has the same features as X370 but at lower cost due to x300 being cheaper and needs less copper for the heat-sink. Unless AMD hasnt released the X300 Chipset yet, i really dont see why manufacturers will not have boards ready with it on RYZEN launch. X300 its the only one im really looking forward to own.

How is biostar nowaday!? Back when I worked in a computer shop as a kid, the owner used mostly biostar boards, and they were really cheap junk. But that was like 15 years ago.

What are the best motherboard manufacturers nowadays?

I heard ASUS have great boards, but their customer service is legendarily bad. I also heard that Asrock's quality slipped after they split off from asus.

Asus Gigabyte and MSI are usually the ones I hear about the most.

I hear Biostar are OK - not the best for overclocking, but decent enough. AsRock split from ASUS years ago, and they generally make boards that have a very nice feature set at attractive prices. Generally good quality as well. ASUS is still the best choice for extreme OC/most features - and has the best UEFI in my opinion. Owned a Gigabyte board that failed, don't know much about MSI.

My 6600K is still serving me well, I'm waiting for Zen+ before I consider an upgrade.

If I WAS looking for a system right now, I would go for Ryzen 5 1600X. 6 cores/12 threads should last for a damn long time, and the price for it is just too good to say no.

Good to know. What are some top air coolers and top AIO models you guys would recommend I check out?

Air:
For non-OC situations: Cryorig H5 Ultimate and Universal, Be Quiet! Dark Rock 3.
For OC Situations: Cryorig R1 Ultumate and Universal, Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3.
AIO: Be Quiet! Silent Loop is the best of AIO coolers.

I loved my Biostar AM3 870 board. I had a Phenom II 960T overclocked to 4GHz in it, and it ran amazing well without a hiccup. I'm almost positive the board had a 4+1 phase design with no VRM heatsinks too I later retired it to my Plex Server with a X6 1035T and it ran 24/7 for around 2 years. I would've kept it, but I ended up selling it off along with the CPU. I'm trying to replace my current i5 3470s with a 6/12 Ryzen 65w chip; hopefully in an ITX FF. I'll probably grab a Biostar board as well.

is there any news about when/if there is a mobo coming out with more than 16 lanes for gpus?

something like my z97-ws that has a plx chip?

or maybe i will build a sick itx rig... decisions decisions.

Fingers crossed more AM4 compatible heat sinks are available at launch. Only one on new egg right now is a single new MSI model. Most companies supplying kits will want a Zen Proof of Purchase apparently so 1-2 week wait after buying CPU. I suppose preorders might be accepted?

400% totally this. Especially now that AMD is coming out with Ryzen. When was the last time you could build an AMD ITX system using one of their top-end processors (non-APU) + higher-end mobo (answer: Never). Now is the time for AMD to push into building into smaller, but powerful systems (Sandybridge ITX in 2011 anyone?? 2011!!)
